Long time no speak! Have to say I've only heard "Great Day" once myself, but it was at our intro to EFO at Bodles (pronounced "Boodles") Opera House in Chester, NY, where Mike kept 1) repeating the refrain, "With a name like 'Bodles,' it's GOT to be good!" and 2) referring to my wife as "the chortle-snorter." (For the benefit of the studio audience here: Greg & I know each other from a couple other lists, & have actually met face-to-face at FRFF, but Marion & I only came for Saturday & thus missed a reprise of "Great Day" during the Sunday gospel workshop.... BTW, does this now make us "orphaned hamster edheads"?) Based on yr updated specs below, I'll have to try yr radio station again, then.... The selection was cool, but the performance was painful.... I'd given up after the first few dozen tries, but that was like a year ago.... I am here, and since EFO very seldom makes it to Klumbus, the capital of Ahia (about 30 miles west of Nurk and 10 miles southeast of Gahanna ("if you can say banana, you can say Gahanna")), I've really only heard the one tune from the new album that they performed at FRFF last year, "Great Day," which is in itself a recommendation for the new CD. I have been assured that I have an autographed copy coming in the mail soon, though, tracks from which y'all will hear on The Folk/Rock Radio Buffet shortly after it is released. The lithping thinger problem has been solved with new encoding software, so all new songs are free of excess aspiration and I'm re-ripping songs as time permits. The new Kennedys CD, "Positively Live" is large, by the way. I highly recommend it. Pete gets to show off much more than on the studio recordings. Seems they're branching out. More so than before. I only own Portable and Fishbowl so I'm not sure what their earlier albums were like but a few of these songs sound like EFO only... not. Different. Good different though. Like EFO all grown up or something. I mean that in a good way. Of course, I'm biased because I *love* this band and they can do no wrong, but I think this CD will be at the top of my "favorites" list for a long time. I'd really like to hear the story behind "Tommy the Canexican" and a few of the others. I hadn't seen them in a while until last Saturday at the New Bedford, MA Summerfest (where they kicked major folk ass, as usual) so I'd only heard a couple of these tunes before. They did "Quick", which opens the CD up, and it almost instantly became an EFO favorite of mine. What the heck is a "Monobone" and a "Canexibone?" I am fairly sure that "Tommy the Canexican" is about Tom Landa , of "Tom Landa and The Paperboys" fame. His heritage is Mexican, and he lives in Canada (and may have some Canadian heritage, I can't recall though). At any rate. He lives in Vancouver, as the song notes, and just has too many similarities to not me a story about him. Any one else wanna chime in about this song? We had Tom Landa and The Paperboys here last year and they were great. If you ever get a chance to see them, go. I mean, of course I like, or else why would I be on this list, but really. > I'd really like to hear the story behind "Tommy the Canexican" and a few of > the others. Tommy the Canexican is Tom Landa, front man for the Paperboys. EFO & the Paperboys have played several memorable double-bills here on the West Coast. But I think the song itself is not so much about Tom as it is about wacky rhymes. :) > What the heck is a "Monobone" and a "Canexibone?" You think *you* were confused... I play the bones (they make the sharp clacking sounds occasionally heard in Irish music). You need to have two of them, because they clack against each other. So when I saw a "monobone" listed in the liner notes, my first thought was "Ooookay... how does *this* work?" :) But I rapidly figured out that it had to be something else entirely. I have consulted Mike and learned that the Canexibone is what's heard on the first three notes after the drum roll. After sober thought, I am reasonably sure that the "bone" is short for "trombone" and the prefix just coordinates with the song title. In short, "monobone" and "canexibone" is code for "Mike's trombone impression". He's quite good at it, isn't he? A few years back, when I was listening to a lot of a cappella, I was repeatedly amazed at just how well a human voice can imitate various instruments, even ones that do not strike us as being particularly human- producible. They've even got vocal percussionists. *** "This is my home. This is my only home.
