There seems to be a strong cross-over between EFO and Moxy Fruvous fans. Since the chances of me seeing Moxy Fruvous in Central Iowa are slim, why should I, a raving EFO fan, purchase a Moxy Fruvous CD and which one(s) would those of you who are cross-overs recommend? I think the real question, Andrea, is why should you *not* buy a Moxy Fruvous CD? I mean, they've got it all: thick harmonies, near-perfect instrumentation, insightful lyrics, and to top it all off, witty banter at their live shows. I'm not sure how to convince other than by saying that once you listen, you'll be sorry you waited so long. ;) My suggestion for a first CD, although other people might disagree, is Live Noise. This is their "live" CD, and it really shows just how much Fruvous can do. The disc has songs from most of their studio albums, as well as a few covers, and some snippets of the aforementioned "witty banter." If you want to get a sort-of "summary" of Fruvous' work, this is a good disc. Um, okay, that's all I have to say on that. hi. - -sarah sarah with an h periwinkle at cmu dot edu www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~robeson/ "my beloved one, your eyes shine through me, you are so divine to me, your heart has a home in mine. we won't have to say a word, with a touch all shall be heard. when I search my heart it's you I find, my beloved one." -Ben Harper ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 11:55:47 EST From: YourPalCM@aol.com Subject: Moxy Fruvous Recommendations "Live Noise" is 10000000 time better than any of their studio recordings. And I would guess that 99.9% of MF fans would agree that it is definitely the first thing you should buy. After that, in my opinion, "Bargainville" is next in line. But as far as what you should purchase second, I think it depends on taste. Bargainville is an awesome album, and if you like the sillier stuff (even though the silly stuff often has a serious message) then it's the one for you. If you like the sweeter more serious stuff, then Thornhill may be a good bet. I don't own Wood or the B-album so i can't comment on those. The C-album is better for people already into fruvous. You Will Go To The Moon is the first one I bought, and though I loved it, I listened to my friend's copy of Bargainville way more often. That is my opinion!!! There are a few songs on "You will go to the Moon" that I love, but the rest I could do without, making it my least favorite MF CD. Wood is an acquired taste, in my opinion. There are only a few songs that really stand out but it's solid from start to finish. The B album is a LOT better than The C album, but both of them are mostly rarities and outtakes. I really like the B-album. The C album has "Pisco Bandito" which is fabulous but the rest of the CD is mostly clearly B-sides and the like. So, in summary, if I had to put them in order: (1) Live Noise (2) Live Noise (3) Live Noise (4) Live Noise (5) Bargainville (6) Thornhill (7) The B-Album (8) Wood (9) The C-Album (10) You Will Go to the Moon Your Pal, Chris Mal ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 12:31:03 -0600 From: "Biklen, Andrea" Subject: Thanx for the recs! I appreciate the response to my request for Moxy Fruvous recommendations. I've taken the plunge and ordered Bargainville (from Bulletproof!) and Live Noise (from Amazon--for some reason Bulletproof wasn't letting me select Live Noise). I now will anxiously await them! I did read some reviews on Amazon and Moxy Fruvous was compared to They Might Be Giants, of whom I have been a fan since college. TMBG actually played in Des Moines, Iowa once and my best friend and I were notable at the concert as being a) two of the few people close to the age 30 and b) in business casual attire. I tend to blend in better at EFO concerts. Thanx! They do everything, and do it *well*. EFO like Fruvous! [1][2] So will you! :) 2) Hmm... which to get, which to get... Go for their live album, "Live Noise", then get "Bargainville". Once you've done that, you'll have a pretty good cross-section of what they do, and you'll be better able to decide whether you'd next like to go for their serious stuff (e.g. "Wood") or their silly/political/satirical stuff (e.g. "B" & "C" albums). Hope this helps - --nicole twn [1] Eddie's opinion of Fruvous, as near as I can recall, went something like: "They sing so well... play so well... Awwww, Nicole, why'd you have to bring THEM up?" [2] And Fruvous likes EFO, so the score's even. *** "I vote to protect the environment!"--bumper sticker seen on SUV Visit Nicolopolis! http://wwwcsif.cs.ucdavis.edu/~carlsonn nmcarlson@ucdavis.edu ana.ng@tmbg.org carlsonn@seclab.cs.ucdavis.edu ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 14:50:38 EST From: YourPalCM@aol.com Subject: Moxy Fruvous = TMBG?
