Since a few of you requested it & there are some questions answered which were posed on the list before, I thought to send it to all instead of just the few who asked for the review. Thursday, September 30, 1999 saw EFO's triumphant return to Birmingham, AL. The concert was at a wonderful place called Zydeco's. The crowd was enthusiastically participatory in the show. That made for a better performance on the part of the band as they got fired up from our energy. Mostly the songs were from the new CD, but there were tunes from all the previous albums. Even songs from the solo albums made it into the set list (see below). A notable highlight of the show is the brand - new, unrecorded, Julie Murphy Wells penned gospel number, Great Day. She wrote it for a harmony workshop (at Falcon Ridge?). Edheads, it will knock your socks off! This is a great showpiece for the band. Other highlights were Eddie's new drumset being featured on several songs. This gave them a different flavor and showed off The Namesake's talent even more. Also, Soundman Extraordinaire Bob Nichols took pictures with his new digital camera. These should be up on the website soon. Finally, Stupid American's last note was held in perfect harmony for quite a while; several seconds at least. JulieMikeEddieandRobbie said that it was record. The longest distance traveled award has to go to Jamie. She traveled all the way from Boston just to see the show. Jamie, it was really great meeting you there and learning some of the differences between Boston & Birmingham concerts. One is that we have chairs, Yankees don't. Another is that we get into the shows, Yankees don't. Anyway, Jamie is a great person to meet and I hope I have the privilege of seeing her at another concert soon. Other old friends I saw were Mr. & Mrs. C. Wells. They always show support for the band and that night was no exception. They even helped EFO pack up and load Harvey. Mr. Wells is the guy, I believe, who took the photo of the cow for Fishbowl. He is the guy who does a lot of their graphics work or something like that. Whatever the contribution, Mr. & Mrs. Wells, great to see you again. Should I mention that there were many EFO virgins deflowered that night? One of them was my old college friend Mike Miller. We hadn't seen each other since graduation (quite a while, folks, quite a while). Anyway, the point is that Mike, his girlfriend, and many others were converted to Edheads and even bought CDs! What follows is the set list from Thursday: Fifth of July Woman of Faith Jack Can't Cook Old Dominion 20, 000 Hearts 30 Second Love Affair Fly South The Three Fine Daughters of Farmer Brown Bookends (I Don't Think I Know Me was listed here, but was cut - a shame as it is one of my top 5 favorites & would have made the chronology of songs by album complete…I guess we were too into the show & something had to be cut.) Eddie's Concubine Great Day (Here the band took a short break) This My Town Gravity Good At That Bleecker To Broadway Eddie's Djembe Drum Solo Intro to: Irish Dream Maylee, I Had A Dream Stupid American Loitering In The Lobby HoJo's On Waukegan The Train Song Operator (Here Endeth the Concert, but for the Encore they did:) Atlantic The Bridge There are so many songs I could comment on, but I won't as this is getting lengthy enough. I will say that Loitering In The Lobby is incredible Live. Also, EFO's wonderful sense of humor was in full force for all the introductions, choreography, and plugs for Swank (Merchandise). Folks, it never ceases to amaze me that I am the only one who boardtapes EFO in Birmingham. This time the tape came out perfect & a Very Special Thank You to Soundman Bob! (Before you go asking for copies of the boardtape - wait. I have to dub a copy off to EFO & Co. first. Then, I have to see what deals I can cut to have it transferred from HiFi VHS tape to CD. The whole thing clocks in at over 2 hours). After the show, the band came over to the Merch table & signed autographs. I had a chance to talk to them. We talked about a number of things & I asked a question or two that the list discussed/debated in the past. You will be interested to know that there are still spots on the EFO Cruise. Furthermore, it will definitely Rock! Everyone involved with EFO is so very pumped up about it that it can only be great. Imagine Me: Is it about an harmonica or is it a great love song or what? Author of the song, Robbie Schaefer's reply, "Ha ha ha, … It is not about a harmonica, but it is about music." There you have the official answer. Still, I choose to hear it as a beautiful love song even if it isn't one. Mike told me that Floyd was survived without damage to any EFO gear or supplies. In fact, he was amazed at its impact. Having lived in VA all his life, that was the first time he had ever seen the schools close for "anticipated rain". Do I remember correctly that a concert was cancelled because of Hurricane Floyd? If so, I think Mike said they might try to reschedule that date. I asked how the band rehearses and works up new tunes, like Great Day. The reply was, "This is it," while pointing to the stage. The songs are so worked up, so well rehearsed, so familiar, that they do not need to rehearse. This is good since it leaves them more time to work on new songs or other EFO business. As for working up new songs, Great Day is the newest song since LOTF. They do work up the new song's harmonies first (usually on tour in Harvey when they are traveling). Then (also in Harvey) they will work up the instrumentation. Nothing goes out until all are agreed that it is the way it should be. Furthermore, they pretty much know after almost 10 years what works and what sounds best and so on. The next time I saw EFO it was a different month. Friday, October 1, 1999 was the glorious debut of the band in Mobile, AL. Eddie From Ohio was the Opening Act for BayFest, Mobile's three-day outdoor music festival. After claiming the title of THE Mobile Fan for 3+ years, I must now give it up. With few exceptions, the audience was packed with virgins. Although the crowd was small due to the early hour of performance, it grew with time to about as many as Zydeco's. It was hard to tell since the space is less confining at BayFest than at Zydeco's. Everyone who heard them was suitably impressed, as I knew they always would be. There were many requests to bring them back. If you are a Mobilian and reading this, call Monsoon's or Southside and tell them to book EFO. They'll listen b/c they should remember the name (after all, I have been talking them up down there for 3+ years). Also, call Cat Sirtain and Leigh Ann at Mix 99.9 and ask them to play EFO on the air. Cat was there for most of the set and liked them. The set was only an hour long and with the exception of The Train Song and Jack Can't Cook, it was all from the new album. Pretty much it followed the set list from the night before. Sorry, for lack of proper adapters, I couldn't board tape this long-awaited show. This must be said of their set: Just like at CityStages, No one Ever gets an Encore! EFO did! Just like at CityStages, EFO performed the one song guaranteed to get everyone on their feet, Anthem. They really wowed the crowd of all ages. Pretty much what was said for Birmingham the night before goes doubly for Mobile's concert. Congratulations to Eddie From Ohio for breaking the LA Market with such rousing success. (For you foreigners out there, LA = Lower Alabama). So, Nicole, our dear Wonder Nerd, I am now tied with you on the number of EFO concerts attended this year. Edheads, I hope this gives you some answers you wanted & some idea of what you have to look forward to seeing at an upcoming concert. I am just glad I could be a small part of it all.
