It takes place in Hill Auditorium on the UofM campus - a gorgeous old, acoustically perfect symphony hall, with soaring ceilings and wonderful detail. It seats 4100+, and it was a sell-out. There were 2 emcees for the evening, Detroit radio personality Matt Watroba, and Canadian singer/songwriter Connie Kaldor. They took turns performing and introducing each act. While they were performing their piece, the stage folks would be unobtrusively setting up the scene for the next act. So there was never a break in the music, which was really nice. The down side is that you only get to hear 3-4 songs per performer - not nearly enough. The up side is the Ark makes a concerted effort (no pun intended) to book all the festival acts for full-length shows for the 1-2 months following. So EFO will be doing 2 shows there on 3/31 - hurray! EFO was the first act of the second half of the festival, after the intermission. They came on at approx. 8:30 pm. And they ROCKED! First up, 'Old Dominion', which was rollicking fun. Then they announced that the new CD is done!! And performed Julie's song for Liam, 'Hey Little Man'. And what a song THAT was. I am in awe of their vocals and harmonies. Then a turn on the djembe (sp?) for Eddie - he pranced and strutted all over that stage and just blew us all away on a wild intro to 'Irish Dream'. Mike commented, peering out and up into the ornate hall, that it was like being at the People's Choice awards or something - and they also officially confirmed that this was their largest indoor concert audience ever. Then - 'Operator', which just brought the house down. Can Julie's voice be any more powerful? Man, it was just awesome. And speaking of Mike - what's up with this Amish beard he's got going? That and the gas-station attendant shirt was quite a fashion statement. Julie was sleek and elegant in a long black jacket, Robbie had the shoes on, and Eddie was Eddie in jeans and Hawaiian shirt. And Matt Watroba, emcee, messed up big time during his intro by saying 'they're not from Ohio and there's no one in the band called Eddie - but please welcome Eddie From Ohio'. Duh!!!! Major faux paus on his part! He was corrected, of course, before Eddie started his drum solo. Also on the bill - Chris Buhalis, Todd Snider, Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer, Weavermania, David Wilcox, Richard Thompson, and Peter Yarrow. At the end of Peter Yarrow's set, he called all the other performers out to join him on 'If I Had a Hammer' and 'Blowin' in the Wind'. Julie took solo turns on verses in both songs, and Mike had a harmonica solo on 'Blowin...'. They all looked relaxed and happy through it all. Peter Y. said some nice things about the idea of passing the 'folk' baton (or in this case, I guess that'd be the 'folkin' baton') on to this younger generation of performers. The entire night was great, and EFO definitely made their mark, and I can't wait till March 31!! You really made the EFO portion come alive. "Peter Yarrow's Set" would make a great tongue-twister! Back in the early 70s I went to see Peter Paul and Mary at the Berkeley Community Theater. Mary was sick with a sore throat and they cancelled / postponed the show after Peter and Paul came out and explained the situation. Afterwards, Peter hung out behind the theater talking to a bunch of kids about Martin Buber's "I and Thou". Those were the days. (I think Susan Werner appeared in a PBS show with PPM awhile back.) - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Sunday, January 28, 2001 1:15 PM Subject: EFO at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival > Eddie From Ohio, the Ann Arbor Folk Festival, Jan. 27, 2001 > > This was my first ever visit to the A2FF, and it was quite an experience. He spent a lot of the last two songs running around behind everyone on stage and taking pictures. As for the beard...it's kind of scary. Very Amish, though. Julie said that the band's done recording all the vocal tracks for the new album, too, but not all the instrumental and drums and stuff. I don't know how well you'll be able to see Mike's facial hair, as I was sitting way up in the second balcony, but you can see everyone from the show singing with Peter Yarrow, and Mike's harmonica solo. Once I develop them, maybe I'll find some way to post them.... - -Megan >In a message dated 1/28/01 7:00:20 PM Eastern Standard Time, >nmcarlson@ucdavis.edu writes: > >> > And speaking of Mike - what's up with this Amish beard he's got >going? >> That >> >> PLEASE tell me someone has pictures of this. :) > >I dunno if anyone has pictures of it, but Mike must have lots of >pictures of >the back of everyone's heads.
