Tichenor) Subject: hi everyone Hi everyone!!! This is my first message to y'all. I go to Emory University and have a campus radio show on wednesdays from noon-2. You can listen to it over the internet if you have RealPlayer (and if you don't have RealPlayer, you can download it easily from real.com). Anyways, all you have to do is open realplayer, then open location, and type in pnm://rav.cc.emory.edu/WMRE/wmre.rm The show broadcasts live so please tune in. I'll definitely play some EFO. Last night I saw Pat McGee perform at Auburn. If y'all remember, Pat McGee performed with EOF at Wolf Trap this summer and Eddie and Michael play the music on his first CD. Just thought I'd et you know that the VA bands are alive and kicking in the South. One more thing...Carolyn mentioned that she has tapes. I don't have any tapes as of yet, but I would love to start. Theme 1: Spring Gulch Folk Fest - Did anyone get to the Spring Gulch Folk Festival this weekend? Both Grey Eye Glances and EFO played practically in my backyard and I couldn't make it to either show. :( I was wondering if anyone saw either show, and if so what were their impressions. And did anyone tape either of these shows? Theme 2: MP3's - Came home from the disappointment of not seeing either of two of my favorite bands to a message that Seth had created an EFO MP3 server. Thank you so much, Seth. Some of you may know that I've had thoughts of this for quite a while and I am glad that someone finally made this dream a reality. Along those lines, with the McCabe's tape that CB so kindly provided so many of us with, I had made WAV's of two of the songs last week just before I left, and got them encoded today when I returned. Definitely not as HQ as the ones that Seth has encoded ( I'm an expert at ripping CD's and turning them into MP3's but recording from tape and then compressing was a bit of an effort. ) they are a definite start. At http://www.cse.psu.edu/~bthompso , you can download "Minnesota 1945" and two encodings of "Irish Blessing" all from the 8/21/98 McCabe's show that Carolyn Bragg provided me with ( thank you again :) ). "Minnesota 1945" has some noise artifacts that I cannot figure where they came from. The WAV is clean, but the MP3 has extra noises in the very high frequencies. I can't figure out why it happened with that one and neither of the others though. ( I use Frauhenhaufer's MPEG Layer-3 Producer, which I've found to be the best one out there for encoding, but the noise I got on this track sounds like the noise from encoders that hack at the 16 range. On this subject, does anyone know what the numbers for Tape quality is? 96 maybe? - No point in encoding at a higher rate than the original sound is. ) The two versions of "Irish Blessing" are for the musical purists out there. The "cleaned" version I worked on to get the tape hiss out of ( due to the high volume needed to hear the voices that aren't amplified for the song ), the hiss is gone, but the vocals sound a little boxed in. The plain version is exactly how you hear it on the tape and with a bunch of tape noise. I plan on making at least one more ( "Old Dominion" ), so that those who don't tape trade can get copies of the Unreleased Songs, but if any of you haven't gotten the McCabe's Tape and want to hear something else from the setlist, let me know and I'll work on encoding it. If you have the tape and just want a copy of the song on your computer, once again let me know and I'll do my best to help you out. And if anyone else has a song that is unreleased, or a really neat version of a released song, drop me a line and maybe we can set something up for me to get a copy of the show/song. ( Read: I only have this one show, so chances are I cannot help you out with your collection ( unless by some odd chance you don't have this ), but if you want to help me out I'd love it. =) ). Theme 3: Web Page in General - Sorry to everyone who checks my web page for all the laxness in updating and everything. I'm really trying hard to keep up to speed with things. Thank you to everyone who has written me and offered to help me with my tape collection. I had big intentions of following up on everything this summer, but many many things fell apart and I didn't get everything picked up until I got back up to school. And by then I too short of time to write back to all of you. Thank you for your mailings though, and if any of you would like to hear from me, please drop me a line. That also goes for anyone who has any news items on the band, please pass them on to me so that I can get them out on the web. I think that is all. Thank you for your time and please feel free to check out the MP3's at http://www.cse.psu.edu/~bthompso . Thank you to Seth for such an excellent way to spread the music. Thank you Carolyn Bragg for all your help in getting the music out to admirer's of the band. And thank you EFO for all the great tunes. I cannot wait to hear more. Folkin' it Up, Bryan - -- Eddie from Ohio http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/b/e/bet117/EFO/EFOmain.htm ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Oct 1998 20:56:13 -0700 From: Jeff Angwin Subject: Edheads - FTP site and CD's I too am really grateful to Seth for setting up the ftp site, and for showing me the ropes in encoding WAV's to MP3's. You can hear my efforts by downloading the Henflings, Ben Lomand show from the site! (also, thanks again to CB for making that recording possible) CB also sent me the McCabes tape. I just wanted you all to know that I plan on committing it to CD, and in the process will be making and uploading MP3's to the ftp site (if no one else beats me to it, that is :-) ) I'm a bit backlogged on CD requests for the Ben Lomand show right now... but I am willing to cut CD's of that show for anyone who wants it. All I ask is for B&P: The 2 CD's should be about $10.00, or you can send me 2 CD-R disks and a Post Paid return mailer. Remember too, that you can download it yourself and save the hassle. Likewise for the 7/21/98 Bad Habits show from Seth. I downloaded the MP3's and cut the CD's from his MP3's Again, 2 CD's - $10.00 or 2 blank CD-R's and a postpaid mailer. All the best... - ---Jeff--- ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V1 #61 ****************************
