Thornhill is closest to Wood, as far as moxy fruvous goes. Wood happens to be my favorite of their studio albums, but a fair number of "Bargainville people" don't like Wood nearly as much. I recommend, if you don't already have it, "Live Noise". You'd probably like that a lot more than Thornhill, if Bargainville and Moon are your current favorites. Live Noise is actually my favorite fruvous album too - they're very different on stage than in studio, and I much prefer their on stage sound, tempo, and banter. > And of course the other part is does anyone have any suggestions of > other groups or CDs I might try. The Nields. Start with Bob on the Ceiling, or 'mousse if you can find them. Both of those you can usually only get direct, though. -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@polyamory.org http://www.leftbank.com/CosWeb/ -- WBRS (100.1 FM) -- info@wbrs.org http://www.wbrs.org/ "We're a bunch of geeks, and so is our audience. Just wanted to say a few things here. First off, i too bought "The Fragile" and was suprised by how mellow it is, well...as mellow as Nine inch Nails can get. Tha abundance of acoustic guitars in the back ground really suprised and pleased me. But the cool thins is that i bought it at a midnight sale (the new Ben Harper came out to. By that!!!!!!!! Ben Harper is a god!!!) but i digress, when i got "Fragile" i opened it up and i had both of the cd's, plus an extra copy of disc one. Just thought i'd share that, thought it was kinda cool. Anyways, in Bryan's e-mail he mentioned Vertical Horizon and specificly running on Ice (btw, i agree, Everything you Want is studio, over produced, commercial crap). What he didn't mention is my favorite cd i own and that's VH's first cd There and Back Again. It's almost exclusivly acoustic and the lyrics are incredible. I wholly support it's purchase. Ok, i'm done now! Tres ===== Tres Watson "I love you, but i'm afraid to love you"- Jeff Buckley "When will i see, Love is just my Fantasy Disguised?"- Keith Kane We met as two total strangers. Thank you for the correction Tres, yeah, I definately like There and Back Again much, much better. And you also picked up on the focus of the music topic, acoustic guitar. Thank you. :) I'm getting a lot of great suggestions here, thank you to everyone and I hope to see them continue rolling in. (Ahhhh, an excuse to mention Fruvous, my *other* musical obsession. :) If you didn't like Wood (give it another chance; it took Wood *months* to grow on me), you probably won't like Thornhill. If you like the slower songs on B'ville or YWGTTM (Fell In Love, Lee, etc.) then you'll likely warm up to Wood eventually. Based on what you've told me, I'd get Live Noise, their live album. > other people think of it. And of course the other part is does anyone > have any suggestions of other groups or CDs I might try. I guess I've never heard of Vertical Horizon, so instead I'll toss out some other groups I like, in no order: The Paperboys (double-billed with EFO out here in CA last winter, and the upcoming Seattle shows look like EFO/Paperboys double-bills as well [1]). I've heard them described as "a Celtic band that got marooned in the Carribean", which dos come close to describing their merry mix of cultures. Pick up _Molinos_, their latest. Spirit of the West. Really good Celtic rock, although they've since mutated into a punk band, so stay away from their later stuff. Get _Labour Day_. Great Big Sea. By and large, their covers are better than their originals (IMHO), but still very cool, energetic Celtic folk. Long live maritime folk! _Rant & Roar_ is all you'll find in the US, but if you have money to burn, get _Play_ imported from Canada. Captain Tractor. Five psychotic Albertans, who sound like nothing so much as a cross between Great Big Sea and the Arrogant Worms (both of whom they cover.) Nab _Hat Trick_ if it crosses your path. Gaelic Storm. A dang fine Celtic band (what is it with all these Celtic bands?) from--of all places--Santa Monica. Even if they're a little TOO fond of telling people about their Brush With Fame (they were the steerage band in _Titanic_), I really dig their first (and so far only) cd, which is self-titled. They Might Be Giants. They have *nothing* in common with EFO, but I've had very good success turning TMBG fans into Edheads, and there's more than a couple of us from the TMBG Mailing List on here. Get _Then: The Earlier Years_; their first 3 albums [2] for the price of 2. - --nicole twn [1] This is where I start thinking "road trip". :> [2] TMBG fans will forgive the oversimplification. *** "Everyone's a novelist, and everyone can sing, but no one talks when the TV's on..."--Moxy Fruvous Visit Nicolopolis! http://wwwcsif.cs.ucdavis.edu/~carlsonn nmcarlson@ucdavis.edu ana.ng@tmbg.org nicole@fruhead.com ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V2 #153 *****************************
