I'd like a copy of the solo show(s) as well. If anyone wants to trade, please contact me offline. Also, I'd still like to get a copy of the Edguy Image in jpeg or bmp form. If anyone has it, please contact me. Naturally, there are only legal intentions here. I only want to use it like the guy did when he burned the Handlebar shows with Michael Lille & Mark O'Conner. All legal intentions here folks so please contact me offline. I hate to get personal, but I remember that because first I noticed he wasn't wearing his wedding ring and then I heard this song from him all about regrets of lost chances with a child. Perhaps I'm trying to read too much into two little things. As Mike said in his closing on Saturday night: Happy Easter. Happy Passover and Live Long and Prosper! >>> Seth Hornstein 04/18 6:27 PM >>> Well, as possibly the only edhead (or is that ednoid??) that attended both shows I have a few comparisons/comments to make. Unfortunately, I must start by griping that the two shows were EXACTLY THE SAME!!! With the exception of Sahara and Woman of Faith being played the second night replacing Bones of a Lifetime (I think) and something else (I forget what ) they were the same shows. I was a little disappointed (this probably being my last time seeing them in their home state of Virginia or anywhere on the east coast for that matter) but quickly got over it. *Great Day (a seemingly perfect theme opener) was a new one that I had never heard live before. *One of the benefits of attending both shows was that Mike told a different part of the story of the origin of Monotony. Monotony, which by the way is an excellent song is, one of the two new unrecorded songs they played at the show. *The other new song they played was #6 Driver. As always I am amazed by Robbie's song writing talent. Not that it is any better or worse than Mike's but Robbie's songs always seem much deeper and majestic. That being said, I have to re-comment that I thought monotony was absolutely hilarious and both songs quickly jumped to my top ten favorites. *One comment on Operator. They added a new upbeat ending to the song. Just when you think it is over, eddie starts a fast beat on the drums and the band launches into "Give me Jesus" routine. The funniest thing about this medley is that it quite interesting to see Robbie's Star of David bouncing around as he plays the quick melody while his only lines are "Give Me Jesus!" Maybe I am overplaying this a bit, but I just found it quite humorous! *Set Two was just a great as the first with a few other surprises thrown in. Including Julie and Eddie leaving the stage to leave Mike and Robbie to sing Abraham. (Anyone know if this is a Mike original or a cover?) They then returned and then Robbie and Julie went straight into The Water is Wide...excellent! *Eddie's Drum solo: Both nights they had both his bongos set up and his regular drum set. And both nights his solo included him moving from one set to the other. I wonder if this is going to become a regular setup now that they are incorporating the regular drums into more of their songs... Or maybe a perk reserved only for the bigger stages they play on... *Then came the raffle/door prize that has already been discussed. What was being given away was two four-packs of tickets to the Fairfax folk festival (I don't remember the exact name but that was basically the idea.) The first night the tickets were taped underneath the chairs and the second night they were taped under the table right in front of the winning seats. The second set of tickets were never claimed on the second night so you never know, check underneath the table in front of you the next time you are at the Birchmere! :) *Finally, Irish Dream was definitely a great song to see live. *One thing is for certain, over the break Mike did not lose a bit of his comedic banter. I think he was better the second night than the first but both nights were quite entertaining. That being said the Doin' Time from the first night was quite possibly the best rendition of that song I have ever heard. And the second night jumps right up there in the rankings as the second funniest I have ever heard! well, that's about it. Just the facts. We all have a measure of knowledge about their personal lives, whether it be Robbie having another son, or Julie getting married, or pregnant or giving birth. We celebrate those events. We also feel for them when bad things happen, like when Eddie's father passed last year. I don't think any of us need to know the whys and hows of things that may have happened, but facts are facts. Regardless, I know all our sympathies would be with him. Theres my two cents. On the second night Mike even commented that the Birchmere people were saying how it was like an Amway meeting where everyone knew everyone. The setlists were good as Seth commented. I think the crowd was a bit better on Saturday. At least they seemed louder. One of the things I like best about efo is that you can tell that they really enjoy playing the music and singing the songs and these shows were no exception. I actually worried for the future of the band after the baby was born, but I have been reassuerd that they will keep going and going and going and going... They were having so much fun on stage. Mike had months of banter saved up and he was all over with it. At one point on Friday I remember it was like six or seven minutes of stories. I also noticed that someone had commented on Julie's voice being stronger. I wholeheartedly agree. I noticed the same thing after the break for Julie's wedding and after the break for the recording of Fishbowl. Her voice must get tired when they are touring every night. Her voice for these shows was very rich and full and strong. Although the crowd was better on Saturday night the band seemed a tiny bit more excited the first night perhaps a touch of stagefright? The first night Mike also had a really cool acoustic bass on stage (I think it was a Tacoma Mike?) that produced some strong feedback when he sang on Friday so I noticed that the bass was not back for Saturday night. As far as the new songs: Monotony - I find it kind of ironic that Mike wrote this one while on an extended break with the band. Julie and Robbie's parts in this are absolutely hilarious. Once again this one is classic Clem. #6 Driver - Another great one in the Robbie tradition. Medium tempo with his trademark hammer-ons and pull-offs. Great backstory, too. ...Virginia in My Eyes is my favorite line in this one. Mike's other new one Abraham was absolutely fantanstic. Great story excellent use of metaphor. Mike really hit home with this one. I had never heard Water is Wide before so that was great treat and Juile's voice really shined. Eddie did have the full kit (the Drumpire) in effect as Seth mentioned. I think he uses this primarily as geography dictates. If its a close gig he likes to bring it otherwise fagetaboutit. An interesting note on the setup of the kit. On Friday night Eddie was seated throughout the entire show. He even had the Congs and Bongos lowered so he could play everything sitting. At the end he did take the djembe off of the stand where it was in the kit and put on the usual strap so he could walk and play it. Eddie's transitions from the bongos and congas to the djembe and to the full kit were amazing. You had to see him playing the high hat and bass drum with the foot pedals and the djembe and congs with his hands. Awesome. Satuday night the bongos and congas were back to normal height with Eddie playing standing, but the djembe and regular drums had him sitting. I told Eddie that he ruins every had percussionist I have ever seen because of his talent. No one can even come close to comparing. I have seen him perform countless solos (none ever the same) and yet he can still keep time like a machine. It was great to hear Suite: Judy Blue Eyes again, too. I didn't think I would ever hear it again after the last Bad Habits. That song is funny. In the lobby outside of the Music Hall I passed soo many people humming or whistling this song it was amazing. A very catchy tune. See you at Fairfax Fair! Andy ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V3 #33 ****************************
