In the second verse of TMT, there's two lines that go: "They sent hustlin' Pete for a bundle of cash/ And called it an even trade." My best theory is that this refers to the banning of Pete Rose from baseball for gambling. It seems plausible, and it fits in with the song's repeated references to baseball. But the rest of the song is about *childhood* memories, and Rose was only banned about ten years ago, when Robbie would have been in his early twenties. (Plus, did they really pay Rose off? I thought they just told him to (metaphorically speaking) take his ball and go home, but then again I was young at the time.) So... am I reading too much into this? Can anyone else help me elucidate these puzzling lines? - --nicole twn *** "Don't worry; this will all make sense once you've dropped some acid." - --former computer science professor, on computer architecture Visit Nicolopolis! http://wwwcsif.cs.ucdavis.edu/~carlsonn nmcarlson@ucdavis.edu ana.ng@tmbg.org carlsonn@seclab.cs.ucdavis.edu ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 12:32:15 -0700 (PDT) From: mike s Subject: Re: EFO: This My Town Hey Nicole, This refers to Pete Rose when he was still playing.. I am not sure of the specifics, but Pete was once traded for money fromone team to another... i once heard Robbie speak on this prashe at a show and he made rererence to this incident being a loss off innocence type of situation, when Pete was traded. This does make it fit into the song perfectly. Hope this tid bit helps.. Mike.... p. ive been on this list about two years...about time i had something to say. - --- Nicole Carlson wrote: > Hi everyone > > I've been cleaning my room, and listening to several > CDs on "shuffle" > makes the job go faster. :) One of them is _I Rode > Fido Home_, and as > "This My Town" came up, a question that had been > nagging me for a while > suddenly came to the forefront. Which of course is one of the best things about live shows. Never having seen EFO live, I don't know, but I am hoping that they follow that pattern, and tell the stories....so, do they? It's hard to tell from 'Portable EFO Show' - there is banter there, but very little of the song-explanation-variety. I am working on a 'Looking Out the Fishbowl' pin to wear to the Sept. show at the Ark. Any other Edheads going to be there?
