I talked to Thomas and here's the deal...he's going to burn me a copy of the show and I'll make the same offer he did to burn copies for others a la a "tape tree" but better quality. If you're interested in obtaining a copy of this show and Thomas wasn't able to make one for you, email me at rdfinch@mindspring.com. And it will be a big help if you put "EFO show cd" in the subject as I get more email than any one person should! - - rox ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Mar 2001 22:06:03 -0500 From: McCauslands Subject: March 6 show I'm a long-time lurker and occasional poster, and just felt like I had to let y'all know what a completely stunning performance EFO gave at the Barns of Wolf Trap on March 6. I've been going to their shows for 3.5 years now, including the cruise last year, and many times have been wowed by the sheer entertainment value of the performances, mostly by virtue of the fact that the band was having so much fun on stage. And while last night was certainly great for entertainment - I have not laughed that hard at one of their shows for a long time - what made it so special was that the band members themselves were so moved by the music. Judging by what they told me later, a lot of that had to do with Jon Carroll sitting in on piano, organ, and accordion, which he did for most of the show. Robbie said that Jon was coming up with a lot of what he played on the spot, and that it was his ability to get inside the songs and interpret them, and put those interpretations into music, that were so moving to the band. The defining moment came in (to no surprise) "Oh My Brother" - I don't know how Julie finished that song, because she was weeping or close to it for most of it. Jon's playing, especially his intro, was so incredibly beautiful that it inspired the band to play and sing what they unanimously agreed was the best version of that song they've ever done. Having Jon there, and also Chris Watling on sax and accordion for a few songs, allowed the band to play some songs they hadn't in a long time, and with some interesting arrangements and variations. In particular, they played several songs off Juggler, including Fly South, Continents of Time, and Step Into the Outside. The new songs were very cool - I especially liked Quick, which I hadn't heard before, and I like Best of Me more every time I hear it (especially with the backhanded dedication Mike gave it for my wife's and my 8th anniversary). The encores absolutely rocked - Love Me > Like a Man with piano and sax solos, and The Wait by Robbie Robertson and The Band ("I pulled into Nazareth, I was feelin' 'bout half past dead...") that everyone, including opening act Ellis Paul, got to sing a verse on. It was an incredible evening, one I won't soon forget. I can hardly wait for the new CD, which they said is due out July 16 (and Jon Carroll apparently plays extensively on it). They're doing a CD release show at Wolf Trap on July 27, with Fighting Gravity and Great Big Sea, who will apparently join them for "Tom Burley's Dead" if not other songs - should be awesome. Til next time - Shawn PS - If anyone happened to tape last night's show, please email me - I've got to have a copy. Thanks. ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V4 #44 ****************************
