It's only been officially released for 2 days now! Some people are just getting the album now and are offering their opinions. Others are elaborating on previously stated reviews. I think EFO fans should take the opportunity to offer their critiques, opinions, and interpretations of the songs on the new album. It's all makes for a nice, intelligent conversation on a topic we all share great interest in. You have to admit that Eddie from Ohio is a band that produces some thought-provoking music. Don't you agree that there's a lot on Quick worth discussing? Personally, I've found the opinions that many on this listserv have offered to be insightful and fascinating & I would be happy to see more of that. - -Liam _______________________________________________________ Send a cool gift with your E-Card http://www.bluemountain.com/giftcenter/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2001 14:29:40 -0400 From: "Shawn McCausland" Subject: Quick Finally got my copy of "Quick" last night at the Fairfax Borders show, which was a hoot. The band did four shows in two days but looked none the worse for wear and inspired just as many laughs as ever (despite Julie saying Mike hadn't been funny all week). My thoughts on the songs: Quick - Seems thematically similar to "Good at That", aurally similar to "Bowling in the Hills" - not a bad mix Let's Get Mesolithic - Aside from the obvious comic effect, I think there's a decent message in this song (just, as EFO sometimes does, taken to the extreme), that of frustration with the modern complexity of male-female relationships. 15 years ago Billy Joel in "Modern Woman" heralded the rise of the career woman and how that skewed traditional roles; this song seems to be a backlash against that. And did anyone else notice how eerily similar Robbie sounds to Johnny Cash in this one? The Best of Me - My favorite song on this CD without question. Great melody and lyrics. Hey Little Man - Cheesy? Nah. A fun song to sing along with, which I caught my two-year-old doing on the way home from the show. Number Six Driver - Great traveling song. One Thousand Sarahs - Very radio-friendly melody, if not perhaps lyrics, which are fun anyway. Monotony - Mike-rap, I like it. Like Mesolithic it's a comment on modern times but a lot less subtle, and Mike isn't always quite so obvious in his songwriting. Candido & America - Another great storytelling song, which Robbie is so good at (see "Bones of a Lifetime," "Juan in the Rearview Mirror," "Sahara." - I think those are all his) Abraham - Another in a long line of Mike classics. Cantering on Fool - A good instrumental, but I still like "Mimosas" better Tommy the Canexican - Hilarious. And props to Mike for all the rhymes. Tom Burleigh's Dead - This one really is best with a singalong - I'm glad they got everyone in to do just that. Great Day - A showstopper, and a great tune to end with. Did someone say they recorded this at the March Barns show? Overall, a great CD. I like that a lot of the songs represent continuations of themes they've explored on previous CDs but that they're expanding their musical styles and abilities. And it definitely sounds like they had a good time with this one, which as others have pointed out is infectious. Great job guys! Trying to squelch debate, merely because we disagree, benefits no one. If you love a song (Mesolithic, for example) another person's critique of it should in no way diminish your appreciation for it's humor, rhythm, or energy. In fact, it may solidify it. Feel free to disagree with another person's analysis. . .you may change his/her mind! Just like a great book or movie, the pleasure I recieve in listening to EFO's music comes from many listens and increases as I gain additional perspectives on the history behind a song, the inspiration for lyrics, my own emotional response, AND other peoples opinions. When it comes to EFO, there are no opinions that I value more that those who love them best. I agree with Liam. It's nice to see a discussion on this list for a change. I sense that some are uncomfortable with certain critiques of the cd and I don't understand why. There has not been one negative review of the cd expressed by anyone who has given their view; and if someone did, so what? There has to be a line somewhere that doesn't need to or shouldn't be crossed. And if this list is so open to opinions and discussion, why can't someone have the opinion that they don't like the current discussion?
