And summer jobs, and during-the-year jobs (even light-duty ones like private tutoring can add up fast). The cost may seem insurmountable, but look at it this way: $150 airfare (you live on the East Coast, right? Shouldn't run you much more than this, assuming you don't mind cattle-car flights.) $300-$450 cruise (depending on what kind of cabin you get and how many people are in your cabin--BelAir kinda glosses over this in favor of hawking the $450 ocean-view double-occupancy cabins, but there are dinkier cabins and multi-person cabins available for us penurious folks. Draw up a budget and drop BelAir an email.) $95 port tax $20 airport<->port transfers (if you don't buy the airfare through BelAir; they're free if you do.) And that's ALL the charges. (I took a thorough look at the finances of all this myself.) I bet you could do this on the cheap for about $600, or less than 70 hours of working at Starbucks. As far as the cruise itself goes, it's not as bad a deal as you probably think. Compare it to what you'd pay for a landlubber vacation: say, $25/night for a hostel, another $20/day for food/caffeine, $15 for a concert ticket (for EFO, natch), and, since it's a vacation, maybe some spending money too. Even a shoestring vacation day will run you $60 or more. Sure, a cruise is more per day. But not THAT MUCH more, once you figure in what you'd be paying on a vacation anyway. Hope this helps you rationalize matters... :) - --nicole twn *** The obvious mathematical breakthrough would be development of an easy way to factor large prime numbers." --Bill Gates, in _The Road Ahead_ Visit Nicolopolis! http://wwwcsif.cs.ucdavis.edu/~carlsonn nmcarlson@ucdavis.edu ana.ng@tmbg.org carlsonn@seclab.cs.ucdavis.edu ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2001 11:58:40 -0500 From: "Brian Holmes" Subject: Madison!!! All I really have to say is THANKS BEN!! Who ever you are! The show in Madison was the best EFO show I've ever seen! For those of you who were not there...WHERE THE HELL WERE YOU!? Just kidding of course... EFO played at the Pres House in Madison Wisconsin last night, as the result of a devoted EFO fan named Ben continually writing EFO and asking them to do a show there. On a total whim, two of my friends and I decided to drive up from Chicago to see them play. What a pay off! Let me tell you! The Pres House is in an old church on the campus of the University of Wisconsin. The ticket person told me it held about 250 people. The seats we a little more than half-full, maybe 150 people. It was REALLY nice. You could hear everything. The bass was a little quiet, but I think we were sitting to close. Anyway, they did a GREAT mix of songs, the people were great, the promoter was great. Alice Peacock was great etc... This show was in SHARP contrast to the last time I saw them about a month ago in Chicago. EFO was GREAT the place blew big time. Anyway, just wanted to share... Thanks, Brian ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2001 16:58:56 -0400 From: Harry A Keates Subject: HAKMusic Video Challange, with a prize Hi Folks, thanks to everyone who wrote me in regards to the Nields DoReMi video (with the special EFO appearence), I appreciate your nice comments. In honor of Hakmusic.com surpassing 2,500 unique visitors and DoReMi surpassing 600 plays, making it the most watched Hakmusic produced video (trailing only the award winning "Free" produced by the Kennedys), and in hoping that you will find it a fun thing to do, I offer up the first ever HAKMUSIC VIDEO CHALLENGE, with a **special prize** - a CD of music videos - bigger and at a higher resolution than can be shown through the web - from the Hakmusic archives. The challenge is easy to play and has two EFO questions. If you haven't seen the videos yet, you can see them at www.hakmusic.com. For DoReMi, follow the Nields link. If you have a 56k modem, right click on the video link and select "save target as" to save the video to your hard drive. It will take a while to download, so be prepared to do something else in the meantime. If you have a cable modem and plan on watching more than once or twice, please download the file to your hard drive as well. WARNING: spoiler information follows. If you believe that all the artists in the video are really singing along with Do Re Mi, or don't want additional informtion that may shatter the illusion that they all are, please don't read anything down below here. : ) OK, for anyone who is still reading, I've been asked a number of times what songs are actually being played by the other artists in the video, and by the Nields on the main stage (and the song where Dave is on the grass). Believe it or not, they are not all actually singing DoReMi; shocking, I know, those snazzy special effects really do a number. : ) Anyway, here is a little challenge to see who can guess the most songs. Everyone who answers at least one question correctly will be entered into a drawing to win the video CD. The more questions you get right, the more entries you will have, and the more likely you will be to win. So, for instance, if you get questions 1 and 3 right, and two out of three in quesiton 5, you will get 4 entries. Anyone who answers all 6 questions correctly (must have at least 2 right on question 5) will get 5 bonus entries added on. If you have no idea, just guess, everyone else will be doing the same. Make sure you send all replies to me personally at harry@hakmusic.com !!! Do not hit "reply" or it will go to the list. What song is actually being played by the other bands in the middle section of the video (between 1:40 and 2:25): 1) Moxy Fruvous : 2) Eddie Fron Ohio : 3) Dar Williams : 4) Tom Landa and the Paperboys : and 5) Name three of the songs that the Nields are playing in parts of the video (not including DoReMi) - there are five songs altogeather that this footage is taken from (worth 1 to 3 entries, one entry for each rigth answer): Bonus Question: 6) What do the following 2 songs: the one where Robbie from EFO is clapping his hands over his head, and the one that Katryna, Nerissa, and Fruvous are singing togeather at the workshop stage with bubbles, have in common with DoReMi and the song that the Paperboys are playing in their clip. !!!!! PLEASE remember to send your replies to me personally, not to your list!! send to: harry@hakmusic.com !!!!! Entries will be accepted for one week. One entry per person. if you have any questions, please write me. Thanks! Harry p.s. my apologies to those of you who are on multiple lists and have gotten this a few times. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO!
