Since I've never been there (it's eight friggin' hours away and EFO like to time their visits to coincide with my midterms), you can all imagine how much I enjoy those calls. :) My own thoughts on these shows (why? Because it's more fun than studying): Santa Cruz sold out by Thursday night. I was stunned--EFO, for some reason, have (until now) never drawn big crowds in Santa Cruz--and kinda bummed, mostly because some friends (one Edhead, two newbies) of mine couldn't get tickets. The Kuumbwa Jazz Center was PACKED. (Aisles? What aisles? It's a good thing the fire marshal wasn't there.) Lucy Kaplansky was quite good, even surprisingly so--I'd only heard her as 1/3 of Cry Cry Cry, a group that left me lukewarm at Falcon Ridge. The Lehrer-esque Song About Pi (written by her mathematician father, Irving Kaplansky) was a definite highlight; it also spurred several pi-related jokes during EFO's set. A great time was had by all, and EFO joked (?) about touring with Lucy--Robbie wanted to call it "Lucy From Ohio", and Mike suggested "Blah Blah Blah". One wonders where they'll play next tour. Kuumbwa again? It's a jazz/folk club and much better suited to EFO than rock club Palookaville was, but it's kinda small. Sunday afternoon I drove up to Berkeley and some of us (okay, only a few of us) met for pizza. We got to the Freight and joined the already long line just as it started raining.... fortunately, the venue staff took pity on us wet concertgoers and opened doors early. Lowen and Navarro, who opened, were quite good (*Very* tight harmonies. Nicole approves.), and I picked up one of their albums. EFO's set, aside from being eerily similar to their previous two nights' sets, was good and energetic. It was nice to hear Revolution, and there was this great moment after Eddie's Concubine when they decided to see what it would sound like reggae-style. I leave the results to everyone's fecund imagination, but trust me--it was hilarious. Jessica's already mentioned the train whistles, so I won't duplicate that information, except to say that 1) it was a lot of fun, and worth it just for the look on Eddie's face, and 2) maybe I'll finally get those things out of my car. They've been rolling around on my dashboard for a year now, waiting for their moment of glory, and everyone always asks me what they're for. It was great meeting so many of you! Sorry I didn't have more of a chance to chat. > like a little canister . Dos anyone know what happened to the Zucchini she > used at Henflings a couple years ago? And wasn't that a great concert moment? I can't decide whether I preferred the shaky zuchinni or Eddie's shaky figs. It was highly amusing to watch them wave produce around with expressions of rapt concentration. :) - --nicole twn who has waterproofed her best boots and purchased a travel umbrella and is therefore All Set for Seattle! I also just remembered an interesting event at the Berkeley show ... Robbie did a "folk" lap dance during (I believe) Eddie's Concubine to a virgin in the front row. A good time seemed to be had by all. And Robbie definitely has options in a second career if the band (heaven forbid) ever breaks up. We may be seeing him in the Showgirls sequel. - -Jess -----Original Message----- From: Nicole Carlson [mailto:nmcarlson@ucdavis.edu] Sent: Wednesday, November 17, 1999 11:14 AM To: edheads@efohio.com Subject: EFO:Re: The California Shows (mildly Long) On Mon, Nov 15, 1999 at 02:32:51PM -0800, Jessica Brown wrote: > Well the California shows were some of the best I've ever seen, (even that > show at the Unitarian Church in Paramus New Jersey got topped by McCabes). > They were on fire at McCabes, Jessica always calls me the morning after a McCabe's show to tell me how awesome it was. It has the feel of a Bad Habits gig without the smoke... I also concur that Nicole should trade away her future prospects (and a player to be named later) for the make the McPilgrimage to McCabe's on EFO's next swing west... Anyone know of EFO's gig plans over the holidays--any Y2EFOK planned?
