Wade Minter" Subject: Lime Kiln show - 7/22 I drove up from the RTP area to my wife's college stomping grounds of Lexington, VA, for the show at Lime Kiln, and it rocked the house! For those who haven't been there, Lime Kiln is a converted, well, limestone kiln that has been turned into a performing arts space. Really quite breathtaking - I highly recommend it. The concert was held in "The Bowl", a small ampitheatre area separate from the main theatrical stage. Mike got a nightful of material when the director of lime kiln opened the show by saying "There's no smoking in the bowl". :-) My sleep-addled brain (we drove back from Lexington to NC last night, so I got in at 3am) doesn't remember the entire setlist, but I can get some highlights. From Quick, we got everything except Cantering On Fool. The facial expressions during Monotony cracked everyone up. Mike even came clean during the intro to Abraham, and answered the question that's been bouncing around this list as to what the song is about. According to Mike, it's "about two and a half minutes". :-) They threw in some older stuff, too, including some of my favorites. We got Gravity, Stupid American, Omar's Got A Problem, This My Town, and Old Dominion. For those attending Falcon Ridge, they performed the song they're going to do in the Bob Dylan workshop, ("Don't Think Twice"? I think that was it), as well as the song they're going to do for the gospel workshop, whose name is escaping me. It's from O Brother Where Art Thou? The crowd was really into the show, singing along with gusto. There was even an appearance from the mysterious "Lady of the Rocks", a woman sitting up on the rock walls of The Bowl who kept yelling things like "Who's Eddie?" and, when they were introing Tom Burleigh, yelled "Play something else!" The band responded to her with some great quips about the Lady of the Rocks. In an "awwwwwww" moment, when they came back from the intermission, Robbie told us that someone had left a note in front of his mic. According to the note, this person was up in Maryland and found a punched-out copy of Quick a few weeks before the release date. They were torn - should they buy the album, knowing that the band wouldn't see any of the money, or should they not buy it, knowing that someone who didn't really care about EFO might buy it. So they bought it, and attached $20 to the note for the band to cover the CD. All in all, it was an incredible show in a gorgeous location. They said they'll be touring all fall to support Quick, so hopefully I'll get to catch them again if they make it down to Carrboro. If anyone was at the Lime Kiln show recording, I'd love to get a copy of it. Someone was supposed to be recording, but they had technical problems and didn't get the whole show. If you have it, please email me! - --Wade ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 10:04:29 -0400 From: "Cassie Ritter" Subject: Re: Lime Kiln show - 7/22 The new gospel workshop song is "Down to the River to Pray" and the arrangement is exactly the same as the "Brother" soundtrack / simply beautiful! Hi, Does anyone have an extra ticket they'd like to sell to the show Friday night? Lawn or regular seat - I don't care. Thanks! And then in the song, they broke into a 4 part harmony chanting Richard Petty, Richard Petty. Nice crowd and a great little place cut into the rocks produced very nice sound. Mike's dad was at the show and sat right behind us. The band was as sharp as could be. Julie's voice was perfect. The crowd was great except for that lady in the rocks. She was near us making comments for most of the second half of the show and I was just hoping that the band could not hear her. But they probably had been because Julie at one point said in a slightly annoyed tone that maybe she should leave. The crowd ranged from 3 year olds to people with canes and walkers. The "gift emporium" had the new cd and some new shirts and hats. They have a "Mesolithic" t-shirt now on sale. You folks going to Wolftrap and RF are in for a real treat. They did most of the new cd last night and I kind of felt that maybe they were using us as a tune up for the Wolftrap show. They did not miss a beat. Darren E. When I asked them what venue they were gonna' be playing, they said they weren't sure yet, maybe Henderson Lawn (across the street from the Lyric Theatre). Although, most pep rally bands play on a small stage at the intersection of College Ave and Draper. Anyway, for those that don't know...WolfTrap is now officially sold out! Great news for them, band news for my gang. Still looking for tickets...as many as I can get a hold of. Anyway, I might catch some of y'all there (although apparently, some of my friends might not). swb ===== steven nero7997@yahoo.com http://filebox.vt.edu/users/stblack2/ http://verticalhorizonfaq.tripod.com/ Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo!
