[Seth Hornstein ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2000 14:33:05 -0500 From: Andrew Bray Subject: Wolf Trap 01/27 (long) Eddie From Ohio The Barns of Wolf Trap Vienna, VA Thursday, January 27, 2000 I was one of the lucky ones who benefited from the reschedule and was able to get tix to Thursday's show and boy was it worth the "toll" as Mike said referring to the Dulles Toll Road (which is the easiest way to get to the Barns). Perhaps one of the best EFO shows I have ever seen. I know it sounds cliched to say the day after, but I just can't help myself. I absolutely loved the setlist. Seeing them recently has been sort of the "Fishbowl" tour, which has been good, (don't get me wrong I _love_ the new stuff) but this show was a great mix of the old and new rounded out with some great guests. First of all stage front and center was a huge easy chair for Julie complete with an end table complete with a lamp and vase of flowers and even a rug for her feet. She stands and belts out Old Dominion and then settles into the chair for most of the rest of the night. Great chair dancing Julie! They play a few more and Mike introduces John Carroll. John's played in studio with EFO and a bunch of other amazing artists, and has played at some pretty big events including the Super Bowl and the Grammies. John came out for Fruited Plain and played the rest of the evening on organ, accordion and a huge grand piano. Continents of Time was a great treat that I haven't seen in years. The arrangement with John leading the melody on the piano was very creative and Julie's voice sounded heavenly. Bonny Brook. This was the first time I had ever seen this one live and the arrangement was great. Pete Wilson (Gunnery Sergeant and great fiddle player) came in for his first number. Pete's violin and John's accordion really filled out the melody parts and the back and forth between Robbie's voice and Julie's voice is fun. Julie left the stage for the beginning of One and Robbie promptly sat in her chair claiming Julie hadn't called seatbacks, but he relented when she returned claiming he didn't want to face the wrath of a pregnant woman. Get Closer is a John Carroll original that was used in the toothpaste commercial. You know how it goes "You want love, Get Closer". The whole band really had fun with this one. You could really see what a pro John was by how he stepped right up to lead the band on that song. It really made you appreciate how well he was able to blend in on the other songs. Bookends had a very different arrangement with Robbie jamming with John and Mike staying on the bass. Robbie and John seemed to be having just the best time as if there wasn't even an audience there. Woman of Faith sounded awesome. The organ was one of the things I loved about the Fishbowl version and John faithfully reprises his organ play for the live version. You can't believe Pete Wilson's intro to Jerusalem. Just leveling. It was really long and at first I wasn't sure what they were going to play. It was sweet and powerful then toward the end when Julie sings " Our sons and our daughters will lay on your hills, etc." Bob worked a little magic on her mic and it sounded very ethereal. About halfway through the second set Julie suddenly had to leave the stage. Mike had their filler "Plan B" all in place. Check this out, complete with heavy metal light show, sung to the tune of Born To Be Wild: Should we call her husband? Is her water breaking? Should we get her doctor? Could it be she's faking? Now that she's in her 3rd trimester She's begun to feel her weight The fertility gods have blessed her and put her in a state Don't ya worry, she'll be right back She's a trooper, and that's a fact And if you're wonderin' why, we'll tell ya Its simply that - JULIE'S WITH CHIIILD! JULIE"S WITH CHIIILD! Then they played a little tribute to the late Curtis Mayfield buy singing a tune he penned called Its Alright. This was the a capella number for the evening. John filled in for certain parts and it sounded great. Eddie's solo for the night was on the sit down drum kit kit combined with the djembe. He was playing the two at the same time so seamlessly you can't even imagine. He never ceases to pull something completely new. The solo ran into a very full arrangement of Rolling Pin. That's a song they've really re-invented the last few times I have seen it. After a funky Mistress Snow John starts playing this long mellow piano solo that is just so perfect and it ends up being the intro to Oh My Brother. Pete was on violin and when it got to the part where it really builds up to the crescendo and the Music stops (And sing this song is no way to say good bye.....) it just blew people away. For their encore they played In Paradise (the last track from the Actually Not CD). This song is so powerful. And in all of my years seeing the band I had never seen it live. I think they had planned on playing another song, but after In Paradise they weren't too many dry eyes in the place and most people were too floored to clap. There was a long pause after the end of the song and before the applause exploded. Overall an awesome show with great guests. I think its a real tribute to the band and their musicianship when a couple of pros can sit in and play like they did. I also think its because of the songs being so fundamentally sound that these guys can play just like they're part of the band. Of course Eddie's always driving the bus with his rock solid tempos. I swear I have never seen him miss a beat. The whole band seemed to be having a blast. There were times when Julie would smile just as Pete or John was filling out a particular passage absolutely perfectly. There was great chemistry between all of the musicians. There were only a few tragedies for the night. First, that we won't have any shows for a while while everyone is on maternity leave, and secondly that the Barns doesn't allow taping so we have lost this show forever. It would have surely become one of the best tapes ever. See you at the shows, Andy P.S. - Here's the full setlist: Old Dominion Gravity Big Noise Simile Song Fruited Plain Loitering in the Lobby Continents of Time Bonny Brook One Get Closer Bookends Woman of Faith Fifth of July If I Had A Boat Jerusalem This My Town It's Alright Eddie drum solo -> Rolling Pin Mistress Snow and Mary Jane Green Oh My Brother Farmer Brown Train Song In Paradise ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2000 17:42:06 -0500 From: Seth Hornstein Subject: Where are all the uploads?? I have gotten numerous letters stating something to the extent of "I have a live show of EFO that I would love to put up on your site but unfortunately I am only on a modem connection so it would take too long...but keep up the good work!" My answer though is that without people to upload new shows, there will be no work to keep up! So the solution is simple, if you have a show that you want to upload but are restricted because of modem access, just upload a couple of songs a night and it won't take that long at all! In the upload directory, you have full write access which means you can just create a directory and upload songs at your leisure. With 1-3 songs a night, it will be complete in no time. Then you can just email me when it is done and I will move it out of the upload section. I have also put into the root directory a good, small program for pulling CD tracks off of a CD and converting them into MP3 format (cdcopy.exe). So now if you have a CD show that is not up, you have no excuse not to put it up there. :) Enjoy the site!
