So I figured now that many people had listed their favorite EFO songs on this listserv, that perhaps once all the lists were counted up, some consensus of the best EFO songs would shine through. Or perhaps not. The folks on this listserv have thus far selected 56 (!) different EFO songs as their favorites, perhaps a sign of EFO's greatness in that they appeal to many different people in many different ways. Here are the songs that have appeared on multiple lists and how many times they were selected: TWO: Moons of Jupiter Hey Little Man Hail Mary Shy of Redemption Candido & America Stupid American The Bridge This My Town Farmer Brown Bleecker to Broadway Sahara THREE: Imagine Me Operator From Dacca Woman of Faith Gravity Train Song Twenty Thousand Hearts Jerusalem Number Six Driver Quick FOUR: Full of Herself FIVE: Oh My Brother SIX: Eddie's Concubine SEVEN: Old Dominion - -Liam _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2001 12:53:39 -0400 From: "Jim Merullo" Subject: Re: EFO Favorite Songs Consensus? - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Liam Sullivan" > SEVEN: > Old Dominion Although I like this song, as a New Englander, I am required by law to consider it fiction. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2001 20:33:25 EDT From: ImSerius2@aol.com Subject: The Ark 9/29/01 EFO The Ark Ann Arbor MI 09/30/01 What a great coupla shows! The early show was particularly special for me, because my 9-year-old son had his first Ark experienceb&and sitting with my arm around him during 'Hey Little Man' (I cried buckets) was a rushb&.but even more so was his face - wide-eyed, mouth gaping open - when Eddie launched into his awesome drum solo. Early Show Old Dominion Omar's Got a Problem Quick - (Julie got a lot of laughs on 'wanna have girth, wanna have mass) Mike thanked Ann Arbor for making him feel so welcome - 'All those 'M' flags every where' (home football Saturday for UofM) Jerusalem Hey Little Man (Mike said that Liam is 'half Hummel') (What did the bass player get on his SATs? Salivab&b&Michael joked about having to follow such a song with one of his own, and stalled for time, hoping that the audience would forget how amazing it was!! ) Three Fine Daughters of Farmer Brown Then, an aside about how they're travelling in a real live tour bus vs. Harvey the RVb&and how curious folks were coming up to them all the time to see whose bus it was, and giving completely blank looks when told 'Eddie From Ohio'. So they enlisted the aid of the audience to help them publicize a fictitious singer named Tennessee Waters, and they would tell people that that's whose bus it wasb&get his songs requested on the country stations, generate some hype for him not unlike Garth Brooks' Chris Gaines characterb&too funny. Number Six Driver Oh My Brother - with a heartfelt intro by Mike about the NYC show at the Knitting Factory; and while there was not silence after this number, there was an incredibly long session of heartfelt applause. And Julie teared up in the middle of the song. Bob Dylan's 'Don't Think Twice It's Alright' (another Mike-ism - 'in Ohio, we go by Eddie from Michigan, and nobody comes!) Let's Get Mesolithic (note: I'm not exactly sure this is when they did this song, but I do know they did it!!) Amazing drum solo by Eddie Candido and America - with the singalong part intro'd as, simply, 'o'b&.('in Virginia, it's best to stick to vowelsb&our commonwealth is a big vowel movement') Eddie's Concubine (with Robbie and Mike doing their best to crack Julie up, as usualb&got a lot of laughs on 'can't see his toes past his belly' and 'rid myself of this waistline') Mike dubbed himself a 'Folk Prankster' after all his hijinks during Eddie's Concubine. Lastly - 2 verses of 'America the Beautiful' - amazing. And, for an encore, the equally amazing 'Down to a River to Pray', which Mike claimed to have co-written with 'Traditional'. The Late Show: .Old Dominion Omar's Got a Problem Mike: welcome to the Ark - the club so nice, we played it twice! Quick Jerusalem Hey Little Man - 'if she has a girl, she'll have to write a new song!"b&Julie launched into 'Hey Little Girl"b&Somebody (Mike or Robbie) said 'Elton John did it with 'Candle in the Wind'' Mike joked about having to follow that song with one of his own again. Three Fine Daughters of Farmer Brown - with the front row including yours truly doing one version of The Joe, while the northern MI contingent off to the side did their version. Ours was dubbed the Southern Version, since it was instigated by my friend Anna, who drove all the way from Atlanta, GA for these shows!! Monotony 1000 Sarahs Oh My Brother Don't Think Twice It's Alright Drum solo - Eddie - he played a bit, stopped to great applause, said 'you guys are awesome', and then GRINNED like mad, and said 'but hold on, I'm just getting started!!!' and proceeded to just blow us outta the water - standing-o at the end. Then Mike introduced the 'second movement in his vocal trilogy' and they launched into 'Tommy the Canexican'. And when they got to the end ("Canada's dollar is dropping real low..."), Mike started into some sort of instrumental trumpet-like solo, just cracking Robbie and Julie up - and he did it 3 or 4 times before they could actually stop laughing long enough to continue the song. 'Some songs don't make it to the third trimester, so this might be the last performance of this for quite a while' - Eddie's Concubine, with Robbie and Mike even more out of control than during the first show. Interestingly, during the first show, when she sang 'think I'll just point and watch the piggy run', she aimed her imaginary finger guns one each at Robbie and Mikeb&then during the second show, after having been harrassed so much by those two, she pointed both hands at her own head!! They joked that while Julie was on maternity leave, they were gonna replace her with Ellis Paul, and Eddie suggested that they call themselves 'Manhole'. They closed with America the Beautiful, and encored with 'Down to a River to Pray'. It was a great, great night. Got to chat after, and finally get get my Mesolithic t-shirt, and had a nice talk with Robbie about TCBoyle and 'Tortilla Curtain' and 'Candido and America'. Paul Brown, it was nice to meet you!!! My parents, who always make it a point to catch the band when they are in town, thought it was the best EFO show they'd ever seen. Thanks to the tour bus, they were all well rested and ready to go. They played a great set of new songs and old favorites. "Best of Me," "Hey Little Man," and "Number Six Driver" stood out among the new songs. Among the not so new songs, "Eddie's Concubine" was particularly good. It was particularly nice to hear them play Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright." As always, I'm looking forward to the next show. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2001 23:09:12 EDT From: ImSerius2@aol.com Subject: P.S. - Ark Show forgot to mention...Mike said he'd talked to someone at a costume shop who told him that the most popular Halloween costumes this year among kids were firemen and policemen. st ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V4 #230 *****************************
