Failing that, there's probably two choices. 1) Set up camp Thursday night, dash down, dash up, or 2) Get someone else to set up a tent/save space for me ahead of time (any volunteers? nicole), drive to Virginia, and dash up afterwards. I mean, if EFO's going to dash up in the middle of the night and perform the next day, it should be easy to dash up and just watch, right? I'm sure I'll have second thoughts when I'm a sleepless wreck at FR, but then, I usually am, so it can't make much difference. I'll post set lists and comments for the two Ann Arbor shows some other time if nobody else does. I heard the cd design was some 10 yr retrospective thingee w/ lots-o-pictures. The general color scheme black & white with a background color of possibly maroon/red. I doubt the title I suggested "far away human voices" will make the cut. It probably will be something like "eddie...eddie from ohio" which was bantered about around 2/01. * I do know for sure they did a photo shoot in Early Feb for the back cover...the next cd has a comical feel like LOFB so it will have a less than-serious title...sorry to drag this on Joe! I did vote efo btw. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Apr 2001 13:24:34 EDT From: ImSerius2@aol.com Subject: EFO The Ark 3/31/01 EFO The Ark, Ann Arbor MI 3/31/01 Early Show 7:30 What a blast! I went with a friend who opted only for the late show, so she dropped me off and went on to dine, shop and otherwise entertain herself till 9:30. I was first in line, decided it was early enough, went to grab a coffee and came back to find I was NOT first in line anymore - boo hoo. Seriously, I was third instead, and got to pass a lovely hour chatting with a newfound friend and fellow EFO fan AND Rubber Stamp Enthusiast - what are the chances?? So she and I and her friend were first up the stairs and snagged front row seats no problem. The band came out with absolutely no fanfare, with all the spotlights on, the crowd went wild, an announcement was THEN made saying 'please welcome Eddie from Ohio'b&it was backwards! (they got it right for the second show, more on that later) Robbie was the man in black - crushed velvet shirt, black pants, the obligatory shoes. Julie was in black slacks and what Robbie referred to as 'her poinsettia shirt', a black low-cut wraparound number with large red flowers. She looked great. Mike was in a light blue t-shirt and nondescript pants and sneakers, Eddie had a black shirt with a white t-shirt underneath. They opened with 'Stupid American', and held the last note an impossibly long time, to great applause. Then a rockin' version of 'One'. In honor of the NCAA basketball hoopla, Mike thanked us for 'making EFO your Final Four'. Next, 'HoJo's On Waukegan' and 'Santa Margherita'. Then, from the new CD (due out July 17), Mike's 'The Best of Me' - what a hoot! Julie then prefaced 'Hey Little Man' by showing us Liam's picture in a little pocket photo frame that Robbie had given her for Christmas, complete with sound, so we got to hear Liam gurgling and cooing - after which Robbie said 'doesn't it make you wanna puke?' and Mike joked that he was going to trick her for the late show and change the digital message on the frame to an Exorcist-type voice saying something questionable, but he didn't. "We kid Julie, but she's a chick in a guy band". Then, per Mike, a song about obsolescence, despair, and destruction - 'Fifth of July'. "Is everybody havin' a good Lent?' Woman of Faith Then their take on the Theory of Relativity, 'Quick'. In honor of their 10 year anniversary as a band, they are selling 'Jugglerb&' for $10, and did 'Porchlight' in honor of that fact. Then, featuring Crouching Robbie and Hidden Julie, 'Let's Get Mesolithic' . How fun to finally hear this one for real! It's brilliant. Then Eddie's turn to shine on the drum solo in the middle of 'The Bridge'. Words fail me. He worked everything from one end to the other, starting with the bongos only, then one bongo and the djembe, then the djembe and one drumstick and part of the drum kit, then all drum kit with 2 sticks. Splinters were flying through the air. Simply incredible, and an immediate standing-O after. Not often that you see a standing-O in the MIDDLE of a song. They ended with a raucous 'Old Dominion'. First encore, after telling the history and that 'nobody makes death more fun than the Irish', was 'Tom Burley'. Second encore, a wild 'Eddie's Concubine'. And then the best part - knowing that I was going to get to see it all again!!! Said goodbye to my new friends, and was eventually booted out into the hall