I tend to think "Bonny Brook" is about a town/community not specifically a school or institution... "some pot with a wooden ladle, some with a silver spoon" probably deals with class division..you know upper and middle/lower class...I really think this song is a classic otherside of the tracks story about two people that never seem to cross paths but have every opportunity to do so... The lyric "the queen next door is more than a house away" supports this prior idea...I doubt that refers to physical fences but more like self-imposed divides between 2 people...Hasn't there been anyone you wished for from a far and never acted on your feelings for whatever reason? The daylight savings time angle pretty much refers to another constraint on relationships..losing an hour of your life doesn't really save you anything that is a simple truth...in an already hectic life it lessens the time for people to interact.... "supper bells at 5" can refer to school dinnners but I tend to think its more about harvest time and when workers on farms tend to chow down....In olden days women sometimes brought the fruits of the harvest to town while men worked the fields during the day...This would account for a man seeing a woman on her "way back from Bonny Brook" in the evening near sunset... I have become so fond of the song that I have painted what I think it is about...a picture of it is available to view at the Artcanyon.com website....just type in the name "bonny brook" in the search window it will come up... I truly love this song! and would welcome more discussions on efo lyrics! by the way I think Michael Clem is by far the best lyricist in the group! My personal favorite is "three fine daughters" I'd love to have a discussion on that song! I think it should be made into a movie what a great story that would make... *footnote Michael Clem had e-mailed me saying it was one of his favorites...He said everytime his son and he gets in the car he has to play it real loud and his lil boy sings it real loud too...He also said he has a real soft spot for it... and obviously a lot of other people do to! *but he has yet to give his take on the true meanings of the wonderful tune....*sadly this song is rarely ever performed live by the group...I wonder why? Take care edheads! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2000 10:44:11 EDT From: JRaimo007@aol.com Subject: Re: Bonny Brook In a message dated 8/24/2000 6:02:28 PM Eastern Daylight Time, ImSerius2@aol.com writes: << 'tell me Mrs. G is your girl's name with a C or a K'. >> Isn't Mrs Garrett the Boarding house mother from "The Facts Of Life".
