Paging through today's school newspaper ("The California Aggie, serving UC Davis and Yolo County since 1915" (this should give you some idea just how boring Yolo County is)), I came across this news item, which I am not making up: 'Ohio' Trademark Debate Sparks Coverage Columbus, Ohio-- Because they have the word "Ohio" across them, Ohio State's cheerleader uniforms may have to be changed by 1999 if Ohio University wins a legal battle to trademark its use of the word Ohio. The dispute began when the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office registered the term "Ohio" to OU in May 1995. OSU was notified by OU in December 1995 to terminate its use of the word "Ohio" without the word "State" on athletic uniforms and merchandise. No doubt you all have grasped the implications of this. EFO is exposed as a TRADEMARK INFRINGER! I, personally, have a T-shirt in my closet that contains the word "Ohio" but NOT the word "State". Maybe the band will start selling iron-on transfers or do *something* to bring their name into compliance... Of course, then they'd be "Eddie From Ohio State", which would no doubt irk our favorite college graduates, which would of course necessitate a name change to "Eddie From JMU And Virginia Tech", which is too long to fit on a bumper sticker. Any suggestions? - --nicole the wonder nerd who hereby informs everyone that since ordinary words are now fair game, she intends to copyright "California", "the", and all whitespace. *** "Say you drive a Ford pickup and an anti-Ford pickup towards each other at 20 mph..."--former physics professor, on matter-antimatter annihilation Visit Nicolopolis! http://wwwcsif.cs.ucdavis.edu/~carlsonn ICQ #11984736 Public PGP key at http://wwwcsif.cs.ucdavis.edu/~carlsonn/key.html ncarlson@mail.arc.nasa.gov nmcarlson@ucdavis.edu ana.ng@tmbg.org ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Oct 1998 23:25:31 -0400 From: "Dennis Lovelady" Subject: Re: Edhead: Your government at work OK, Nicole: >Hi-ho, everyone! > >'Ohio' Trademark Debate Sparks Coverage > > No doubt you all have grasped the implications of this. All right, you may have those, but I want "of," "for," all prepositions and most legal terms, particularly "whereas" and "forthwith."
