(cool station and i'm not saying that just because i work there). ok i think that's it. it was something good during an otherwise dark and stressful week. take care. katie (another northern californian edhead) http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~stohlman ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2001 01:43:57 EDT From: Shellyus@aol.com Subject: Re: I find this really neat. I did not see a building; I saw people. Thousands of lives lost, thousands more whose lives were forever changed in one horrifying moment. I spoke to my father that day. He was struggling to comprehend the horror of the situation. When he first saw the plane crash into the World Trade Center, he was convinced that he was watching a preview for the latest action movie. It was unreal. But sadly, it is all too real. As I watch America begin to pick up the pieces and recover from this evil act that occurred on September 11th, I am comforted. I can't help but notice that despite the evil that surrounds us, that is symbolized by the tons of twisted metal and debris that are still giving off steam almost a week after the attack, that there is a lot of good in and around us. The thousands of people who lined up to donate blood without being prompted; the millions of dollars raised in central New York in just a few short days; the bags and bags of supplies that have been donated to aid in the rescue effort; the tireless and heroic efforts of the rescue workers, many of which have lost their lives; the numerous vigils that have taken place, gathering people of all different races and religions; the displays of American pride; and messages of support from people all over the world. These things bring me great comfort in this time of great sorrow. If there could be one lesson to be learned from this great human tragedy, I hope it is that we need to love one another. We need to put aside our petty differences and celebrate the humanity in us all; black, white, arab, or whatever. They say that it is only through suffering that we learn compassion. Then may our suffering, our pain, and our anger serve to strengthen our love and appreciation for one another. Let us not join in the evil that has allowed these events to unfold by turning to hate. Let us not look back in anger or forward in fear. Let us instead look around in awareness and fight evil and hatred with the only thing capable of conquering it: LOVE. Love each other. Hug each other. Tell people you love them. For too many, that is no longer a luxury. Peace. She put on a fantastic show and it was exactly what everyone needed. There was a EFO connection made when Ellis Paul, who opened for Lucy, sang a song about Chris McCandless. He said he had recently read Into the Wild. It made me think of Robbie who of course wrote Sahara. I might mention it to Robbie if I get a chance at the Warner Theater show next month. If you're talking about tolerance and respect for diversity, you're preaching to the choir, because there isn't a nation on this Earth better at those things than ours. And no other nation works harder at promoting peace between nations in conflict. But the time for diplomacy or peaceful measures on this issue is at an end. People need to realize that those who inflicted this atrocity against our country are not remotely like us insofar as their core beliefs, and no amount of hugging or love or pacification is going to change that. We tried that with Hitler in 1938 and 1939 - look what happened. There is a time for every purpose under heaven, so the Bible says, and now is the time for retribution, although certainly that retribution needs to be limited to those responsible. It has been said that it is self-defense to kill those who are clearly intent on killing you, and the current situation certainly seems to fit that description. It was not our country that initiated this war, and just as after Pearl Harbor in 1941 we have the right to aggression to prevent such things from reoccurring. As my aunt-in-law says, it's not okay to fight, but it's not okay to get beat up, either. That said, let us all pray that our retribution will be swift and effective, and that we will be able to help return peace to the world as soon as possible.