with I think 6 other hardy souls geared up for show #2. The way it works is they allow the poor folks who've been waiting outside for an hour and a half first dibs at the front rows - they didn't let us back in until about 2 or 3 minutes after the other folks had been let in. So I had to suffer in the second row this time around. (honestly, I have to say the sound was a wee bit better even just being that extra 3 feet back, so, it was okay) The second show - "The first show was so SOBER - but the late show - somehow you gotta want it more". "We're so excited, we're gonna set our clocks ahead one hour - are you with us?" Stupid American One HoJo's on Waukegan - which I never knew was about Mike's parents A treat - '20,000 Hearts'- written for Robbie's sister and her problem with math Then, also written for Robbie's sister (?), 'The Best of Me' Managed to jot down just a few of the nicknames rattled off in that song, like Sausage Toes, Tuna Pants, Dr Romance, New Crusader, and my favorite, UB for Unnatural Blonde. 'Hey Little Man' - with the same thing, Liam's photo and us listening to him gurgle - and it was Eddie this time around who said 'you should have seen what I put in when we gave it to her'. To which Robbie replied 'Eddie speaks once a show!'. And Mike teased Julie, saying 'he gave ME liquor' 'Imagine Me' 'Very Fine Funeral' - the designated cut this show to honor the band's 10 year anniversary and special deal on 'Jugglerb&'. 'Quick' - with Robbie doing a wonderful imitation of snooty UofM physics students actually EXPLAINING the theory of relativity. Then - a completely breathtaking offering of 'Oh My Brother' - there was more than one gasp (including mine) when that one started, and perfect silence when it ended. Then, 'setting out to write the most p.c. song I could and failing miserably' - - 'Lets Get Mesolithic'. Again, 'The Bridge', with another amazing drum solo by Eddie - if possible, there were even more splinters flying by the end of this one, and he collapsed face down on the drum kit at the end. Then, a brief detour into Bunch Heads and how if you play their CD's backward they play 'It's a Sunshine Day' - 'all our songs are about the Brady Bunch - Farmer Brown is about Sam the Butcher, Imagine Me is about Alice'b&.it was hilarious. Another detour to talk about the cruise, after some prompting from the audience - and by the way, the 2001 cruise falls on the Feast Day for St. Stubing, and be sure to check out Mike's cornrows in Nassau. Finally, 'Old Dominion', possibly even more rowdy than the first show - certainly more folks singing along. First encore, 'Tom Burley', where, after instructing us to sway, Mike said 'but be sure to sway in the opposite direction - we don't want the Ark to capsize'. Then in honor of folks in from Cadillac MI (Paul, was that you? Can't believe I didn't say hi!!!), the ever-popular and goose-pimply 'Farmer Brown'. Last encore, an even more wild and crazy version of 'Eddie's Concubine', with Mike shaking everything every which way and both Robbie and Mike doing their best to crack Julie up (and succeeding a few times). It was a blast!!! And that was it! So, two shows, with a lot of similarities but enough differences to make it a real treat. The first show had more music and the second had more fun. A great combination!! Sorry this is so long, but when it comes to these guys, I can't be concise. Eddie said, "That's nothing, you should've heard what was originally on the frame when I gave it to her," followed by Mike saying that that would be the one time in the show when Eddie got to speak. While people were still laughing at that, Robbie went back to Eddie and in a very Mike Ford like voice, growled "Now shut the fuck up!" It was probably funnier if you could hear it. I was cracking up through the rest of the song, though. Eric ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Apr 2001 14:42:34 -0400 From: Thomas Ehrhardt Subject: Re: Efo rapid sell-outs.... What I find interesting is that they sell-out a show in a fairly large venue "the Filene Center" in one+ day...and wont upgrade the venue for the upcoming Atlanta show to a place that seats 1,200+...I guess I'll have to buy my tickets on the 1st day available for the inevitable VP show this summer...and hope for the best...other than the DC/Virginia/Maryland area we in the SE come out in droves for Efo and are some of the most supportive fans in the country...we look forward to seeing them soon wherever they wind-up performing! ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V4 #64 ****************************
