In the larger clubs, there is a separate mixing board just for monitors. In this scenario whoever is the house monitor tech will run three individual mixes for Julie, Mike and Robbie. For two years eddie has been using a shure wireless in-ear system which is always run by Bob from the FOH (front of house) console or mixing board regardless of whether there is a separate monitor board or not. In the lesser ideal situations, we are limited to the number of auxiliary or auxs sends that the house console has in determining the number of monitor mixes (this being the case where there is not a separate mixing board for monitors). Clay mentions a version of a Mackie console which has 6 aux's. We see this particular console all over the country (CA to ME to FL). With 6 auxes, I can run 4 monitor mixes and have two aux's for effects. A majority of the smaller consoles have only 4 aux sends. In this case, I can run 3 monitor mixes and have one send or aux for effects. Julie and Robbie would share in this scenario. There tastes for what they listen to on the stage are similar; but, not the same (not quite ideal but always a great show anyhow). In some of the really small rooms there is an older console which may have only three aux's. In this case Julie, Mike , and Robbie will all share the same monitor mix. You may notice Mike's bass amp appear in this case. We do tour with an extra monitor, power amp and EQ for venue's that have the auxiliary capability but are only wired for one or two mixes (unless we fly). We always travel with eddie's in-ear system. I hope this is not too much techno babble. I always welcome your questions about the live production of efo. I am digging the Moxy rap and hope we see them sometime this summer. Jian is opening for Dar Williams Saturday night in a cozy venue in Peterborough, Ontario and I'll just ask him! The place seats less than 200, and the performers always mingle. Second last time Dar was in Toronto, she opened for Moxy Fruvous and it was great! I guess this is the reciprocal, but then, where are the rest? Dunno; I'll post if I find out anything. I'm heading to Ann Arbor on the weekend to see EFO for the first time. It will be short, but so far as I know, they don't come up to Ontario, so it's this or nothing. I only have Fishbowl, so I'll be stocking up on CDs there! Vicki > Didn't someone say about a year or so ago that Moxy Fruvious had broken > up? OK, I've got a question. Pardon my ignorance: just what are the monitors for, anyway? I mean, I realize that the band is behind the speakers, but it seems like they should still be able to hear each other, adjust tuning, etc., just from the ambient sound. I can see that they could have difficulty adjusting dynamics... is that it? What am I missing? How do monitor mixes differ from the house mix? If we could listen in on, say, Mike's mix, would we hear 1) lots of bass, the better to get feedback on his own playing, or 2) almost no bass, the better to hear his bandmates? Would Julie's mix have extra Robbie & Mike to compensate for being directly in front of the drum set? How much is personal taste and how much is necessity? > I hope this is not too much techno babble. I Never! :) (for me, anyway) Thanks for sharing! - --nicole twn *** "Don't worry; this will all make sense once you've dropped some acid." - --former computer science professor, on computer architecture Visit Nicolopolis! http://wwwcsif.cs.ucdavis.edu/~carlsonn nmcarlson@ucdavis.edu ana.ng@tmbg.org carlsonn@seclab.cs.ucdavis.edu ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V4 #15 ****************************
