Now that that's out of the way... ;) This album, I think, is a little different than the others EFO has done in the past (well, duh). Like someone mentioned previously, this album is more attuned to songs with EFO-type-humor to them. Even the more serious-sounding songs on the album- Best of Me or Candido and America- have some irony to them. I mean, how serious can an album be when DaVinci's Notebook is all over it? ;P I think lots of us aren't quite sure how to take this new album. It kinda reminds me of Fruvous' recent Thornhill-- lots of people didn't really like it, because it wasn't necessarily what they were used to hearing from the band. I have to say I was really nervous about getting Quick after reading some of the reviews posted here. But after buying it and listening- I'm really enamored with it. I love how each EFO album has a different overall feel and flow to it, and this one is no different. I love *listening* to this album, because, as someone else pointed out, you can tell they were having fun with it. I love listening to a band who loves to make their music. The 4-part harmonies that drew me to EFO in the first place are *so* strong on this album. My heart does a little dance every time I hear the little a cappella part at the end of "1000 Sarahs"-- I think this is going to be my favorite song on the album, and not just because they all say my name so beautifully. ;) I love Hey Little Man, because I can tell that Julie's heart is so into this song. Throughout the whole album, Julie's voice just rings with a "new mom" sound that makes every song just glow! I even like Mesolithic, because it's a departure from some of their other songs. I think EFO is pushing themselves to really try new things in their music- we saw it with Eddie's Concubine, which has rhythms that I still can't get a hold of. ;) We're seeing it with this album, which really shows that they're great musicians who have a wide range of abilities, but their strongest ability is their love of the music. Okay, that's all. For those of you who got this far, congratulations. I apologize for the rambling- I majored in philosophy. ;) - -sarah (just the one) ===== *** sarah with an h *** sarahrobeson at yahoo dot com Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Aside from our favorite band, EFO, make sure you check out Acoustic Syndicate at Falcon Ridge. They rock! On a side note, is it me or are there others that feel that a large majority of the "folk" music being churned out these days is either A) boring or B) depressing? I've been into the contemporary folk resurgence for sometime now and have heard and seen lots of bands but aside from a handful (EFO, Nields, Gorka, etc.), there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of originality anymore. The bands I do enjoy listening to tend to be those that make me feel happy, not sad. For example: 1) Brooks Williams - Helluva guitar player, writes some decent songs, but the majority of it bores me. 2) Lucy Kaplansky - Another fine songwriter, but tends to be depressing. Just listen to Flesh and Bone. Very introspective and haunting. Can she write a happy song? 3) Patti Larkin - An accomplished guitar player and songwriter but that voice. The above is just a sampling and the opinions are my own but I guess that's why EFO is so appealing......they're funny, can be serious, and overall make me feel good. Oops! Almost forgot, they do write some damn fine tunes. Actually they have done "Superman" from time to time... Although that may just be Mike & Robbie, or in the Jellyfish Blues Band configuration, not full-on EFO. I know I've heard that one, but I think that's the only REM I've heard from 'em... Had me laughing just as hard as the first time I heard Under the Lifeguard Stand. I'm glad I'm not the only one. And I also agree that change is wonderful. Nothing bores me more than a band that keeps putting out the same sound album after album. There's another wonderful artist named Ani DiFranco that has continuously evolved her sound over the years. She's lost some fans because of it, but EFO and Ani are two artists I never tire of listening to, because each album is fresh and distinct. t > I even like Mesolithic, because it's a departure from > some of their other songs. Here is the stuff I already know I'll be at: Friday - The Friday night Song Swap (Vance Gilbert, Susan Werner) Saturday - 1st half: The workshop stage 2nd half: The Main stage (Sorry, Jian!) Sunday - Gospel Wake Up Call (EFO!), then back to the workshop stage until 3:30 Main stage from 5:20 on So, lots to do for me! :) Okay, stupid question time: What is a song swap? What is the workshop stage like in comparison to the main stage? (Covered tent, seating, size, etc.) Does anyone else have any recommendations of artists I absolutely MUST check out there? I'm very open in terms of giving new groups a listen. It's because someone took me to an EFO/Nields show that I fell in love with EFO in the first place.
