My wife and I hooked up with the South Main crowd at Friday night's cocktail party (shout out to Michelle, Eric, Jen, Slow Lane, John, Susan, Mary, and Chuck!) and just had a great time getting to know some fellow Edheads. Saturday we all (separately) did the touristy shopping thing in Nassau and did our various beach/snorkeling trips - mine didn't get back until the first set of the EFO show was almost over, and we ran in just as they were finishing "Observation", which had been my request. *Sigh* Anyway, the second set was even longer, and a whole bunch of us got up and danced pretty much the whole time (except the ballads), which I'm guessing is what the people in the dining room below us heard. The band told us they loved the fact that we did that - it's something you don't see at the Birchmere, that's for sure. After much hounding all night long Mike did a verse of "Preposition" during the "I Know You Rider" medley, and they threw in a couple of other things as well. Awesome, great show. Sunday morning's Q&A was really cool - we had a lot of great questions and I for one really felt that I got to know the band a lot better. They signed T-shirts afterward, we signed theirs, and we all dispersed, only to find ourselves all migrating to the back deck to sun ourselves during the course of the afternoon, including all four band members and their families. That kind of evolved into a lot of informal conversations as they/we wandered around, and that's what I thought was the coolest because, as someone who really didn't know them personally before (and there were a lot of folks on the cruise who did), it was nice to get past being starstruck and just talk to them about the cruise and NoVa and whether they preferred cookies, cake, pie, or ice cream (long story). The early booking gift was EFO unplugged in this teeny little room where I ended up sitting literally two feet away from Mike. After the bar staff finally figured out not to run the crushed ice machine or the cash register - they got some sharp looks from the band for that - we settled down to a great set of fast and slow songs, accompanied by Liam in the back. It was the most moved I've ever been by an EFO performance, and that's saying a lot. Late that night we all gathered in the central atrium of the ship for a group photo - it felt for all the world like the last night at camp. Everyone was wearing their EFO cruise T-shirts, and we did a lot of group singing which had a lot of the other cruisers coming in to take a look. All in all, a great experience. Although I've already done it in person, just another thanks to the band for opening themselves up and being willing to share their vacation, families, and musical ability with us up close. They're talking about doing something similar in the future - maybe another cruise, perhaps a ski trip, etc. - so keep an ear out. And I don't know about the rest of you who went, but I must have been on that boat too long, because my house feels like it's rocking on the waves! An Outdoor Festival or an indoor event at a former Historic Baptist Church tabernacle? Would you attend a Folk art festival with works based on some of the forementioned groups songs? Would you like the bands to be in attendance at this pre-show event? Silent auction of some of the works to benefit various band supported causes? A 2-day or 1-day event? That's enough for now...be aware your answers will be considered for an actual event that is in the planning stages..so please be honest in your answers....as it would help a great deal in what we will eventually provide. Make it on a Saturday, and I'm THERE! But good luck getting moxy below DC... they just don't tour down here. Also, they're on a touring haitus right now...although some lovely fru-head on the list can probably tell us when that will be over. And we all know how I feel about The Nields and EFO! No two bands could rock more (and if you add the kennedys, you've got my three favourite bands!). Now, about the cruise! It sounds like it was such a blast!!! I'm sad to have missed the fun. Maybe the next time... Hey, i think a ski trip is a good idea! Or anything that could be just as much fun, but a little less costly and little closer (because plane fair to florida is where the expense would've probably been for me this time). Would some fan or two out there please describe them to me, i.e., male/female make-up, kinds of instruments, type of music (I'm assuming folk), etc.? I'd love to pick up a new CD, and I'm thinking that one of these two bands should get my dollar, since so many edheads love them. Please respond to me personally, so as not to clutter the list with non-EFO content. Thanks.
