Oh wait...CRAP!!! On another note: Is anyone else coming to the Blacksburg show Thursday night? It's part of the VT pep rally (who books EFO for a pep rally?), so it won't be the longest set in the world, but it'll be free and they'll be giving away stuff too! Look for me and my old school Cannon AE-1. ===== steven nero7997@yahoo.com http://filebox.vt.edu/users/stblack2/ http://verticalhorizonfaq.tripod.com/ Get email alerts & NEW webcam video instant messaging with Yahoo! ("Tom Burleigh's dead, curiosity killed him...") I've only heard this song on the album, so I figured a crowd of Edheads might be able to fill in some background for me. My eight-year-old daughter asked me, Is that a true story? I thought that was a good question, so I spent at least a few minutes trying to figure it out. I've found several accounts of the death of Thomas Boerley in Harpers Ferry. One has him bravely taking on Brown's rebels (this one doesn't make much sense); one has him walking down the street minding his own business (this one is pretty questionable, too); one or two don't seem to say what he was doing. So far I haven't found one that 'matches' the EFO version. So I'm curious: is EFO's version based on an alternative tradition that I haven't stumbled across online yet, or is it their own folk-process improvisation? Can anyone tell me more of the story behind the song? When I saw EFO at the New Bedford Summerfesxt, the band said it was written about Julie's Great-Great-Grandfather who was the first non-slave killed in some battle (I seem to recall it being a slave revolt) in Harper's Ferry. I could have my facts wrong, but I know they said it was Julie's relative. Jim and Ron, thanks for the quick responses (I swear no pun intended) on EFO's intros at New Bedford and FRFF. (I was actually at FRFF, with my two young daughters; I would've loved to hear EFO there, but I figured we never would have made it off the hill at 12:30 in the morning!) My daughter will be pretty darn interested in the possibility that Tom Boerley/Burleigh was Julie's great-great-grandfather. FWIW -- my few sentences of potted history, subject to correction by those who know better -- John Brown was an abolitionist and Underground Railroad participant who eventually decided to form a small armed force and attempt to spark a slave revolt. Brown and fewer than 20 men raided Harpers Ferry, WV in October 1859, killed a few locals, took a few prisoners, temporarily freed a few slaves, failed to ignite a revolt, and were soon routed by some 100 marines. Brown was executed, and was regarded by many in the North as a martyr for the abolitionist cause: >He captured Harper's Ferry with his nineteen men so true >He frightened old Virginia till she trembled > through and through >They hung him for a traitor, themselves the traitor crew >His soul is marching on (By the way, as far as I can tell, the town was "Harper's Ferry" then and is "Harpers Ferry" now.) Anyone seen > the 'Mesolithic' shirt at a show yet? (Anxiously counting down > until they return to NC) I saw the 'Mesolithic' shirt at the Readington, NJ show in July. It's the same as the 'Quick' shirt (same colours and all), but says 'Let's Get Mesolithic' on the front. I don't have it here, but there's pictures of the shirts in the current issue of the 'Ohioan.' The event is officially referred to as "John Brown's Raid." If memory serves me, the raid specifically targeted an armory, where they hoped to gain guns, powder, and ammunition. Yes, Harpers Ferry is still in existence. Jack Jack L.
