So, there was this narcisstic chick who would listen to this tape of a band she liked over and over again in her car on the way to work cause they say her name. (Is self-knowledge narcissism? Gonna smell these flowers until I figure this out. But that's a tangent.) On this tape, besides the sacred reference to that prodigious indivdual (who, for various legal reason that cannot be disclosed must remain nameless but can be referred to as Jssc)is a recommendation to see a band, cause they are "about ready to explode". (Schaefer,_Freight_, 11/5/00) Which got Jssc to wondering ... on the list people have (usually apologetically) made reccomedations on new or not so new but rather unknown bands that we might like. Now this carefully disguised indivdual has cottoned onto the fabulous and unparrelled good taste of the edheaders. (for, one should think, obvious reasons. They like EFO, right?) and wants to know what hidden treasures of the edheaders are lurking in the CD/MP3/tape decks of the listers. So, the point. There is a point. What is a band/artists/jd, that you think should get way more attention then they are and/or want to share? For expediacy, the nebuluous writer of this missive is going to state that Fruvous, Neilds, Vance Gilbert, any Flemtam people are assumed to be part of the collective edhead conscious and need not be mentioned. My vote? You gotta check out Russell Wolff, Kevin So, Diedre Flint and Jess Klien. These dudes rock serious pumpkin butt. A few off the top of my head: Erin McKeown Bela Fleck Kris Delmhorst Jim's Big Ego / Jim Infantino Jiggle The Handle David Wilcox Dar Williams And just for control purposes, my CD collection also contains some Metallica, Primus, Phish, and Public Enemy. If anyone is going to the Me and Thee tonight and tomorrow you find yourself with a cold, you're welcome. I'll be the guy sneezing during the quiet numbers. Better start mainlining the Zinc. What is a > band/artists/jd, that you think should get way more > attention then they are and/or want to share? For Jason Harrod and Sarah Harmer. Sarah is well on her way to getting more attention with a very successful opening gig with the Barenaked Ladies and a recent appearance on Letterman. Jason's career could use a major jump start. He recently appeared at Club Passim in Harvard Square. I don't know if the show was officially sold out or not but people were packed in there. It was the first time I'd ever seen Jason live and I was very impressed. I wish I had been around Boston during his Harrod & Funck days. Anyway, those are my two submissions. - - rox ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2001 14:06:53 -0400 From: "steve roane" Subject: Re: You can't prove nothing. I strongly second the vote for Sarah Harmer. Her cd hasn't left my player since I bought it a couple of months ago. She is definitely worth checking out; haven't seen her perform live yet, but she is at the top of my 'have-to-see' list. Just a couple of suggestions--well, four--four bands with fabulous artistic merit but that most Americans have never heard of: From Australia: David Bridie (formerly of Not Drowning, Waving and My Friend the Chocolate Cake)--his album "Act of Free Choice" that came out in Australia last year is one of the most amazing discs I've ever heard--ambient x folk x techno. I think it's slated for North American release through Nettwerk early next year. Sort of like darker David Gray with more (WAY more) atmospherics. Paul Kelly--he's been around just about forever, and is big in Oz but not so much in the US. Very prolific folkster, styles stretch from ambient to bluegrass and everything in between, but primarily urban folk, depending on which album he's on and who he's collaborating with. From Europe: Turin Brakes--their recent album "The Optimist LP" (on Astralwerks) is fabulous, folky brit-pop-esque stuff but without the sort of whiny sameness (albeit *good* sameness) that pervades the likes of Travis and Coldplay. Think Travis x Gomez. Kings of Convenience--from Norway I think? They're also on Astralwerks I believe. Very mellow deep-toned stuff, all acoustic. He's a singer-songwriter from Asheville, NC (yay!). He released his first CD at the beginning of this year, and it's excellent. But since you're, like, the third or fourth person to point me towards them, can you give an album recommendation? As for me, I'll recommend: * Fruit. From Australia! They're amazing performers--sort of a world/pop kinda sound, only with a better beat and more interesting lyrics. * Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer. Very countrified, but Dave's songwriting is so good I'm willing to forgive him his twang.
