Actually the story of the Three Fine Daughters of Farmer Brown derives from a book entitled "Ghosts: Washington's Most Famous Ghost Stories", (now out of print) that tells the ghost story behind the three sisters islands (really rock outcroppings from the floor of the Potomac River). Legend says that if you paddle your canoe through the rocks, you can hear the screams of the three women who drowned. Mike used this story for a basis of the song, but also twisted some lyrics like Fairfax County to Halifax County. I have canoed that section of the river and have yet to hear any screams, except from Capitol Hill. Don't know about any myths, however... > > >>> "Susan Cable" 10/12 11:41 AM >>> > In the Potomac here in D.C. - I am told - there exists the "Three Sisters Island(s). There is a local myth about them that has to do with warring Indian tribes. Three young women crossed the river to either retrieve their warrior/husbands' dead bodies or to avenge their deaths. They didn't make it across the river. The three islands are supposed to mark the spot where they drowned. > > Can anyone corroborate? > > >>> Thomas Ehrhardt 10/12 2:39 PM >>> > I was wondering if anyone knows the story behind the "farmer Brown" song? > > Has anyone heard any explanations at concerts about the songs origins.... > Did this tragic event really happen? OK, I think I'm the oldest one on the list whose checked in so far. I'm 52. I live in So. Pasadena, CA just four miles south of the Rose Bowl. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and was 18 in 1966. This means that I got to experience the SF music scene first hand. Saw all the great 60s bands at that great moment in music history. Also got to see the Beatles at Candlestick Park at their last concert ever in 1966. My favorite SF band then was Jefferson Airplane, who started out doing folk rock, with heavy folk and blues roots. When I saw EFO last year they reminded me of early Airplane. The EFO medley of I Know You Rider and Turn on your Lovelight I am sure is a tribute to the Grateful Dead, who did both songs, but as far as the Deadheads tell me, never as a medley. I discovered EFO because I'm a huge fan of Susan Werner and EFO was mentioned on Susan's Believer's List so I decided to check them out, and love them. I'm looking forward to seeing them at McCabe's in November. I am a lawyer, a swing dancer, and a rock and roll bass player. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Oct 2000 16:57:51 -0400 From: "Hovis, Lonnie" Subject: Who we are Interesting question, the responses are equally interesting ... I ain't the oldest, which is kinda nice I guess ;-) I'm a 36-year-old computer programmer type. I live in Leesburg, Virginia and work in Tyson's Corner. I'm a Taurus (that seemed necessary in this paragraph). I noticed quite a few of you were from Falls Church, but unfortunately alot of high school chicks, can't talk to you guys with the restraining order and all (um, that's just a joke, really).... I first heard EFO when I bought one of their CDs at a used CD store in the LOCAL BANDS dept. I always like to support local bands and local farmers ;-) I've seen them several times since then at Wolf Trap, Bad Habits, and at a few DC United games. They still have sang the best national anthem, they've done it a couple of times. I think I saw them at an HFStival once, but I was drunk, I may not have. My daughter "absolutely hated them" when we saw them at RFK, but she was lying to me (at that time in her life (9 or 10-ish), if you weren't The Cranberries, you sucked!). She's now a huge fan. The little wench stole my brick-colored Folkin' Excellent T-shirt, and I haven't been able to find a new one. She lives in Hickory (ok, Newton) NC, so Rhiannon, can you pick her up on the way to the next EFO show in NC - it'll have to be an underage show, she's only 14 (but she's cool) ;-) Heck, if I remember right, you aren't that much older. My other musical favorites lately are Queensryche (have been my favorite forever), Eminem, Joe Satriani, Corrosion of Conformity, Natalie Merchant, a few dead guys/bands like Triumph, Soundgarden, and Michael Hedges. Actually, my tastes are so varied it's hard to list favorites. I hate Top40 and cuntry, I like alot of the rest of it ;-) Thanx to this list, I now like Dar Williams too..... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Oct 2000 18:19:21 -0700 From: "Ron Rosen" Subject: Re: Who we are > Interesting question, the responses are equally interesting ... A guy I know from the Jefferson Airplane list was at the DMV in Tyson's Corner the other day and was standing in line right behind Newt Gingrich. My friend said, "What are registering a car here for? I thought you lived in Georgia." Newt replied, "We just found a place up here. We're movin' back."
