Another great show at The Birchmere. Even though they'll be in Richmond in a little over a week I have to see a show at this great venue. I always leave tired but happy from smiling and laughing and clapping and singing. Everyone was in top form. Mike Clem was king of the segue. Here's the setlist which is not in order. The best part, which I'll save for last, is the 4 brand-spankin'-new songs unveiled for the first time. Porchlight Hail Mary Shy of Redemption Very Fine Funeral Farmer Brown (Joe was a bit late for his dance. I think there's a rehearsal in the morning) :-) Bookends Gravity Omar's Got A Problem (dedicated to yours truly who is celebrating a birthday on the 17th. hmmmm...I think I'm flattered) :-) The Train Song Operator Stupid Americans (dedicated to the election. Robbie's answer to the Euros who are laughing at us: "Shhuuttuuuup" Old Dominion Woman Of Faith Eddie's Concubine Loitering in the Lobby Atlantic (a revised version which is very nice) Great Day (dedicated to Liam who just turned 9 months) Eddie's INCREDIBLE solo (I'm always amazed watching him play and I know I shouldn't be, but MY GOD! He went from percussion instrument to percussion instrument all the way from the congas to the drum set. It's amazing) (I'm forgetting a couple of songs, but I'm too tired to really think about it) Now, the new songs. All of these range from the humorous to the hilarious: The Best of Me (Mike: Will probably be the least requested wedding song after Rolling Pin) Let's Go Mesozoic (A romantic ditty) 1000 Sarahs (A Robbie song about schoolgirl rivalry) Tom Brody's Dead (the apostrophe is a contraction, not the possessive) (A sing-along about Julie's grandfather who is "famous" for teaching her to put her fist in her mouth. Ok, that's not true, but she CAN do it.) The news is that EFO will be working on a new release scheduled for sometime in the summer of 2001. Yay!!! For you people going to Friday and Saturday's show: You will LOVE it!!! Oh, BTW, Grey Eye Glances put on a superb 35 minute set. don (who's completed his 5 shows in 4 days tour) What we do in love and kindness Is all we ever leave behind -- Carrie Newcomer, "Bare To The Bone" Don Semmens; Richmond VA; donsem@concentric.net Visit my Regan Site http://www.concentric.net/~donsem/regan.htm ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2000 00:25:54 -0800 (PST) From: Nicole Carlson Subject: EFO: Our Fair City Hi everyone Someone mentioned Our Fair City on his essentials list (interesting how wide the variation is...), which got me to thinking. Anyone out there know which specific city is Our Fair City? Washington D.C. was my first guess because of its swampy location (isn't the Washington Monument sinking a few inches per decade or something?) and close proximity to northern VA, but consider the bridge: "Napoleon launched a real estate scam/ Put one over on T.J. when he sold him the land", which refers pretty clearly to the Louisiana Purchase. (Did this already get > tossed out to the list, I don't remember, MORE JOE PLEASE!) I'd have to sift through my CD collection to give a better answer, but one that comes immediately to mind is "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." Robbie mentioned on the cruise that Gordon Lightfoot was one of his influences, at which I mentioned to him that he has the perfect voice for covering this song, though not, as many people pointed out, on a boat in the middle of the ocean. I know the song isn't in the usual EFO vein, but I think they'd do it justice. Oh, and I have to agree about "Amazing Grace" - I can almost hear them singing it now. I know what I think it is, considering how often they play it and how often it showed up on people's top ten lists, but I would be interested to know if other people's opinions vary based on how long they've been fans or any other factor. I wonder what the band considers their signature song - anyone know? Shawn McCausland ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2000 09:24:34 -0500 From: Thomas Ehrhardt Subject: Signature song? This is an easy one Folks...that would have to be "Farmer Brown" Why you ask? it really sums up what the band is all about..awesome harmonies, interesting folk storyesque lyrics, all of the great voices in the band are showcased in a little under 4 minutes...Wowser... + the Joe Dance! 2nd Every show I have been to it has been played! :) I'd feel sorry for someone that went to a show and didn't hear it...it get's a long standing "O" here in Atlanta...I feel not playing it would be akin to Springsteen not doing "Born to run" a real tragedy...
