Its always great to see the band get back here where we locals can see them again. I'm beginning to understand all of you outside the NOVA area who only get to see them a few times a year. We were really spoiled by those Bad Habits gigs. There were lots of band friends and family there and plenty of old Bad Habiters and you Joe Murphy fans will be glad to know he made it to both nights. There was quite a stir on Saturday night at the beginning of Farmer Brown when everyone was looking for Joe. He just ducks down and slinks around until his big moment and then magically appears right at the front of the stage! Anyway, both shows were a blast although I would have to say that Mike's jokes were right on on Friday. I hesitate to tell them here, but if Mike's wearing a grey shirt with a yellow stripe you're in for a good laugh. Not to say he wasn't full of zeal on Saturday night as evidenced by the Mary Washington "tail". The sets were the same except for the final encores, and the Train Song interlude. Friday night was a reprise of the Jack-o-lantern song and Saturday night it was the theme song of an old DC area Tae Kwon Do (sp?) School interspersed with that 70's favorite "Kung-Fu Fighting". Eddie's Concubine is so fast live its unbelievable! They had great crowd participation on this one, too. And you must get to VA to see them play Old Dominion here. Its awesome. Lots of clapping and screaming throughout. Everyone still does the choreography at the beginning at the "babe the Rocky Mountains, are gradually eroding" part. They also had a raffle for a sick cousin of Robbie's. It was nice and the band and the crowd seemed very supportive. And Mike added everything but the kitchen sink into the raffle. Eddie did not have a new drum set, though. He did have a regular "sit-down" drum kit for a few songs like Farmer Brown, Good At That, Hojo's, Rolling Pin, Loitering, Concubine, and Observation. The kit does lend itself better to some songs. Rolling Pin Sounds really funky and I liked Observation, except that I did miss the triangle at the end like he has on his hand percussion set. He did have the djembe, of course, and he played his solo on it. The sit down kit in addition to the regular set makes up the "Drumpire", but I don't think that will make it all around the country. Its really big and I would guess that without a drum tech it would be a lot of work to take it all over. He's played that sit-down set the last few times I've seen them locally especially since the Fishbowl release and its the same kit he plays with the Jellyfish Blues Band. On Friday night Robbie broke a string during Irish dream and covered masterfully at the end where he usually has a complex picking series.\ he and Eddie sort of made eye-contact and smoothly ended the piece. Unless you had heard the song a million times, you never would have known. It was awesome. I think highlights for me included Julie's new song Great Day, seeing From Dacca and hearing Mike's story about it, and also hearing Atlantic. Mike brought out an old guitar to play Atlantic. He called it "Old Brownie". I think it was a Takamine but it was smaller than his other one and I think this one was auditorium sized and made from Rosewood that made his fingerpicking sound very sweet and mellow. That's all for now. Here's the setlists: Stupid American Woman of Faith 5th of July From Dacca 20,000 Hearts Revolution 3 Fine Daughters Good At That HoJo's At Waukegan Rolling Pin Loitering in the Lobby Great Day djembe Solo Irish Dream Maylee, I Had A Dream Gravity Life Goes on Without You (the Jill Sobule song from Julie's solo cd) Bleecker to Broadway Train Song Not Enough in the World Observation Rowboat to Rio One Eddie's Concubine Old Dominion Atlantic Operator Friday: Not Fade Away->Cleo and Tony Saturday: Bookends See you at the shows, Andy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Oct 1999 16:22:50 +0600 From: Jack Mitchell Subject: Re: Birchmere weekend At 04:15 PM 10/18/99 -0400, you wrote: >I think highlights for me included Julie's new song Great Day, seeing From >Dacca and hearing Mike's story about it, For those of us that weren't fortunate enough to be there, could you relate the story for us??
