Sorry! The McCabes shows were broadcast on the internet on Friday. At some point, the cell phone of the sound man could be heard ringing. Later Robbie read a message written either on an envelope or a napkin. The message was that DaVinci's Notebook (whom Robbie referred to as "our friends," were watching the webcast from somewhere in the East and had called in on the cell phone to say hello. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Nov 2000 12:33:55 -0800 (PST) From: Kyla Subject: Kuumbwa show review Hi! This was my first EFO show and it was a lot of fun! I went with my dad, as none of my friends appreciate this kind of music (they all go for radio stuff). I also met two very cool chicas there, I don't know their names, but one of them was wearing a Moxy Fruvous shirt. So hi to you two, if you read this! The opener was Gunnar Madsen, he was *quite* unusual. Interesting, but very odd. Talented, too. Anyways. EFO came on after a ten minute break, I think. They opened with Old Dominion, which they later said was a request from the announcer guy, who had just had a birthday earlier in the week. I can't remember the order of the rest of the songs, so I'll just say stuff about them. Irish Dream- for all the Irish in the crowd, supposedly more than there were in Boston. Accentuated by an Irish-dancing attempt by Julie and Mike. Stupid American- I think the intro to this was about Mike's trip to England, where he woke up one morning to the radio alarm DJs talking about why they hate Americans, and they weren't joking =) Eddie's Concubine- with an explanation that this song was NOT about Eddie Hartness, but another guy of the same "nomenclature" (Mike's favourite word of the night). Mike also did some sort of monkey-dance thing in this one. Bleecker to Broadway- one of my favourites, about "giving New York the finger back" Number 6 Driver- new song about when the band decided to drive straight from Colorado to Virginia, when Robbie had the first 3:00 in the morning shift, and he wanted a cup of coffee, so he stopped at a little store, where the employees threw him a party because the sixth customer that night got a free cup of coffee, and he was the sixth customer. Hail Mary Shy of Redemption- Julie appeared to be havin a lot of fun singing this one. Atlantic Monotony- a new song, by Mike. "Julie on los huevos de shake-shake, Eduardo Hartness on el guelo(sp?), and Robbie, straight from wood shop, on two sticks of wood." Everyone but Mike kept a straight face until the very end of the song. Can't wait to hear this one on the new CD! Three Fine Daughters- introduced as being a song that Mike wrote as his children's music persona, "Boner" (lots of jokes about that, too) Oh My Brother- wow, this is a beautiful song. Completely blew me away. Not Enough Gold- I LOVE a cappella songs! This was a lot of fun. Operator- they looked like they were having a lot of fun in this one. Gravity- they joked about this being a theme song for something... Jerusalem- closed with this one, as the final encore, Robbie said that every since he wrote it, he'd been waiting for it to become irrevelant. I think my dad really liked this one. I have this feeling he's going to be stealing my irodefidohome soon. There was a very nifty Eddie-solo. His arms move really fast! He is now nominated for president- he doesn't have a health plan, but Edheads get tax exemptions. They did the Eddie-for-President song on KPIG this morning, too. After one of the songs, I'm not sure which, Mike said that that song showed that Julie had a lot of "intestinal fortitude," which I thought was pretty funny because last year at a band competition the sight-reading judge spent ten minutes telling us about intestinal fortitude and how necessary it was to performing. My dad didn't understand why I was laughing at that =) Some people in the audience demonstrated the dance that Julie's dad had created to one of the songs (I forget which... I need a better memory!) and EFO talked about the variations of the dance they have seen all over the US, including some guy dropping his pants. A very cool show. I bought Fishbowl, Portable, Irodefidohome, and juggler. They all signed Juggler for me, Julie also wrote "Slainke!" or maybe "Slainte!" Does anyone know what that means? My dad commented on the way home how nice it is that I like bands that are made up of intelligent, talented people, instead of Britney Spears and stuff like that. This way, he can come with me to all the shows and enjoy them! They were also on KPIG this morning, which I actually woke up to listen to- scared my parents, I