Jon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Dec 1998 14:34:19 -0500 From: "Andrew Bray" Subject: Bad Habits grand finale (sorry if you guys get this mutiple times. I've tried to send it a few times and I'm getting nothing back from the list. You would have received it last week. - A) OK folks. Here are my comments on the grand finale at Bad Habits: First of all, the key was to get there EARLY, there were people waiting at 2:30 to get in and get a table. It was worth the wait. The band had some great programs printed up that sort of summed up the experience at Bad Habits since '91 and also had a great trivia quiz for edheads. I guess by show time there was huge line outside, it "ran down the neighborhood block" so efo ran a speaker outside so people in line could hear. First of all there should be plenty of recorded evidence of all of the debauchery. There were 19 tapers! It looked like all of the sound equipment was doubled. There were hundreds of cameras, and at least one video taper. You knew it was going to be a good night when one of the bartenders put a cooler of beer actually on the stage just before showtime. Julie was all gussied up and Mike had on his Christmas tie and red suspenders. So as the band is making its way on stage the crowd was already yelling and screaming which was really cool. Then, after the intro, another long applause through the first verse of Payday in the Village and of course as Julie sang "its Tuesday on the 15th" the place went nuts. Eight miles high was a great surprise. I had never heard them play it and they said it was the first song they played at Bad Habits. As they progressed through the early part of the set, there was applause at the end and the beginning of every song. (I love it when everyone screams at the beginning of songs!) When they got to the Merle Haggerd song (the audience voted for Merle over a Jimmy Buffet tune ) Mike says there are Parrotheads and other kinds of alcoholics in reference to the Merle Haggard bourbon drinkers. Just before Three Fine Daughters, Mike announced that Joe could not attend the final show, due to a funeral in Jersey. The band did this really cool card that said "Tuesdays without Joe is like..." and everyone had to come up with something and sign it in the card. As a tribute everyone did the Joe, and I know many people in the front took pix of the crowd. For those non- Bad Habiters, when the break comes, the only person who does the Joe is JOE. Its kind of like an unwritten rule, so it was nice that everyone took a page from his book for the final BH show. Julie's mouth trumpet solo was great during Charlie Brown and the crowd was joining in for the "Why's everybody always pickin' on me" parts. During the little break in Rowboat to Rio they sang Rowboat to Rio over and over to the tune of O Come All Ye Faithful. It sounded like the Vienna boys choir. Very cool and funny. Eddie's djembe solo was money once again and of course different from all of the others I have ever heard and then Eddie and Robbie were trading licks back and forth at the beginning of Fuse and it was great. They both were off stage and right next to my table doing their thing so I had a pretty good view. Julie also broke out the Ethyl Merman/Carole Channing voices for Blue Jeans. Classic Bad Habits second set stuff. Don't think we'll hear that again anytime soon. People were going nuts for The Old Dominion even before the first note. Mike mentioned that one of the edheads had recently had a baby and wasn't in attendance, but that the baby was born into the commonwealth of Virginia and that's when everyone went crazy and stayed that way throughout the whole song, just singing and yelling and woo-hoo-ing at all of the right times. The Fishbone song Change was cool because eddie took lead vocals and sounded great! He's like the stealth member of the group. Whenever you need a sneak attack, just use the eddie vocals to ignite the crowd. Mike talked about the least requested song ever at Bad Habits and Robbie apologized for what they were about to do just before they broke into Teddy Bear and in classic Mike form, the words were mutated a bit. After Teddy Bear, there was a Conga line around BH during Shake Senora, lead by Bruni on of the waitresses that worked the first night they were there. Blood and Fire was great. It was the first time I had ever seen Julie play guitar and she said she hadn't played in like six years. She sounded great though. Mike joked that without them Julie could have been the next Jewel. I don't see what makes Jewel so special. I think Juile is at least as good as, actually better than Jewel. I guess its who know or something. Then a classic Over the Hills and far Away/Goin to California. This was the full-fledged version with Robbie and Eddie and Mike all contributing to the magic. A couple more covers, Lifeguard Stand (with an early whistle by Robbie that cracked everyone up), Schoolhouse Rocks (a noun is any place that you may go "Like Bad Habits on Tuesdays!), then Train song as the closer. Train song had a bunch of songs in the middle, most of all that they did (Green Acres, Jack O'Lantern, Do, Re Mi - from the Sound of Music, Take Me Home Country Roads, This Train is Bound For Glory, Push It, Jingle Bells, Dreidel Song, If I Had A Hammer, Grandma Got Run Over by A Reindeer, Preposition! (the efo original Schoolhouse Rocks addendum), I'm A Little Teapot). After a standing O and the chant of Eddie! Eddie! Eddie! the band came back on and did Love Me Like A Man and Me and Julio Good Lovin' medley with Buca and bunch of old school Bad Habits staff singing along on stage. It was great. I really thought the whole event was going to be more bittersweet But its not like they're breaking up, it was just a really fun great big party. I mean I'm sure I'll miss all of the Tuesdays, but at least we were lucky to have a great band to see every Tuesday for seven years. I think Robbie had the quote of the night when he said "This is a celebration. Its not just about us. Its about us and you and the club. I don't ever recall anything like this happening anywhere" That sort of made me feel really good and lucky. So to everyone who couldn't make it for the last show and to people who never were able to see a Bad Habits show, get the tapes, they are out there and enjoy. We're lucky to still be able to enjoy the band in many different venues and situations and continue to do so for a long time. Sorry for all of the details I've left out (there are probably many) See you at the shows, Andrew ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Dec 1998 21:01:16 -0500 From: "Geoff Endlich" Subject: RE: mp3 site?
