Good to see that the chat has begun again in earnest :) good to hear from you all again Rhiannon and all the regulars... I've noticed in the song list postings of current shows that "bookends" has disappeared from Efo Shows! booohoooohoooo :( I have yet to hear Juli sing that one live at any show I've ever been to... I love the version on "Portable"! and wonder why it isn't done anymore! *maybe band boredom or over-playing? *I have wanted to paint a version of that song for awhile, but can only come up with some Dorian Gray type thing with whispy white cloth and (2) people becoming one in the fabric... UUgghhh! I'm thinking of throwing my sketchbook in the fireplace! I got my first catalog cd from Efo a few weeks ago "actually not" and believe it or not, in my somewhat Indie music-professional opinion..boy have they gotten better... On "one" you can get the 1st bits of how good Robbie's going to become, he had a wonderful voice..but now it has mellowed and matured to something really special... Juli's voice is much improved from than too! Her voice "live" is really very strong not so on that cd... I'm a firm believer that Efo is at a point were all things are going to click..you'd really be crazy to miss them anywhere on the latest tour! They've never been better!! I'm reminded of the time just before 10,000 maniacs became Mtv darlings....big-time success may be something in the future they can't avoid! Tom, I hope you were not implying that you welcome a sort of mTV-like popularity for the group. Lord help us if mTV is in EFO's future! I'd hate to see EFO become a victim of their own success in that way. EFO has strived for the past decade to remain a perminant part of the local music setting. For all you OLD Verticle Horizon fans out there, who remember what it was like to not have to buy tickets to their shows from TICKET MASTER, you know what I'm talking about. PRAY with all your soul that EFO enjoys its growing success without the sacrificing what has been the very source of that success--personal, "grassroots," small theater-type folk. Jon in N. Mmmm. EFO on empty-v. Scary thought indeed. I know what the first video should be for, though... "Monotony." Anyhow. About their voices getting better over time. They have definitely matured, but they were great then too (i'm not implying that you said they weren't, though). I'm thinking of specifically "Imagine me" and that one really dramatic part of "three fine daughters". "Imagine me" is one of my favourite EFO songs, and for the record, it's GREAT to turn all the way up and sing to at the top of your lungs in the car...but only if no one is with you (unless you have a voice like julie's, which i do not). And that section of "three fine daughters" is to me, the best moment in musical history. I get a huge smile on my face, and chills, everytime i hear it. But yes, their voices have definitely changed a bit...and for the better... but luckily they can still belt out "imagine me" and *the* section of "three fine daughters" beautifully enough to make me grin! love and efo! - -rhiannon At 10:10 AM 10/9/00 EDT, you wrote: >Tom, > >I hope you were not implying that you welcome a sort of mTV-like popularity >for the group. I'm so glad I'm not the only Charlotte person on the EFO list. I just moved down here from Chapel Hill. Anyhow, I don't remember seeing you there, but I did see Mike point somebody out at the "gradually eroding" part of Old Dominion. I guess that was you. I was in the middle. I'm surprised that Julie or Robbie didn't slide down the stage into your lap. .... [For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, at Charlotte's Neighborhood Theater, in order to compensate for the high stage, they have slanted the stage downward towards the crowd. That is probably why Robbie didn't jump around in a circle, as he usually does, and probably why the group didn't do any big chorographical pieces like "Bookends" (note to Tom)]. I agree about Ziggy's. I wouldn't be surprised if EFO stopped going there in the next year, for the same reason they don't play the Frat scene anymore. I was introduced to EFO years ago when they played at Hampden-Sydney College. They don't play there anymore (dag-nabbit). It is a bit of a dilemma--I want to go see EFO and have the freedom to dance around like a drunk idiot, but at the same time, I want to be able to sit there and enjoy their music without the distractions of drunk idiots making noise. I guess I'm a hypocrit. As for my recommendation, and if juliemikeeddierobbie are reading this, check out the Duke Power Theater in Uptown. It might be a little too high-brow for folk music, but at least it is not in the hood, and the crowd will be a little more respectable. Jon in N.Carolina >RECOMMENDATION FOR THE GROUP: Please find a better place to play in >Charlotte!!!!! It had been a year since EFO came to the Neighborhood >Theater. Now I know why! I was talking to Robbie after the show, and he said that he figures that EFO has played more places in Charlotte than any other single city. He said they used to play awful bars and such. So given the choice, I'd say we should stick to the neighborhood theatre. It's definitely not my FAVOURITE place on earth, but the sound was good (especially for the slow songs), and the people weren't too drunk. My main problem is that they seats are too close to the stage which is too high. I don't understand why that front row is even there! - -rhiannon _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. I know where everyone's coming from..No I'm not in favor of an Mtv-darling type career for Efo...jeeez....I run an Indie Music Label!!!! But there exists a dicotomy in Efo-land...On one hand they are truly the Webster's definition of an Independant artist *releasing cd's on their own time-table, controlling their own web site and choosing band products (t-shirts etc.)..but on the other they are represented by one of the Best Folk-booking agencys in the Country with a good bit of mainstream artists on the roster...and cd's are distributed by a fairly mainstream company. Red Eye here in Atlanta. They already have a nationwide presence and tour extensively... I totally agree that they are wonderful people to know and to talk too *Since I'm newly Orphaned. :( I'd Kill to sit by a camp fire singing cumbaya with Mike Clem and the band...It'd be a riot!!!!... They do have a genuine interest in their fans and give a lot back through their music...whether or not our discovery stays a secret or should is beyond our control...my comments really are more about the diifuculty in trying to contain ones success and the eventuality of the world finding out...whether we want it to or not... I don't know if this has anything to do with the band's current conservativism in Charlotte, but it makes for a nice story! By the way--if anyone has a recording of this show, I'd love to get a copy. It was my birthday, and one I'd like to relive :) ann > I'm surprised that Julie or Robbie didn't slide down the stage into your lap. .... We want the world to know, but we want it to be our secret as well. We love it when people know who EFO is, but that's because they are *in* on our secret. We wish the band nothing but the best... but I think we're scared a bit. It's scary to think that they might someday not be able to talk to us after shows, no longer know us by name, no longer treat us as friends rather than just fans. If they get really super famous then it's not our secret anymore...the secret's out. The world knows about them, and nobody cares that we "knew them when." The day that our emails go unanswered and we have to buy tickets to sit in the back row of amphetheatre is pretty terrifying. But luckily we don't have to worry about that too much. EFO loves their fans, because we make what they do possible. It's still a pretty scary thought that this COULD change, even if we know it won't. I'm not just pulling this out of the air either... i've seen it happen. Dar Williams has gotten way big in the past couple of years. We didn't realize HOW big until her new album came out and was getting on best seller lists, and the tour for the new album is selling out bigger and bigger theatres. She used to know all her regular fans by name, and she still does an amazing job of this...but there are just SO many of them. But hopefully EFO will get all the fame they want and deserve, and still love us just the same!!! i hope this made sense! YAY EFO! - -rhiannon At 10:49 AM 10/9/00 -0400, you wrote: >They do have a genuine interest in their fans and give a lot back through >their music...whether or not our discovery stays a secret or should is >beyond our control...my comments really are more about the diifuculty in >trying to contain ones success and the eventuality of the world finding >out...whether we want it to or not... >Regards, TomE ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V3 #132 *****************************
