["Biklen, Andre] Quick review [Liam Sullivan ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 08:54:10 -0400 From: Clay Chilcoat Subject: EFO: Quick I went to Borders yesterday and got a copy of Quick - BTW, thanks to the Edheads who put the word out that Borders had copies of the disc for sale. I figured I'd have to wait until Tuesday to get a copy. And unlike all of the other Edheads, I think the new CD bites. Actually, I'm just trying to be different and gain attention.... Of course, I think it rocks! My favorite CD has been Actually Not ever since I started listening to EFO. Not to say that I don't like the newer CD's, I very much do, but I've always enjoyed the older stuff a little more. Until now. The songs on Quick remind me lyrically of the older EFO tunes combined with their ever improving vocal stylings. It's also great to hear Mike singing lead again. I used to feel that In Paradise was the most moving EFO song, but then I heard Abraham. Damn, that's one tear-jerking song... and I never figured to hear a song like that sung by Mike. All I can say is "Wow!". Now all I have to do is learn all of the lyrics in time to sing along at Wolf Trap. I figure that will be a very pleasant chore. Has anyone else heard the incredible sing-along potential with this song. Major props to the band on that song. I'm looking forward to that song live. Oh yeah. I'll be at FRFF too! Is there an EFO camp in the works. I thought there was discussion on that a while back. If anything, Edheads should unite and pick a time and place to meet and chat over the new CD. Just a random thought. - Jim Raimo (proudly wearing his "Let's Get Mesolithic " T-Shirt.) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 10:33:48 -0400 From: "Shawn McCausland" Subject: Wolf Trap tickets Hi all, I have three extra lawn tickets to the July 27 Wolf Trap show, available for $20 each. Quick-- I love it. I'd write more, but pretty much everything has been said. I will be at falcon ridge. Hopefully I'll have some sort of Nields Camp banner. And of course, all edheads are welcome. I plan on being on the bottom of the hill, over to the far left side (if you're facing the hill)... that is, providing it's not toooooo close to the quiet camping. I plan on arriving early thursday, so as to get the best spot possible, and get my car near my tent. I wish EFO would play No Left Turns in Jersey. Perfect song from anyone that had to drive the turnpike to get to FRFF (which hopefully i won't have to this year). Or Imagine Me. That's my very favourite live EFO song. yay! - -rhiannon At 09:39 PM 7/14/2001 -0400, you wrote: >We just picked up our copy at Borders at the Galleria in Boston... they had >a couple of copies if there's anyone else in the area... > >Out of curiosity -- anyone else going to Falcon Ridge in a couple of weeks? >It'd be cool to meet up with some other edheads... > >-erika ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 12:05:16 -0400 From: carl.simmons@martindale.com Subject: I don't want to spoil the party, but hey, why not.... Yeah, "Tom Burleigh's Dead" is a riot, especially the "traditional" yet understated line about "John Brown and his band of men merry" - yeah, I'll just BET that's how they were perceived at the time.... "Candido's" real strong, as are the Robbie songs in general, especially the title song & "#6 Driver".... I think Julie gets the MVP for this one, though - not just for "Great Day," but for her singing throughout, which is a lot more straightforward (i.e., less cutesy) than it sometimes was on Fishbowl. I need some help with the Mike songs though - I mean, I appreciate the fact that he can make an inordinate amount of words rhyme in a painfully brief period of time (particularly the "cracker stacker" bit in "Monotony" and "Tommy the Canexican" in general), and that this fits in perfectly with his persona, if you will (i.e., I'm sure it'll be hysterical live), but man, to my ears at least, this ain't "Bonny Brook" or "Atlantic" or even the maybe-too-mellow but uniquely insightful "From Dacca".... Although some insight into "Abraham"d probably be helpful in getting me over the hump, 'cause I'm not sure WHAT he's trying to say there (I have guesses, but that's all they are at this point).... The whole of this album is better than the sum of its parts. I like the way the songs flow together on Quick and the album improves with each song. The title track and the last three songs are definite EFO classics with a lot of good stuff in-between (excepting track #2).I also appreciate that EFO is trying new things musically which bodes well for the future. 1. Quick - a strong opener. I didn't like the Richard Petty part at first, but Robbie explained that the song was written for two audiences "For our Northern fans there's a discussion of the theory of relativity and we added a bridge about NASCAR for our fans in the South." 2. Let's Get Mesolithic - annoying melody, inane lyrics, - well even the best of bands have an occasinal stinker. 3. The Best of Me - cute song with a nice melody, but the joke wears thin after a few listens. 4. Hey Little Man - beautiful melody and harmonies, but the lyrics are a bit cheesy. That always seems to happen when folk musicians write songs for their infant children. 5. Number Six Driver - this a pretty song, carrying the sentiment one feels for home (previously expressed in Old Dominion) a notch higher. I remember Robbie sang lead on this song when they played it live last year, or am I remembering wrong? 6. One Thousand Sarahs - EFO venturing into new territory, an angry song covering a topic that may never have been written about in a song. 7. Monotony - a good funny one from Mike. I notice something new every time I hear it. 8. Candido & America - another good song that sounds nothing like anything EFO has done before. Has anyone read the book the song's based on? 9. Abraham - Mike shows he's not just a funny guy with a good, introspective song. 10. Cantering on Fool - a great instrumental, I'd love to hear this live. 11. Tommy the Canexican - a classic, funny nonsense song from Mike. I love the "Yee-hah, ay!" at the end. 12. Tom Burleigh's Dead - a great sing along on a unique topic. I love Robbie's guitar playing. Someone was bothered by the "band of men merry" part but I don't think the song is so much historically accurate, as it is a festive Irish-style drinking song (as evidenced by the party sounds in the background). 13. Great Day - another classic a cappella. I'm glad they recorded this live, you can feel the energy from the Wolf Trap audience. - -Liam _______________________________________________________ Send a cool gift with your E-Card http://www.bluemountain.com/giftcenter/ ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V4 #121 *****************************
