WOW. I am an EFO Virgin no longer, with the added bonus of seeing/hearing/experiencing opening act DaVinci's Notebook. First of all, I had the great pleasure of standing in line for an hour or so, waiting for the doors to open, with Paul Sabourin's aunt, who came in from Grand Rapids, MI, to see Paul (lead tenor for DVN) perform. She was a fountain of information - I daresay I heard some dark family secrets I may be able to use some day!! The Ark was pretty well sold out, and rumor had it there were Very Important Record Company Officials in attendance. I don't know if that rumor added to DVN's stage presence or not, never having heard them before, but they were HOT. They had the audience in the palms of their hands from the very first notes, after a short but sincere introduction by Robbie Schaefer himself, resplendent in a neon yellow bowling shirt. DVN's Set List: Kingdom in the Sky - rousing gospel-y number ("we will all drink from the fountain and go riding on Space Mountain when we reach that Magic Kingdom in the sky…") Liposuction - no explanation necessary Secret Asian Man ("…a Chinese Austin Powers on a mission from Chairman Mao…") Title of the Song - They're not a 'boy band' -they're a Man Band!! All the boy band ballads rolled into one DVN 'meta-ballad' - a dead-solid-perfect satirical statement on all those sappy N'SYNC etc. top-40 ballads, with "Storm" Constanza performing admirably as AJ (Backstreet Boys). Ally McBeal - music by Bob Dylan ('Like a Rolling Stone'), lyrics by Paul Sabourin - God, this is a funny song… Saggy Diaper Blues - The Rugrats meet KebMo, with each DVN member taking a verse. Mickey Mouse March (Theme Song from the "Mickey Mouse Club") - with mezzo basso excitus Bernie Muller-Thym on lead. I'm surprised they didn't do an encore (unless that's frowned upon for opening acts) for the audience was going nuts, they got an immediate standing-o. Then with little fanfare - Eddie From Ohio. EFO Set List: Old Dominion Loitering in the Lobby Woman of Faith Great Day Minnesota 1945 Monotony Three Fine Daughters of Farmer Brown Irish Dream Number Six Driver Gravity Stupid American Abraham This My Town 29 Ways Eddie's Concubine Operator Encore - Seven Bridges Road with DaVinci's Notebook Misc. Details: Robbie commented that since it had been 15 months since their last Ark appearance, they were concerned that no one would be there that night (yeah, right!!!). He also does a great Charo! Impersonation, by the way. And did you know that the '!' is actually officially part of Charo's name? Lots of joking around with 'Great Day' - on how it was odd to have gospel music performed by 2 Catholics, a Jew, and a Trekkie - 'Live long and prosper, Amen, and Oy'. Michael commented on how he was shy on stage (?) and so was practicing picturing the audience in their underwear (and a few thongs), and then intro'd the song as 'Great Thong', also joking 'I've Got a Wedgie for God'. 'Monotony', new song of Michael's with him singing lead - with a latin beat, and Julie on 'el huevo de shake shake' and Robbie on two pieces of wood from wood shop. A long embarrassing story was the intro to 'Gravity' involving the previous night's stay at the 'Buckeye Budget' motel in Bowling Green OH - where the sun could be 10 miles from earth and the fire-retardant curtains would still keep the sun out of the room. Mike told the story of Robbie, who, after a middle-of-the-night trip to the bathroom, was groping his way back to his bed in the dark, felt what he thought was the corner of the bed, and decided to do a Superman jump on to the mattress - only to discover the hard way that it was NOT his bed, and ended up on the floor. And the next morning, when questioned by Mike about it, was assured 'your secret is safe with me' - yeah, until the next live microphone comes along. When commenting on a couple of very pregnant Ark staffers, they said they looked like lower case letters - tonight's show brought to you by the letters 'b' and 'd', It was announced that EFO will be participating in the Ann Arbor Folk Festival in January, by the way. The nickname 'The Conganator' was voted down for Eddie in favor of 'Dr. Love'. '29 Ways' had a tremendous drum solo intro, with Eddie and all his amazing toys - he had the full drum kit, too, not just djembe and bongos. He broke at least one stick. Simply awesome. The Encore - 'Seven Bridges Road', done with the guys from DVN, was about as close to heaven on earth as you can get without actually dying. What a sound. A country song, 'for the little redneck in each of us'. Overall first-timer impressions from the front row: First of all, it was wonderful to be in the front row; only bad thing was, I could read the set list!! No matter how hard I tried to ignore it, there it was. (and a note to Jennifer, who was in a party of 8 ahead of me in line - hope I didn't trample you too badly in the mad rush up the stairs, and welcome to the list!). There were times when I thought the drums were drowning out the vocals, but that could have been where we were sitting, too. But it didn't happen when Eddie was just using the bongos/congas etc - only when he was sitting at the drums (sorry, I'm not a musician, don't know the proper lingo). The extra energy contained in the more lively songs was amazing - 'Eddie's Concubine' just ROCKED. And it was cool to yell 'EDDIE!!' at the top of our lungs. And I could just sit and watch/listen to Julie Murphy-Wells forever. What a voice. A big highlight for me personally was waiting near the back door after the show. I caught Julie just as she came out, and was able to talk to her and give her a 'looking out the fishbowl' card I had made. She was so sweet, and seemed to really like it. She also noticed my pin and said she had actually seen it online when I'd posted the picture of it, saying 'we really do read the posts, we just don't post ourselves'. I got a picture of her holding the card, and expressed my amazement again at the performance, and she ran back to the dressing room to put the card away before coming back out to join the crowd. Note to Paul Brown in Northern MI: I even printed out your e-mail and took it with me - and then totally forgot to say hi from the Flanders….. sorry! Just forgot, in all the excitement. And 6 CDs (2 DVN, 3 EFO, and 1 JulieMW) and $90 later I staggered down the stairs to the street, grinning and basking in the glow of a great night of music. Was anyone else there? Did I forget anything? Amen to that. . . I just moved to Cincinnati from NC and made the 3 hour drive to Bowling Green for the Black Swamp Festival show. It was a beautiful night made all the better by a fantastic EFO show with an excellent crowd made up of mostly new listeners. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
