The quote given below definitely corresponds to the song, but -- in the words of Inigo Montoya in "The Princess Bride" -- "I do not think that word means what you think it means." "That word" being "Pete." When I read the e-mail originally, I thought to myself that it could have meant a trade involving Pete Rose for cash, but I looked it up, and he changed teams three times. The first two were free agent acquisitions, and involved no direct exchange between the teams. The third time was very late in his career and it was a 1-for-1 trade involving a little known player. (Incidentally, that last trade was to send him back to Cincinnati so that he could assume the managerial duties, which eventually led to his lifetime ban.) Nicole's thought below that there was no cash involved in his lifetime ban is absolutely correct (at least as far as anything public). The ban was immediate and uncompensated. In fact, Pete even "agreed" to it. My thoughts now are that this is a reference to someone else entirely. It would most likely be a developer or something. "Hustling Pete" would be a shrewd businessman or politician who was paid off to approve some of the massive development described in the song. It's true that there are some baseball references in the song, but I don't think this is one of them. But in the words of Dennis Miller -- former SNL cast member, HBO host and new MNF analyst -- "That's just my opinion. I could be wrong." ------------------------------ Date: Mon Jun 26 15:02:35 2000 From: CBonfig1@aol.com Subject: Re: Song/Lyric Explanations I've heard Robbie discuss the song and the Pete Rose reference before. It does indeed refer to Pete (aka Charlie Hustle)fleeing the Reds for a big payday. Yes, he did it more than once and many many others have done it since, but I think that was a huge blow to Cioncinnati and baseball in general. It really signalled a new era. Thats what the reference pertains to. Chuck ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V3 #69 ****************************
