A silent member speaking up here-- Boston is eerie in light of this tragedy. I work at the Museum of Science, which sits on the Charles River that divides Boston from Cambridge. We see the skyline from there, and all I kept thinking in terror was "Oh my gosh, this is going to happen in my back yard". Every noise, every rumble, every siren makes me jump. We had a thunderstorm last night-- a cruel twist of fate right now. Those people in NYC and DC, they need us right now. Put aside thoughts of war and hatred and remember they are our brothers, sisters and neighbors. If you have money to spare, please give. If you are in the Northeast, I know there are a lot of Salvation Army and United Way centers collecting goods like bottled water (new and sealed), gatorade, clean shirts and jeans, new underwear and socks, canned meats and tuna, steel reinforced boots, face masks, saline wash, booties for the search dogs paws, medical supplies, flashlights and batteries... Anything you can give. http://www.boston.com has a listing of where people in the Boston area can help, and for RI residents and SE Massachusetts and CT people, check out www.92profm.com for drop off points-- they are filling tractor trailers today and tomorrow. Take care of yourselves, everyone. How heartening is that?! Money is always welcome, and more supplies and blood will be needed in the coming weeks to cope with this tragedy. - --- Nicole Ryan - --- galebird@earthlink.net - --- "You may only be one person in the world, but you are the world to one person" ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Sep 2001 18:52:50 -0400 From: Mark Lindeman Subject: Re: Addendum Nicole and all, It's a little hard to believe that just 11 days ago I kicked off that Tom Burleigh thread.... On Tuesday morning, the ashes were flurrying in our neighborhood (about 2 1/2 miles from the WTC). People found papers from the towers in our neighborhood and well beyond. My brother-in-law is a FDNY firefighter; he was nowhere near the WTC on Tuesday, but his former stationmates from lower Manhattan are almost all presumed dead. He does not feel lucky. Down the street, a family has posted a sign with a large photograph: "We need your help. Giovanna (Ginny) Gambale, last seen on the 102nd floor of Tower 1...." The sign is surrounded with flowers and candles. I doubt we in NYC have ever felt so connected to each other, to the rest of the United States, to the world. (I just read about a wall across from the embassy in Oslo, Norway, with thousands of notes, pictures, wreathes, signs... including one that reads: "The Atlantic is a creek, our sympathy is an ocean, America is the world.") That first day, I heard someone on the street yelling that we should just blow up all the Arabs, and I feared for our neighbors -- many of whom are Arab-Americans, mostly from Yemen and Lebanon. I've heard of a few cases of physical assaults, one threat against a storefront mosque. Mostly we're reaching out to each other, trying to take care of each other. We've all seen too much pain already. We're praying for the lost and grieving here and elsewhere; praying also that what lies ahead may be better, not much worse. Thanks for being with us. While I sympathize with these thoughts, I believe that they are a side issue. What needs to start happening is that we need to fear for ourselves, and we must resolve to do something about it. Our very way of life is under attack. It will be under attack for decades to come. The focus needs to be on how we are going to defend our country and our way of life. If this does not become our focus, we may well lose it. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Sep 2001 09:41:26 +0800 From: "AJ Putnam" Subject: Re: Addendum (WTC) - -----Original Message----- From: "Ron Rosen" Date: Sat, 15 Sep 2001 18:12:21 -0700 > > That first day, I heard someone on the street yelling that we should just > > blow up all the Arabs, and I feared for our neighbors -- many of whom are > > Arab-Americans, mostly from Yemen and Lebanon. > > While I sympathize with these thoughts, I believe that they are a side issue. "The world changed on Tuesday, in more ways than we can probably understand or grasp at this point. But amidst the pain and the anguish and the desire for revenge, there are things that we have to keep in mind. In a battle between good and evil, good must pick its methods very carefully, lest it end up being indistinguishable from that which it is fighting. Blind reprisal is a blind alley; we must make certain of our targets. Make no mistake, this is war. But the difference between ourselves and those we are at war with, is the fact that we DO make distinctions between the innocent and the guilty. In all wars, innocents will suffer, "collateral damage"; to use the Pentagon's phrase. We can't always prevent it, but we must try to do so. We must set aside the desire for blind vengeance in favor of justice; rough justice, yes; war is rough justice exemplified. I know it is not that simple, but the wrath of angry citizens who are lashing out at all Arabs and Muslims is NOT what this should be about. Osama Bin Laden is no more a representative of true Islam than David Koresh was a representative of Christianity. We must not bow to terror, but we must not bow to bigotry or prejudice, either. We must not destroy our own liberty in trying to save it. We are not fighting Islam or Arabs; we are fighting barbarity. I am by nature a diplomat. People who know me say that I turn the other cheek a bit too often. But I am not a pacifist either. I believe that there are times, when confronted by absolute evil, that you must fight. And I believe that this is one of those times. But let us fight with a clear vision of who the enemy is. The enemy is not the Arab-American; he is not the Afghani on the street or the Muslim in the mosque. We must fight, but our terrible swift sword must only be drawn when the time is right and our sight is clear. We must vent our vengeance on those who deserve it, they and no one else. That and the preservation of our liberty will be the manner and method of our victory." -- John Sickels ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Sep 2001 18:51:57 -0700 From: "Ron Rosen" Subject: Re: Addendum (WTC) > ron, i couldnt disagree with you more. some of those people are "ourselves", fellow americans. america is theiir way of life as well. if we start targetting people who are our neighbors because they happen to share the same general heritage of those who attacked NY and DC, then we are no better than any other zealot. I'm not advocating beating up Moslems. Nothing of the sort. You don't know me. My father marched in Selma, Alabama in 1965 and almost go himself killed. When I was 15 I got to meet two heroes: James Baldwin and Martin Luther King. I have my credentials and I've paid my dues. My post was changing the subject. What I'm saying is that you need to understand that what happened on Tuesday is an attack on your way of life. Not by Moslem-Americans, but by fundamentalist Moslem fanatics. You need to understand that the major focus of your energy in the years to come will be how to preserve your culture and your country. Because the country you love, the country that accepts people of all cultures, the country that lets you worry about whether you will get a decent seat at the next EFO show, is going to be a very different place unless we resolve to figure out how to locate, wipe out, and continually fight the very real war that was dropped on our doorstep on Tuesday. > ron, i couldnt disagree with you more. some of those people are "ourselves", fellow americans. america is theiir way of life as well. if we start targetting people who are our neighbors because they happen to share the same general heritage of those who attacked NY and DC, then we are no better than any other zealot. we do need to exercise caution, and reason, and some patience. i believe action will be taken, more lives will be lost, both american and arab, but that should not extend to peaceful neighbors who are americans themselves. xenophobia helps no one, and attacking people solely for being arab and/or muslim is part of that. parting of uniting as americans and defending our way of life, as you put it, means including *all* americans. > > > > amy p. > > -- > > _______________________________________________ > Get your free email from http://webmail.earthlink.net ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V4 #198 *****************************
