I'll be figuring that when I get home today :) ===================== Wow. What a great show. The last time I saw EFO was last year's Herndon Festival in June, right after LOTFB was released. Since then, I've moved to Florida and have been in major withdrawal! First of all, DVN was a great opening act. The audience looked like it was going to be tough to win over, but DVN got them settled in very nicely. I loved "Title of the Song"... errr.. I mean "insert praise of the group's best song here" ;) Almost all of the EFO shows I had seen before were in bars -- South Main Cafe in Blacksburg and Bad Habits in "Arlandria," which don't necessarily lend themselves to slower songs. While EFO has a lot of songs that do very well in bar-type settings, they also have some slower ones that don't.... which is where the Variety Playhouse comes in. Unlike the bar venues, the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta gives the band a better atmosphere to play more slow-tempo songs like Bowling in the Hills. The VP is an old renovated theater [maybe someone on the list knows the history]. It is similar to The Lyric in Blacksburg, except the VP serves "beverages" and has tables set up in the front and on the sides. While everyone has to see the band in a place like South Main Cafe in Blacksburg or Bad Habits at least once in their life, the show in Atlanta was super... I discovered that EFO's live shows can be much more than what I had seen in the past, which was sets that did not have as many of the slower-tempo songs. In fact, Mike asked the playfully audience at one point "Who wants to hear a slow ballad?" to set up a song that certainly wasn't (Stupid American I think), and the crowd actually responded in the affirmative!!!! I don't remember the set list exactly, but they opened with Old Dominion (.....after living in Virginia for 23 years, I've often pondered these lyrics down here in Florida....) and closed with an incredible encore (more later). They also pulled out the new ones one right after another that I've heard about -- Monotony (funny song!), Great Day, Abraham/Water Is Wide, #6 Driver [I felt like this on my way BACK from Atlanta, but Saturday night definitely made the 9-hr drive worth it]. All of them were terrific songs - there was so much variety between the songs [ahhh...now I get it.... the VARIETY Playhouse!] and so many creative lyrics that continue to amaze me even after seeing so many shows and listening to their albums. The best thing about this show, however, was that the band certainly appears re-energized. [by the way, Robbie has lost a lot of weight and looks great - he was literally jumping all over the stage on any number that was up-tempo!!!] The final encore was simply AWESOME. DVN came back on stage and did 7 Bridges Road with EFO.... Can I just say that is the best performance I've ever heard of that song [even by the Eagles]? What an unbelievable encore... I just wish the Eagles had written more verses into that song so I could have heard more of DVN and EFO together! ;) And one final note... While I was not able to convince anyone from down here to come up (I am still working on this one... most were out of town this weekend), I did manage to convert the friend I stayed with on Saturday night. He loved the show! I hope everyone had a great weekend.... I know I certainly did. Kevin Kevin L. Like Kevin, unless EFO gets booked in the Deep South again this year, this may be my only time to see them this year. It was well worth the harrowing trip & all the hassle. First, I have to thank Soundman Bob! Thanks, Bob! OK, next I'd like to thank the Academy for this award (oh, wait, wrong crowd), ummm. Seriously, Bob-thanks for all your help! Like Kevin I saw DVN for the 1st time. If barbershop quartets were around today, they'd be like DaVinci's Notebook. This foursome has great pop vocals with high, tight harmonies. Their acapella humor is a good show to catch whereever you can. DVN really got the crowd into the show. They deserved their standing ovations (note the plurality, y'all!). For any DVN fans reading this, here is their setlist: Kingdom in the Sky Traffic Jam Liposuction Secret Asian Man Title of the Song Saggy Diaper Blues Three Little Words Ally McBeal What A Wonderful World (thanks Paul for providing the setlist! Hey Guys, Who kicks a**?) Each song was funny & very entertaining. The banter between songs was humorous, too. A good all-around show. The crowd got really excited when certain members of another band appearing later performed on some of DVN's songs. Speaking of Eddie From Ohio, Their show was awesome. They did perform all their new songs, but not quite all in a row. All the humor, harmony, & catchy melodies we love are back in full force. Every EFO virgin (& there were plenty there) became converts that night (Indeed, they kept the kind & lovely "Meesh" busy at the Merch Table - thanks Meesh!). Another correction I have to make is that Water Is Wide is not a new tune. Robbie's intro to it mentioned the fact that they sang it during the maternity leave while meeting Liam. That song just showed them how much they enjoy singing with each other. Water Is Wide is an old folk tune whose melody is an old hymn (I think maybe Martin Luther used it which puts it back at least to the 15th century). There is another set of lyrics to the tune (Across The Wide Missouri) which dates back to the early to mid 19th century. EFO continues the grand folk tradition of singing this song just like our early American pioneers, The Weavers, The Kingston Trio, and countless other folk artists throughout the 20th century. Its nice to see EFO tap their roots. Re-energized? Yes, Indeed! The whole show seemed to be filled with a new spirit and a renewed appreciation. It was one long set enjoyed by the band and the audience. They more than earned their several standing ovations. If you get the chance, go see them. Kevin & I both traveled long distances and felt it was worth every mile (believe me, if you knew the awful adventure I had just getting there, you would know I am not just saying this or waxing eloquent, trite praises). Here is the EFO Setlist: Old Dominion Loitering in the Lobby Woman of Faith Water is Wide Sahara Monotony Very Fine Funeral Great Day Number 6 Driver Bowling In The Hills Abraham Santa Margherita (with an interesting explanatory intro by Robbie) This My Town Eddie's Solo (really won the crowd over!) 29 Ways Back To My Baby's Arms (or something like that -- Don't know the official title to this one) Stupid American Cleo & Tony (in its old, pure form; not the Medley form) Eddie's Concubine - --encore-- 20,000 Hearts Yellow The Three Fine Daughters of Farmer Brown Seven Bridges Road (with DaVinci's Notebook) That should be plenty for now. Thanks again to all concerned for a great show. A good time was had by all. To The Point, Berkeley On Mon, 5 Jun 2000 10:23:04 -0400 "Kevin Wells" writes: > ===================== > Wow. Went to my local folk CD store today, and the only one they had in stock was 'Big Noise', so that's the one I went with! I have 'Portable EFO Show' and have always loved the long, wonderful harmonies they sing at the top of that CD - the words 'fear of falling', followed by their before-show patter. So it was fun to hear those words/harmonies in their original setting, in 'Gravity' - I had no clue! Have I mentioned how glad I am to have discovered this band?
