(long) [Nicole Carlson Subject: EFO: Groovin' to the Ohio beat! (long) Vote update: Davis, CA; my designated spot was almost empty when I voted at 10 AM. I was only voter #111. On the other hand, the voting place I passed on the way home was hopping with activity. Go figure... Now for some thoughts on this weekend's EFO shows. All five of them. Perhaps you think me crazy. But, as someone on this list already mentioned, you'd be crazy to *miss* shows on this tour. I came away from this tour more impressed than ever--the new material is great (I'm especially fond of "#6 Driver"), and the Kuumbwa show and the late Berkeley show were easily among the best I've seen. Seth and Ron mentioned the addition of the drum set; personally, I really like it. "Hail Mary Shy Of Redemption"--played a LOT this weekend, and I'd never heard it live before--turned into the butt-kicking rocker it always wanted to be. "Atlantic" now has Robbie doing intricate counterpoint on a second acoustic guitar and Eddie doing some understated, spare percussion. And "Minnesota 1945" sounds great with that big bass drum. I'll admit to liking "3 Fine Daughters" better on hand percussion only, though. Whatever I think, Eddie seems to be having an absolute blast with it. Sunday night, he got a standing ovation for his drum solo. Friday night: Santa Monica Brendan and I, having recruited each other as Travel Buddies, left Sacramento around noon and got to McCabe's just before doors. McCabe's is a great room. I really like the it's-a-music-store-AND-a-concert-venue thing, a nonobvious but good idea in a "Tastes great! Less filling!" kind of way, and I suspect the band did, too; they made a comment about the joys of "shoplifting" an item or two to play onstage. :) It did, however, have its drawbacks; a drunken attendee at the late show spent much of that show commenting very loudly on the attractiveness of the electric guitars on the wall. Unfortunately, we didn't stick around long after the show (we wanted to get back on the road before we collapsed); a great pity, since I'd wanted to meet the SoCal fans. Hope you guys had fun... but it sounds like you did. Saturday night: Santa Cruz Old Dominion One Gravity Not Enough Gold In The World Atlantic Bleeker To Broadway Monotony 3 Fine Daughters Hail Mary Shy Of Redemption Irish Dream Oh My Brother #6 Driver (not on the setlist, but they did the Eddie Campaign Song here, to the tune of "Hail To The Chief") Djembe solo->29 Ways Eddie's Concubine Operator - -- Stupid American Jerusalem OK, Gunnar Madsen (the opener) was pretty freaking weird, even for me. EFO's set, as I mentioned, was wonderful--amazingly energetic, and with a great setlist (see above). You'll all be pleased to know that they've come up with a categorization for themselves: "Folk fusion". (Personally, I still like "psycho-folk".) Also, they mentioned eating at that mainstay of California fast food, In 'N Out, which served as the basis for a number of scatological puns. After the show, I met up with a few other Edheads--Matt, Bruce, the brothers Angwin--not to mention the band, nearly all of whom took the time to tell me how wonderful the cruise was and how much I'd have enjoyed it. I need hardly tell you how hard they had to twist my arm to extract a promise to go on the next one. :) Sunday night: Berkeley Got stuck in traffic on 880 ( sports fans...), and got to the Freight just as EFO were about to go on. It was a sort of deja-vu moment: I arrived late to my very first EFO concert (which was at the Freight) because of traffic on 880. The early show wasn't sold out. The seat closest to the merch table was even free, as if it were waiting for me. This made me happy. EFO came out and turned out a relaxed, casual set. Band assurances to the contrary, I wasn't smart enough to figure out that getting behind the merch table and setting up the merch *before* the throng descended would probably be a good idea, so if I elbowed you aside or seemed flustered, I'm sorry. (But give me a break--I hadn't sold in almost a year!) The late show WAS sold out, and it was PACKED. And it was an AMAZING show. I have no idea how they do that. It was the end of a whirlwind tour, they'd already performed that day, but they summoned enough energy from who-knows-where ("Caffeine," said Robbie) to wow the crowd. Just incredible. So there you have it. Now it's back to the old grind for me ("Monotony", anyone?), and NOW what the heck do I have to look forward to, huh? Thanks and howdy to everyone I saw this weekend! - --nicole twn *** "Computer Science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes."--E.W. I have decided to take all the credit for it, as this is the fist election I have ever been involved in. But I handed out sample Democratic ballots for four hours today (GO GOVERNMENT SERVICE HOURS) and a ton of people came through. I wish that I could have actually voted, but I suppose I will have to wait 4 years to reelect Gore. (I HOPE I HOPE I HOPE!!!) Hope you all had fun fufilling your democratic duty. Can you imagine that FLORIDA is too close to call. That is craziness. I am glued to CNN....maybe thats why Marie is my only friend.
