I needed to pick up a Cheryl Wheeler ticket and I had a Ellis Paul ticket on order that I needed to pick up because I need to sell it. I got to McCabes at 5:45 and went up to the counter and asked for my Ellis Paul ticket and a Cheryl Wheeler ticket. I saw a young lady browsing the books near the counter whom I thought was Julie Wells Murphy, but I wasn't sure. I was aware that if it was Julie, she might wonder why I'm not buying EFO tickets. She did not know I had tix for the 8:00 and 10:00 shows already. After I got my other tickets I went up to her and asked if she was Julie and she said "Yes" and I told her I loved her and her voice and the band and that I was coming to both shows. She said, "I was wondering because you got all those other tickets!" We chatted a few minutes. I told her about being on this list and she asked my name. A few minutes later, I went over to look at the bass books, and there were Mike and Robbie looking at books. I went up to them and told them I loved them and they asked my name. Mike said my name was familiar and we chatted about this list and I mostly continued to chat with Robbie about his musical influences ("Paul Simon was a god." "I started listening to James Taylor because my friends liked him" "We liked Kiss when we were in high school."). Robbie told me about the time EFO and Susan Werner were erroneously booked at the same club for the same night in Santa Barbara and ended up doing a show together. We talked about the economics of a three-city California trip, and where they usually stay. While we were chatting, Julie came up and said, "I see you met Ron Rosen." I told them they were right up there in my pantheon of favorite performers, and Mike said, "Thanks. Now I'll have to go look up pantheon." I said, "It's that thing behind the toilet." He seemed to enjoy that. Later I asked Robbie if the medly of "Turn on Your Love Light" and "Know You Rider" was inspired by the Grateful Dead who were known to do both songs, and he acknowledged that it was. Anyway, my plan had been to pick up my tickets, then go get a snack and get in line for the 8:00 show. The store closes around 6:00 and then they convert the back guitar showroom into a concert hall. I recognized a fellow named Paul Barr who I see at virtually every McCabes show I go to. We chatted and he said that he was there early to set up his DAT recorder and plug into the sound board. While we were chatting one of the employees politely suggested that it was time for us to leave, but the manager, Zack, said, "They're cool." This meant, that, although I had no reason to be there, I was not kicked out and got to hang out and watch the showroom being converted to a venue. Robbie was doing a sound check and soon the whole band was onstage doing a three-song sound check. So, I never left McCabes from 5:45 to 11:45. The two shows were excellent. I didn't keep a set list. Mostly songs from Fishbowl with others thrown in to make the sets somewhat different from each other. They did Lyle Lovett's "If I had a boat" during the second show. As expected, the banter, especially from Mike was very fun. I also got to say hello to list member Seth Hornstein. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Nov 2000 08:19:23 -0800 From: "Ron Rosen" Subject: McCabes ticket for Ellis Paul (11/11) available If you are in or near the LA area and want/need a ticket for Ellis Paul, Nov. 11, at McCabes in Santa Monica, please contact me.
