So, I was listening to _actually not_ and got to "imagine me". Now, I've always loved this song...julie sounds SO great in it. But it dawned on me, "rhiannon, you have no idea what this song is about. why don't you ask the efo list and see if they know!?" So after that scary conversation with myself, I have decided to do just that. Does anybody have any insight as to what "imagine me" is about? thanks! - -rhiannon - ----------------------------------------- "I don't know whether I believe in me But I still believe in my friends" -the nields! ------------- http://www.unca.edu/~rcrichar/index2.htm - ----------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2000 21:36:31 EDT From: ImSerius2@aol.com Subject: Not Just 'Imagine Me' Now that someone has bravely admitted they get what an EFO song is about, I'll step forward and admit the same confusion over the same song - and while we're at it, 'Bonny Brook', and who exactly is 'Jack Can't Cook' about, if anyone? The lyrics are often puzzling but the joy and rhythm and sheer brilliance of Julie's vocals more than compensate - you don't have a clue what you're listening to but you don't care!! I don't know what "Imagine Me" or "Bonnie Brook" are about either. As for "Jack Can't Cook", I have a feeling...well...the only reason I say so is 'cause I heard a reference to it in a news story, but I don't follow sports *at all* (Isn't that illegal....for a guy to not follow sports?...Anyway) I think it's about Jack Kent Cook stadium or something, but I have no clue beyond that. I can't figure out what Imagine Me's about either... thanks for asking! How about Revolution?? And did you guys all hear the story behind Boomerang?? THAT was interesting! Um, Simile? I'm lost on that one.. Also the "The door opens... She is calling, calling out his name. Just like a man he revs the engine. She wonders why he always leaves the same way. And if he ever came." whew! I confess. Most of their songs puzzle me, but I've just stopped caring. "Think about it! 'I am wood and steel... [1] I'm the music and the feeling and the reeling in your head...'" Someone else related this to Robbie, who gave an enigmatic reply: "It's not about a harmonica, but it is about music." (paraphrased again) Myself, I view it as a companion piece to "One"--both about seemingly great relationships that are in fact based on a sort of identity vampirism--but told from the inside rather than the outside. Asking "So what *IS* it???" is, IMHO, a sucker trap--the song isn't so much about answers as it is about the process of finding answers. I also think it's about the inherent limitations of language. What do you guys think--is "Bookends" about a healthy relationship or a relationship gone stale? - --nicole twn [1] For the *longest* time, I thought this line was "I wouldn't steal, would you take me in?". [2] Ask me about the time I was trying to study for an essay test on _Antony and Cleopatra_ [3] and discovered, to my dismay, that my notes on A&C consisted primarily of the lyrics to "Cleo and Tony". Fortunately, no one asked to borrow my notes. [3] Incidentally, if Shakespeare got it right, EFO got the Caesar wrong--it was Octavius, not Julius. I know--doesn't scan. :) *** "I'm crazy, but I get the job done."--Ben Folds Five Visit Nicolopolis! http://wwwcsif.cs.ucdavis.edu/~carlsonn nmcarlson@ucdavis.edu ana.ng@tmbg.org carlsonn@seclab.cs.ucdavis.edu ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V3 #98 ****************************
