Just proves that EFO power -does- work!!!! Of -COURSE-, the rain started RIGHT after I left work in Philly!!! Rain - -seriously- came down in SHEETS during my journey to Towson to meet Carey at work. and people forget how to drive in rain like that. Silly Delawareans and Mary-landers!!! I was worried a few times that I wasn't gonna make it, but thankfully at, I think, the last Maryland service plaza before the Pelt Parkway, the rain stopped and twas overcast but dry as the Sahara{o/' will nev-er be the South of France....o/' *grin*} and I called Care on the Shellcell at like 10 of 5 to tell her where I was so she wouldn't worry coz I was like 15 minutes behind schedule due to the deluge. Then we played cell phone-tag and -finally- connected when I was, like one exit away from her...wheeeeeeeeee!!!! We met, took her car back to the Carey's and parked it then OFF TO SEE THE ROBBIE !!!!!!! Traffic is evil. plain and simple. How I wish it could be outlawed, and I don't experience road rage like other friends of mine do, I just -hate- to be daunted. It began to rain, but not as much as I'd come thru to get to Towson. *whew* And again, the combination of rain, rush hour, and people-who-forget-how-to-drive-in-the-rain seemed to be against us. I try to be the Pollyanna and optimistic whenever we come to a jam-up and we sing little snippets of EFO songs, trying to work our way thru one{ o/' heart can-not HOLD all of this, one man's grace is an-other man's hell..o/' *snicker*} from each album, only to discover that 'One Thousand Sarahs' is one of the most EVIL earworms invented by EFO thus far. {we discover the - -other- later in the evening, courtesy of Mr. Schaefer :) } Seeeoooooo.....FINALLY we reach the OLD DOMINION!!!!! {o/' You're tal-kin'......You mean the.....She is the o/' Well, we were, of course frustrated and concerned coz Robbie's first show was suppposed to start at 7 and it was almost 8. *sniffle* *pout* We get inside the door. Robbie is, of COURSE, on stage crooning and the dood asks for our money and I tell him we also need tickets for the second show. He informs us that there isn't going to -be- a second show. we were very sad. He then continues to e'splain that Robbie didn't start til 7:30 for some reason and he was only going to do one show but he was doing one set and taking a break then coming out for a second, mainly coz of taping for the live solo CD. {*happydance*} we get our happy lil 'jammin java' wristbands {think FRFF paper ones but DAYGLO yellow} and immediately Lawrence finds us. There are no seats up front any more, so he has garnered high stools at the coffee bar at the back for us. Perfect, actually; we can see over everyone else and are pretty much lined up center stage. Go Lawrence!!! *warmfuzzies* I -love- Robbie solo. Of course, we missed, like 3 songs...one of which was '30 Second Love Affair', which I love and was sorry to miss, and another was 'This my town', which i think would have been cool to HEAR him do in that, HIS town, but alas, the traffic Gods/spirits/fates were not with us. *sigh* We get wonderful songs that I didn't write down coz in the rush to get inside, I left my notebook in the car. But I DO remember 'I am a rock'. slow version. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......... But I went out at the break to get my notebook and a warmer shirt{that AC is really kickin at Jammin' Java!!!} There was this woman standing in our line of vision talking to 3 other people who were closer to the stage than us at the coffee bar and she had this lil kid in the CUTEST long footed pajamas and a cap -ever- toddling around while she talked coz she was kinda blocking my view. Once he came over close to me, I noticed the FRFF lanyard with the EFO badge and realized that this was Owen, Robbie's youngest. oh yeah...I had almost snarked at HELEN to move coz she was blocking my view. Way to go Shel-ly!!! Gripe at the performers's wife!! *grin* Thankfully, I dinna say anything. During break, we chitter with Lawrence and see Ellen { who had thankfully given us helpful directions for the journey.}We gripe about the fact that Mike is -not- in attendance and not supporting his friend, nor is Eddie. hee hee. :) The people at the front of the coffee bar leave, so we take the closest 3 seats. Wheeeeeeee!!!! Robbie takes the stage again and we're treated to MORE wonderful songs. 'Woman of Faith' *swoon* He mentions EFO and then says 'wouldn't it be GREAT if we could get the whoel crowd to yell 'EFO SUCKS!!' ?" Then he led us in it. "Wow, that'll be GREAT for the CD!!" ,he says. Sillyrobbie!!!!! He intros a song as "one of the songs that did -not- make it onto EFO's second album, 'Actually Not' because there were already 563 tracks on that CD" *snicker* and sings 'Far Away From Here'. Beautiful. "The Pride of Christopher Street"{which i LOVED the last time we saw him solo and am VERY hopeful that it's on the live album when it comes out} he goes into a wonderful, slow combined version of 'one' and 'bookends'. mmmmmmmmmmm. After that he asks "is my wife still here? she's gone, right? good! she hates when i screw with songs. 'It's a perfectly good song. There's no reason to screw with it!' And she's usually right." heehee. Go Helen! Then he says that - -this- song is her favorite and whether she's there or not, he has to do it for her. 