My name is Dave Read, and I live in Austin, TX. I got turned on to EFO in ~1993 by some people from the Indigo Girls mailing list. I started off by ordering copies of Juggler and Actually Not from Rainy Day Records in Atlanta, and have been listening intently ever since then. Last year saw a resurgence in my EFO interest, when I was delighted to discover that they had not, in fact, been dormant while I was out of touch with RDR. A random thought struck me one day, google pointed me to efohio.com, and I was ordering (from amazon, I think) the next minute. Anyway, I have managed to see EFO only once, in Albany, NY (long story) last ~February. I keep praying for a Texas tour, but so far no luck. Cheers, Dave ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 00:58:12 -0400 From: "Jason D. Triolo" Subject: Re: EFO: Demographics Haven't seen anyone cover this part of the country yet, so here goes... I'm Jason, been on this earth for 26+ revolutions, currently living in Port Richey, Florida, a small town on the Gulf of Mexico, just to the north of the Tampa/St. Petersburg area. It's an area full of lightning, bugs, humidity, and retirees (most of them snowbirds this time of year). It's a land where EFO is not live, only Memorex. I spent 10 years in Richmond, during which time I went to a bar in the West End, just to chat with friends, having never heard of EFO and not going with the intent to see them. But when I first heard them, it took no more than about 5 minutes, and I was hooked. Five years later, I'm still a big fan. As someone else in this group said, you can never get tired of the music. In my opinion, it just gets better! I own every CD (6 group, 2 Julie, 1 Robbie), which get frequent use in the CD player, plus a few live shows that I recorded during 1996 and 1997, using taping habits which may have been referenced in the liner notes on the "Portable" CD. Overboard? Maybe. But they sure sound great! I saw them 11 times in Central VA (from Richmond to Charlottesville) before I moved to Florida in 1997. I'm convinced that the only way I'll see them perform live again is to go back to VA to visit friends, making sure to plan the trip around one of their scheduled tour dates. Ironically, the last show I saw came on the same date that I married my wife, one year later. She has also become a devout EFO fan, but has not had the privilege of seeing a live show. I think we can all agree she'll be in for a real treat. When I'm not spending time with my wife or scanning the EFO gigs schedule for that elusive Florida tour date, I go to work. I've worked for "a large consumer electronics chain" for the last 7 years, the last 2 of which I've spent as a sales manager. By the way, is anyone keeping track of all the states that have been represented here so far? Would be interesting to see just how far and wide the EFO fan base has grown. No, not in the way you are all thinking!! Does anybody happen to remember the date that Robbie was at the Handlebar playing solo during the maternity leave? I think it was in April or May 2000. If it helps, his opening act was supposed to be Cheryl Wheeler but she couldn't make it to the show. TIA. I live in Falls Church, VA, and I am too a high-school student. I learned about EFO when a friend of mine (who BEGAN this durned survey thing.. next it's going to be one of those 40 question "What side of the bed do you sleep on?" etc. etc. surveys) dragged me to a concert that I claimed not to enjoy all that much, until I went to the next and the next and the next... So really I was a big liar. That's all! Marie ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 06:24:52 -0500 From: corbe001 Subject: RE: EFO: Demographics Hey. I thought I would de-lurk for this one. My name is Kim Corbett and I'm live in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. I'm a Junior/Senior at the University of Alabama majoring in Secondary Education (Language Arts). I've never seen the band (but that will change Dec. 7!!) but I have and love all the albums. I remembered seeing something in the Birmingham News a couple of years ago about the band coming to City Stages. I really liked the article and thought they sounded cool. The name was distinctive enough that I immediately knew who people were talking about on the Fruvous newsgroup....and if the two had fans in common I had to try this band out. Now my parents are listeners too. This list has got to be one of the most sporadic I've ever seen. Nothing for a month...then tons of posting! I like the more talkative mode. :-) Sorry this wasn't more exciting... I don't think well this early in the morning! Talk to you Dec. 8! I first saw the band in late 1993 or early 1994 (my memory is slipping this AM) at South Main Cafe in Blacksburg, VA (GO HOKIES!). I was a sophomore in vet school at the time, and I had a little garage band with some of my classmates. One of them kept ranting about EFO, so when they came to town I went to check them out - - I've been hooked ever since. BTW, if you find yourself in an untalented garage band, don't try to cover any EFO tunes... it's just depressing. I have since moved from Virginia to Colorado to Indiana and now North Carolina where I'm an immunology PhD student at NC State. I've seen the band in three different time zones now, and I've got to say that I enjoy the East coast shows the most. It's amazing how much the shows vary by venue. Shows in the midwest were great because everyone sits quietly and listens to the band, so you can really hear the music. Actually, the other people at those shows probably didn't enjoy the music as much as me, because I can't help but sing along, and while I may be untalented musically, I am rather loud. Sorry to those of you out there that I've annoyed. The polar opposite would be a South Main show (or whatever the place is called this week). You may not hear as well, but the energy and excitement in the room is mind-blowing. I know of nothing that compares to this. Plus, everybody is singing, so I don't tend to bother anybody (except once I was standing in front of Mike singing along to his part on Operator and I think I may have thrown him off). While I like both types of shows, I have to say the high energy ones are my favorite. Sorry for the long message, but once I get rolling it's hard to stop. Originially from Lunenburg County, VA, graudated in 1997 from William & Mary. Getting married in May to my high school sweetheart. I'm currently living in Morrisville, NC. I got introduced to EFO by my fiancee's best friend, who recommended that I check them out. I picked up Fishbowl from CDNow, and was hooked. I then picked up Actually Not, Portable EFO, Juggler, Big Noise, and Fido. I've only been to see them once - when they came to Carrboro earlier this year, but I'm going to be back when they return to the ArtsCenter in December. I've even got my dad hooked on them! That's all from City Hall. Back to you in the studio. - --Wade ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V3 #137 *****************************
