Think it's gotta be the best studio album yet. Had a lot of fun listening to it yesterday after I got it! I'll probably be obsessing over it the next few days (as is my habit with new CDs). Good stuff! Now I'm really wishing they'd come back to Texas again. Heck, "Old Dominion" made me feel all patriotic, and I'm not even from Virginia. Haven't been there yet, either, but I *did* go to DC once. Had to laugh at "Stupid American", too. So true, so true. Oh yeah, this one's good. We like. Much. :) - -- Buddy Brannan Internet America Customer Care Technician Email: davros@airmail.net The 1-800-Be-A-Geek people :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 08 Jun 1999 15:51:30 -0400 From: "Andrew Bray" Subject: Fishbowl first listen (song by song) These are my very first impressions of the CD as I listened to it on the night I bought it from Jen at the Herndon Festival. I'll have a more over-all one later and also some intrepretations of some of the more interesting ones. I LOVE this CD! Stupid American There's a neat little intricate percussion thing going on in the background. Julie sounds amazing. She really likes singing this song. Her voice sounds so happy and expressive. Almost like a little musical going on. The electric guitar compliments the vocals nicely. 5th of July The intricacies of Eddie's percussion arrangements really stand out in this studio version. Jon Carroll on the B3 sounds great. Its very subtle and highlights the vocals and other instruments. It sort of provides a layer for the other pieces to build on. I also love the situation that the song describes. Old Dominion This is a very different arrangement of this song. The time seems a little different. All of the guests play a significant role in the sound of this one, especially Bela Fleck. His melody line makes this version unique. I don't think you'll see this one sound like this live, but on the other hand, I don't think a studio version could ever capture the energy of a live performance of this number, especially a live performance in Virginia. From Dacca One of the brand new ones. I like the snaps in the beginning. A Mike tune that sounds a bit like a Robbie tune. I think the slap guitar has something to do with that Mike creates some very nice visuals that add to the feel. The Tom Williams trumpet solo sounds wonderful. It a very muted Miles Davis feel. I hope the lyrics will provide some nice discussion for the list. Woman of Faith Another new percussion arrangement from the early drafts. More cymbal, I think. Again Jon Carroll's B3 punctuates the vocals perfectly. Good At That This one has been one of my favorites for a long time. I think most everyone can identify with the protagonist in this one. So far the arrangement sounds very similar to what they have been playing. Oh wait, for the bridge part Eddie moves to the kit and Julie's voice has a very cool echo put on it that sounds almost scream like. Awesome arrangement. I'm loving it! Another winner re-invented to be even better. I have a whole bunch of comments and interpretation of this one for later posting. Minnesota 1945 Dobro! Are you kidding me! another great choice. Like I had discussed with Robbie this song has a very cold and blue feel to it and the Dobro is the perfect match. Exceptional song writing. So slice of life and seemingly so random, yet with Robbie's gift for creating a scene Minnesota 1945 is Virginia 1999. With the snow raging outside eddies drum at the end is almost like a heartbeat. Irish Dream I love the slower time signature to start this one. You can hear every note of Robbie's opening riff. The slower time also allows Julie to really sell the lyrics which she does to perfection. You really hear every word and get a great visual from them. The return of the faster time for the chorus almost acts as a faux crescendo each time. Julie sound like she's right off the boat from Dublin in some parts. the steps sound cool too. "Manly? Yes, but I like it, too!" Eddie's Concubine I'd heard this one a few times at the Birchmere. Julie seems to be having a blast singing it. A classic Clem, witty and hilarious, and Eddie! Eddie! Eddie! master of the ska beat. Mike's and Robbie's playing is great too. Robbie with the classic ska riff and Mike plays an ominous baseline. Would have loved to have had this one back at Bad Habits! Loitering in the Lobby Kind of like efo's own "Schoolhouse Rocks" (Preposition!). i love all of the double entendre in this one, too. juliemikeeddie&robbie! Bleecker to Broadway Here's on that I thought was going to make the Big Noise CD. This is a nice arrangement with a beautiful fade in at the beginning and fade out at the end. 20,000 Hearts Another of my all-time favorite efo songs. I've only heard the full band version once before. The first verse is still just Robbie and his guitar. I love how Julie's voice layers with Robbie's during the dialog parts of Robbie's sister. this will bring a tear to your eye. Maylee, I Had a Dream Here's one in the humor vein usually occupied by Mike, but alas its a Robbie!I love the yelling parts and also the "50 Ways..." lines. Bonny Brook Another of the unheard-of songs. Nice little blue-grassy like intro with the fiddle and accordion. Nice back and forth. Robbie singing the first verse, Julie the second and together the third. Very catchy melody and chorus. Atlantic This last track is another completely new one. Sort of a Trans-Atlantic love story. Mike's smart lyrics fuel this tale and he is as serious in this one as he is funny in some of his other songs. I was so into listening to this one that I almost forgot to write anything. See y'all at the shows, Andy ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V2 #102 *****************************
