I loved their version of "Barrett's Privateers"... it got lots of people singing along. The covers workshop and the gospel workshop were my two favorite workshops of the weekend. > i should mention that one of he other highlights was from > the moxy fruvous set. to close, they did a hilarious > ditty written for the fest about the creeping killer tents > (which indeed did seem to be everywhere). they worked in > the names of as many artsts from the weekend as possible, > and EFO was among them. it was very funny! I didn't quite catch the line, however; something about EFO looking in a rearview mirror and seeing the tents, so maybe they escaped the carnage. (In the song, just about everyone else gets eaten by the tents, including Ani DiFranco.) Somebody asked who had tapes--I honestly don't know. I saw Jason Reiser there (hi, Jason!), and you all know what that means, but I don't know if he got EFO's mainstage set. Chad (hi, Chad!) got the gospel workshop (and he crashed on my blanket to do so, so I demand a copy :) at least, and possibly some other sets too. My story generally parallels everyone else's. (This is the EFO-centric version. I'll probably post a Fruvous-centric review on a.m.m-f once I get my news client working.) Jessica and I flew into Boston on Thursday, got to Falcon Ridge on Friday, and settled in. We had crummy seats for EFO's main set, but it was cool anyhow. I'd never seen the Farmer Brown dance before, and I thought that was pretty cool... I saw Julie's parents getting dinner a little later, both of them decked almost head to toe in EFO garb. :) They stood out even in a crowd wearing plenty of EFO shirts. :) As someone mentioned, the Nields (who did an amazingly good rendition of "Sumer Is Icumen In"; I love that song (I was an early music freak *way* before I was a folk freak), and I hope they commit their version to CD someday.) invited the Kennedys onstage for a rockin' bunch of 60's folk covers, and then invited dang near every band at Falcon Ridge on stage for... um... "Turn, Turn, Turn", I think. At some point they had Robbie, Dave Chalfant of the Nields, and Dave Matheson of Moxy Fruvous on stage--it looked like they were having a Bald Guitarists Convention up there. :) I was impressed by Cry Cry Cry but mostly by Dar Williams' stuff... I'll probably have to pick up a CD at some point. Any suggestions? Saturday dawned bright and early (in fact, it dawned entirely too early, thanks to a guitar-playing goon who demonstrated his vast repertoire ("That was an A. Here comes an E.") until 2:30. I suggest sleeping pills to people camping at folk fests--it makes an enormous difference. I took one Saturday night, slept like a log, and woke up feeling great.) Caught the covers workshop, where EFO did "If I Had A Boat" (saw that one coming a mile away) and "But Anyway" (by Blues Traveler), which I'd never heard live. As someone else mentioned, one of the Mustard's Retreat people joined Mike on harmonica for a kickin' duet that would have made John Popper proud (or envious). Ani DiFranco that night was pretty cool, but unfortunately I was surrounded by a bevy of squealing fans for her entire set. The gospel workshop Sunday morning was terrific. EFO had a cool new song, "Great Day", Mustard's Retreat sang a very nice one (I'm going to have to track down some of their stuff) about families gathering together, and Vanida Gail (what a set of pipes!) sang "It's a Hard Life", with help from Julie and Robbie. And everyone sang "Amazing Grace" at the end... wow. Anyway. The entire weekend was an absolute and utter blast; easily worth the trip. Chuck and Amy and anyone else I didn't see, I'm sorry I didn't get to meet you. :( Hope you had as much fun as me. Thanks to everyone I did meet; it was great! - --nicole twn *** "I want to be a woman like me!"--The Nields Visit Nicolopolis! http://wwwcsif.cs.ucdavis.edu/~carlsonn nmcarlson@ucdavis.edu ana.ng@tmbg.org ncarlson@mail.arc.nasa.gov ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V2 #129 *****************************
