I don't know what Mike meant to say with "Abraham" (seeing as how I'm not Mike), but I know what it put into my head when I was listening to it. FWIW, to me it seems to be the story of a father having to let go of his son for his son's best interest, even though it's tearing the father up inside. This would explain (I think) the whole biblical Abraham reference, where God orders Abraham to kill his own son to prove Abraham's devotion to God (It's been only 16 years since my last theology class in high school, so the odds of me being off-base are overwhelming). I'll apologize now to anyone who hasn't gotten that far in the Bible yet, but God spares Abraham's son in the last minute... a real cliff hanger. In the story of the song, I don't think that last minute reprieve comes through. Regardless of Mike's intended story, what I got out of it is the anguish you feel when you have to give up someone you love to save them from a fate they don't deserve due to your own selfish desire to hang on to them no matter what. That is called a run-on sentence for those grading along at home. I guess this is one of the great things about song writing - - you may have an idea of what you wanted to say, but once you let the song go it can mean so many things to different people. It's my surprise favorite track on the CD, with "Hey Little Man" a close second. Sorry for the rambling, but it's a Monday. Actually actually, I said it was my FAVORITE line, exactly BECAUSE he's using the "appropriate" phrase for an Irish drinking song & because the image it conjures IS so damned inaccurate, and because they HAD to know that while they were singing it.... Carl Simmons 12. Tom Burleigh's Dead - a great sing along on a unique topic. I love Robbie's guitar playing. Someone was bothered by the "band of men merry" part but I don't think the song is so much historically accurate, as it is a festive Irish-style drinking song (as evidenced by the party sounds in the background). ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 14:20:44 -0400 From: carl.simmons@martindale.com Subject: I don't want to spoil the party, but hey, why not.... Clay, Thanks for the effort digging deeper into this, although I don't quite buy this theory, at least not in its present form. Why then, does he say "I blew my one & only chance"? As if he chose the wrong thing instead of the right? But you got me thinking: What if this is more the other way, like, at the risk of making this sound like less than it is, "Daddy's sorry he's always out on the road, wasting his time playing for big dorks like the guy posting this, instead of with you guys?" His kids aren't that old, right? I could understand that. Heck, I've been there (not as a musician, but as a recovering workaholic). Just another theory, but.... Nothing but opinion, my friend, and I'm happy if others disagree. In fact I've noticed that I'm in the minority in thinking that "Let's Get Mesolithic" is EFO's worst song ever. I'll just skip track #2 on the CD and cover my ears in concert. (that's another thing: What's with all the mock-misogyny this time 'round, Mike? Gad, it almost sounds like an early Tonio K. album.) My wife Marion, who became an EFO fan mere minutes before I did, isn't digging the album in general at all at this point, but I've already caught my 10-year-old already singing to herself "U.B....unnatural blonde." We just gotta bring her to Bodles the next time they come 'round.... Although I'll be covering her ears during that "we'll hang out naked and display my privates and your rack" line.... It's difficult to pinpoint my dislike of it; perhaps it is too easily dated, trying too hard to be funny (EFO humor works the best for me when lightly seasoned or finding it after multiple listens), and as a duet Robbie and Julie's vocal personas don't quite match. Robbie has an extra gravely caveman growl, but Julie sounds like. . .well, Julie (a wonderful thing!) but does it fit? My favorite track for it's overall EFO sound and lyricism is Quick and for blast-out-the-windows harmonies, Great Day. I'd have to say my least favorite song on the disc is One Thousand Sarahs and for exactly the reason that Liam mentions.......it's an angry song and I hate angry songs. My vote for second least favorite song? Tommy The Canexican. IMHO, it's the epitome of "CHEESY". On the opposite end of the spectrum, the title track Quick is a brilliant radio friendly tune and Number Six Driver gives me chills. Awesome guitar intro. TP ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 15:13:56 -0400 From: "Shawn McCausland" Subject: Least favorite EFO tunes I've been reading the Quick reviews all day and was particularly interested by the notes on the songs people don't like. That got me to wondering, what are EFO fans' least favorite of their songs? I'm not talking about songs you're ambivalent about - like, for me, "This My Town" because I've heard it so many times in concert - but ones that make you push the "next" button on the CD player. As for myself, I can't think of anything since irodefidohome that I just can't stand, except maybe Bleeker to Broadway. Prior to that...well, I usually skip over the entire middle section of Actually Not, especially Red Footprints. I guess the fact that I've never heard them play any of those songs live either makes it seem like they're not that big with the band either. Thoughts?
