I reluctantly work part time at a preschool (because there is so much more money to be made in preschool than in public radio which is my other "job") and today a woman came in to sing with the kiddies. She played this song about making sounds like a train and it sounded SO much like EFO that it was scary. So my weird question, has EFO ever put out a kiddie tape? I think it would be really funny if it was EFO but I'm really thinking it isn't. But it sure sounded like three guys and a girl singing and the harmonies were of the EFO variety. Weird stuff, I know. Maybe I was hallucinating. I did have to spend some time around bleach this morning. Anyhooo... katie http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~stohlman/ ps - I'm getting super excited for that EFO show at the Freight and Salvage in 2 weeks. I'm trying very hard to drag a friend. yay! i didn't chime in with the roll call last week, but you can add my wife, pam, and me to the list of bay area edheads. i've been a fan for five or six years. i used to see the band fairly regularly at trax or the prism coffeehouse when i was at school in charlottesville. since graduation, i've done nothing but move further and further away. i spent the last four years in st. louis, and now we're living in berkeley. fortunately, the band keeps finding us. i thought it would be the end once we got out of the range of harvey, and now they're playing a few blocks away. i'm fairly new to berkeley. what's the lowdown on freight and salvage? should we get tickets in advance? how early should we show to get decent seats? is freight and salvage taping friendly? speaking of which, is anyone planning to tape the show? we're contemplating whether or not to bring the ol' analog deck out of retirement, but if anyone else will be taping digitally, we won't bother. aside from the nomad jukebox on the cruise, i haven't heard much taping talk on the list lately. with one of the coolest, nicest soundguys in the biz running the board, i would imagine that there are some good seeds floating out there somewhere. with the right show and enough interest, i'd be happy to admin a tree. it's been a while. peace and spoons, matt ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 00:04:57 -0700 (PDT) From: Nicole Carlson Subject: EFO: Re: demographics and the berkeley show On Mon, 23 Oct 2000, matt vanderzalm wrote: > i didn't chime in with the roll call last week, but you can add my wife, > pam, and me to the list of bay area edheads. i've been a fan for five or > six years. Yes, really early, and yes. EFO have sold out the Freight *in* *advance* for at least the past two or three tours. DEFINITELY get your tickets in advance, or you will weep most dolefully on concert night. I personally plan to arrive an hour or so before doors--this didn't use to be necessary, but last time, the line was around the corner by half an hour before opening. (Word to the wise--check the weather forecast and bring a brolly if they say rain. *shivers at the memory*) (Second word to the wise--it can be tricky to find the Freight if you've never been there, so plan driving time accordingly.) The Freight's quite taping friendly, so bring the gear along! (And spin me a copy! :) See ya there! - --nicole twn *** "I disagree with the idiots."--CS professor, on gracefully handling an opposing opinion Visit Nicolopolis! http://wwwcsif.cs.ucdavis.edu/~carlsonn nmcarlson@ucdavis.edu ana.ng@tmbg.org carlsonn@seclab.cs.ucdavis.edu ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 10:18:34 -0700 From: Jeff Angwin Subject: Re: demographics and the berkeley show HI all: I've been going to the F&S shows in Berkeley since EFO started playing there. It's a fantastic venue, acoustics are great and every seat is a winner. You really should get your tickets in advance... you can get them online at ticketweb, or if you are close to the F&S, save yourself $3.00 and pick them up there. The last EFO shows at the F&S have sold out, but usually people have arrived after the doors have opened. The show starts at 8:00 and the doors open at 7:30. I've always arrived at around 7:00 and have been in the first 5 or so in. Taping at the Freight is a breeze, however, there is very little room for equipment. I've had to stack my equipment on top of the house CD player. So if too many people want to tape, it could get crowded. Bring power extension cords and long audio cables... and RCA splitters are a good idea to tap into the line if there are more than one taper. Also, I must say, that Bob is a great help to us tapers, as I'm sure most everyone will attest to. That said, I will be "taping" both the Berkeley and Santa Cruz shows to MD disc, and am always willing to trade, or make CD's for folks for the cost of blanks and postage (that is, if I get a high quality product ... technically that is... artistically it is ALWAYS high quality :-) ) I hope that helps... Look at this, EFO comes to California and all of a sudden all of us west-coasters start getting excited and discussing technicalities on the listserv. Ok, I must admit, I am not a native left-coast EFO listener (even though I AM a native left-coaster). I discovered EFO while I was in college at Virginia Tech (go Hokies!) and have recently moved from Blacksburg, VA to Los Angeles, CA (still getting used to the culture shock!) So the upcoming show at McCabe's will be my first time ever seeing EFO off the east coast. I can't wait!! (although I have my doubts that anything can ever beat a Bad Habit's or South Main Cafe show for excitement!!) Anyway, what are people's feelings about McCabe's? Do tickets sell out? What are the taping facilities like? Anybody know which output's the sound board has? Any other info I should know? TIA. Seth In other news, I saw David Wilcox last week at the Roxy in West Hollywood. Not too large and not too small. Does EFO ever play there? It had good points and bad points (the venue that is...the show was awesome!) I did notice though was that the sound booth was way up in a balcony so boardtaping would be a bit hard. Also, there kitchen was quite slow and the people that ordered the meals didn't get them until after David started playing. That was a bit distracting. So, I guess I'll have to wait until after I see McCabe's to make a judgement on which one is a better venue for this type of music. - -------------------------------------- Seth Hornstein seth@astro.ucla.edu UCLA Department of Physics & Astronomy __o _o /\o_ _ \<,_ //\_ ^^^^^^^^ (_)/ (_) _/\ / ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 14:10:07 -0700 From: "John McIntyre" Subject: Re: I wish they all could be California... Hey Seth! I caught their first McCabe's show. I'd recommend going early--if you haven't been, though it's a local legend, it's a tiny, funky place and the lines out front are typically long, devoted and friendly. Like at all EFO-away-from-home-terrain shows, the crowd is highly conversational, quick to unholster their "how I came to be here" stories and past EFO experiences, and to unbridle their enthusiasm in telling the live-show newbies how much they'll love the show... Have a great time and report--the NorCal contingent wants to know... Cheers-- - --John >>> Seth Hornstein 10/24 12:19 PM >>> ...shows!