'Starry Starry Night'. *melt* Ok...now, ever since seeing him do this song at the Birchmere, I must admit when I hear it on the radio or in my head, I hear Robbie doing it. So, I, like am enraptured..... He does 'Hitman', another song of his solo album that he tells us -he- doesn't like but i actually digged the tune. Then, JUST when i was coming down from the 'Starry, Starry Night' high, he does 'Number Six Driver'. *absosmurflymeltyjellogirlatthispoint* aNow, nothing against the fabulous Julie, mind you, but I have said before, after seeing Robbie do this song for the first time solo at the Birchmere, again, whenever I hear it, I hear - -him-. He then did 'Stupid American' and asked for 2 volunteers to go up on stage and sit in the 2 chairs that flanked either side. This is the point at which Carey and I -should- have just 'stormed' the stage and taken them, but we didn't. Which was unfortunate coz had -we- been selected, we could have sung along and the guy and girl that he picked had no CLUE what any of the lyrics were{though they dinna have to}, it just woulda been fun for us had WE been up there chiming in, ya know? Although the entire audience sang along to the chorus, which is always fun. Ok...here -technically- Robbie stopped his -actual- show and started the encore and his encore was just as long if not longer than his 2nd set. mmmmmmmmmrobbiegoodness. People were yelling out songs{Lawrence, Carey, and I kept yelling 'Jerusalem', coz we SO wanted to hear that} and, of course, someone yelled "FREE BIRD!!!" And I'll be -damned- if Robbie didn't PLAY it!!!! I mean, he had to stop when he didn't know any more, but reminded us that we asked for it. Next someone called out 'Bleecker to Broadway', which he started and struggled through remembering{'I don't SING the song...I just wrote it"} in the middle of it, he said "That's a good song. I like the change right then," and played a particular musical phrase again. And we all helped him with the words at times{though Care, Lawrence, and I think he may have skipped a verse. Who cares. He's ROBBIE!!} tee hee. Then. Robbie says for me, the quote of the evening: "You're probably thinking 'Why when I see Eddie From Ohio does he not spend this much time tuning?' Well, I -do-, it's just while Mike is talking.' I *CACKLED*!! No, really. Ask Carey and Lawrence. :) {coz Mike is definitely my -fave- of the four, but that line was -so- true!!} And we all applauded and laughed and that line was well worth the price of admission. He continues tuning and people yell more stuff out....someone suggests 'Tom Burleigh'. heh. Robbie says "I did a solo show once and someone yelled 'Old Dominion!!' And I sang....'You're tal-kin........You mean the.....She is the'. They didn't ask for that again." Ok...THIS is the second most EBIL earworm that we discovered, coz it is haunting BOTH of us still today and I am SURE it will for a long time to come!! Then he does 'Jerusalem'. We are -very- happy girls and guy. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Another evil earworm, albeit beautiful. We end up singing this all the way home, peppered with the 'Old Dominion' segments. Someone also yells 'ten's a perfect number'{Twenty Thousand Hearts} and he tells us that some DJ in Texas pointed out to him once that ten -wasn't- a perfect number; six, -THAT'S- a perfect number, then says that he knows we're thinking 'It's Texas. What do -they- know about math? To them everything's just...fuzzy!' He does 'Sahara'. mmmmmmmmmmmm. Someone calls out 'The Moons of Jupiter'. Robbie says 'Please; I can't even come up with a perfect number, let alone 'The Moons of Jupiter'!" He sings 'Twenty Thousand Hearts' He closes the encore with 'A Very Fine Funeral' and tells us that "Since you wanted this one and there's a guitar solo in the middle, -you- hafta do it...whether you whistle or play air guitar or whatever you wanna do...it's your bed!" And we all, of course, echoed the 'ver-y fine's as well. After the show, we of COURSE, supported our local artist and bought CDs and hung around to chat with him. which was -very- cool. Robbie is -SUCH- a nice guy and very down to earth and -very- much not full of pretention and bullshit. Very honest and truthful and yeah.... -and- he remembered me. *gasp* He said 'yeah...where have I seen you lately?' and I told him FRFF and Bryn Mawr's QUICK instore. And Carey, Robbie and I exchanged Davy Jones stories. hee hee. TOO funny!! I asked him about them playing the PNW for a few of my Seattle/Vancouver friends. Unfortunately for all of my dear ones out there, he matter-of-factly said 'no' when I asked him if they were going out there any time soon. :( The problem is they can't break even when they go out there and two years ago when they went, they lost money and can't really afford to do that now that they have kids and such.... He said that their booking agent is -trying- to get them booked for Bumbershoot or Vancouver Folk Fest and that if -either- of those happened, then they'd probably tack on a few Seattle dates or Vancouver and that people should email the Bumbershoot and Vancouver Folk Fest's websites and express interest in them. Or I also said that if they have a similar survey form like FRFF has that y'all going to these fests could write them in iffin ya wanted to see them. So. I tried. Sorry I didn't have better success. :( Anyway, that is my blow-by-blow account of Robbie's solo show at Jammin' Java!! I hope I served the Edhead community well and didn't put anyone to sleep. :) ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V4 #174 *****************************