don't normalley get up before noon on weekends =) They did Walkin' In Jerusalem, Old Dominion, Operator, Number 6 Driver, and Johnseed (background music while the DJ talked to the sponsors of the program, a seed store. It's going to be their next big radio hit. They wouldn't let the DJ ask them how they got their name, though. Unfortunately, I can't make it up to Berkeley tonight, so everyone who is going, have an absolutely wonderful time! I need a better memory!) and EFO talked That dance would be the "Joe" and it's done during the 'a cappella' section of "Three Fine Daughters of Farmer Brown". If demonstrated properly, the "Joe" dancer should have arms out to the sides with hands (in fist) moving up and down in an opposing "piston" motion (one arm stretched up above head - one down - switch - repeat to rhthym of song). > about the variations of the dance they have seen all over the US, > including some guy dropping his pants. > > A very cool show.  I bought Fishbowl, Portable, Irodefidohome, and > juggler. They all signed Juggler for me, Julie also wrote "Slainke!" or > maybe "Slainte!"  Does anyone know what that means?  My dad commented If you tell me we'll both know. I got my cruise t-shirt signed and Julie signed it with her name and a smiley. However, my wife got the "slainte" (I believe with the "Julie" and a smiley). Niether one of us knew what it meant. > on the way home how nice it is that I like bands that are made up of > intelligent, talented people, instead of Britney Spears and stuff like > that.  This way, he can come with me to all the shows and enjoy them!   > > They were also on KPIG this morning, which I actually woke up to listen > to- scared my parents, I don't normalley get up before noon on weekends > =)  They did Walkin' In Jerusalem, Old Dominion, Operator, Number 6 > Driver, and Johnseed (background music while the DJ talked to the > sponsors of the program, a seed store.  It's going to be their next big > radio hit.  They wouldn't let the DJ ask them how they got their name, > though.   > > Unfortunately, I can't make it up to Berkeley tonight, so everyone who > is going, have an absolutely wonderful time!  Freight and Salvage is a > cool place! > --Kyla, surprised at how much she wrote here > > ===== > "What are we for if not for this?" > --The Nields, "I'll Meet You In The Sky" > > __________________________________________________ > Do You Yahoo!? > Thousands of Stores.  Millions of Products.  All in one Place. > http://shopping.yahoo.com/ > ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 05 Nov 2000 14:56:23 -0800 From: matt vanderzalm Subject: Re: Kuumbwa show review more thoughts ... first off, this was a remarkable show. maybe it's just that i haven't seen the band since before liam, but this was one of the best shows i've seen them do. it wasn't a marathon show, but it was really high energy fun. maybe it was the room, or maybe it was the fact that eddie is using the drum kit more and more, but the songs seemed tighter and more full than ever. even songs that i've seen a dozen times, like "oh, my brother" were absolutely captivating. second, eddie continues to amaze me. it seems that whenever i get to the point where i'm only "appreciating" what he does, knowing that i've seen him do it again and again before, he does something that once again makes my jaw drop. it was like that the first time i saw him with the djembe or the first time i saw him add robbie's guitar to his percussion solo in "the bridge." this time, he went off for what must have been 7 to 10 minutes, starting with the percussion kit, then gradually shifting to djembe and conga, then adding hi-hat and bass from the drum kit, then grabbing a drumstick and playing the full kit and djembe, then grabbing the second stick and playing a full solo on just the kit. it was seamless, and it was spectacular. the band eventually came in with a funky rendition of "29 ways." third, the new songs, "number 6 driver" and "monotony" were very polished. i've been awfully jealous of the east coast folk who have heard these songs a couple of times already. they were worth the wait. i can't wait to hear what they do in the studio with them. finally, slainte is gaelic, and translates roughly as "to your health." it's a common irish toast. someone once told me that you pronounce it as if you are quickly slurring the words "it's a lawn chair." my apologies to any gaelic scholars reading this. more to report after the berkeley show tonight, perhaps. - -matt ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V3 #164 *****************************
