(long) Hi 'vryone So I drove up to Berkeley last night with a largish party in tow (including two complete virgins, both of whom had a blast and loved the band :) and managed to find the Freight and Salvage easily. Practice, I guess, since last time I got semi-lost and the time before that I got hopelessly lost. But anyway. We got there early--1/2 hour before doors--and were rewarded with good seats. There *was* an opener, a singer/songwriter from GA named Shawn Mullins. He was quite good; darker and moodier than I was expecting, and clearly a talented guy. A short break, during which I helped sell merchandise (sales went pretty well, actually, and they hadn't even played yet), and then EFO hit the stage like a ton o'bricks, with another unusual setlist. (It OPENED with the Train Song, for one...) Naturally, I forgot to snag a copy, so this will be from memory. Other highlights included: * An excellent "Oh, My Brother", with a silent ("awestruck", I like to think, but maybe that's just me) audience that made it more dramatic. * "If I Had A Boat". I'm glad I got to hear this live, since I really liked it on the album. There's something so tender and warm about the way Robbie sings it, as if he's singing it to his young sons at bedtime... :) * A new song! Wheee! And it's a good one--an uptempo, drily funny one about being a "stupid American" in Europe. Gonna have to play this one for my mother's family in France when it comes out. * "The Old Dominion", again. I like this song more each time I hear it. * "Imagine Me", which I only vaguely like on Actually Not, is wonderful live. Last night was no exception. * "Bookends", featuring Robbie bouncing around stage (boing!) and knocking Julie's mike loose. * "Very Short Fuse" had Julie trying out a drum riff on Eddie's snare (?) drum. (Eddie: "That was pretty good, Julie!") * "Walking in Jerusalem" had Robbie singing "Sunrise, Sunset" and Mike attempt "Hava Nagila" (at least, I assume that's what it was). YOU try to sing "Sunrise, Sunset" or "Hava Nagila" while 200 people are clapping to the beat of "Walking in Jerusalem." * Mike came down from stage and danced with his mother in the middle of "I Know You Rider", while playing something silly-sounding on the harmonica. (Anyone recognize the tune?) * A butt-kicking, majorly rawking "Know You Rider" jam as the grand finale (Mike: "You'll be sick of us by the time this is through." As if, Mike. ;) * Encore included "3 Fine Daughters..." The a capella break is such a magical moment. So, all in all, a most excellent show, and I enjoyed the feeling of being actually involved in it. Sound was really good, too, if a bit loud, but I was sitting under the speaker and thus have only myself to blame. Hello and *hug* to everyone I saw there! They say they're coming back in February. Six looooong months. I'll never make it. :) - --nicole the wonder nerd ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Aug 1998 13:48:36 -0700 (PDT) From: Robert Wade Subject: Re: Edhead: Berkeley show review! (long) I have to agree that last night's show was incredible. I moved out from Virginia about one year ago and never even thought that I would get to see EFO again. Seeing last night's performance made me actually miss Virginia! I was dissappointed, however, that JMU got two plugs -- one from Robbie, one from Mike -- and Julie didn't give so much as a mention of Virginia Tech (GO HOKIES!). == "Uh...huh huh huh..." - Butthead Robert W. Guess I'll post an intro, as I don't have anything else of any substance to post. My name's Buddy, and I live in Dallas, TX--used to live in Austin. I live here with my girlfriend, Melanie, my guide dog Karl (he's a Golden Retriever), and our four cats, Zoe and Samantha (originally mine--Samantha's fairly new as of February), and Beau and B.J. (who were Melanie's, and she says that his name's Bo, but I disagree). So, my connection to EFO. Well, it's a good story, if nothing else. In the early part of 1994, I was walking out of a class, across campus to catch a bus. BTW, this was pre-Karl. Anyhow, I hear very faintly some music playing on one of the malls on the UT campus--you know, just a big open space with buildings around it, and plants, and a couple fountains, and that kinda thing. This is not uncommon, but I was interested and wanted to see who these musicians were, so I started heading that direction. So here I come up to a bunch of people playing, listen to their song, say hello, introduce myself, and ask all the really stupid questions that people ask when they've never seen EFO before, like, "OK, so who are you? And are you from Ohio?" So I stood around and listened a while longer. They said they were playing that night and their CD was available at the Tower Records not far from there. I unfortunately wouldn't be able to make the concert, as I lived a long bus ride away and there'd be no way I'd be able to get home afterwards. I asked if they'd be there a while, and they said they would, but to save me the walk (and no one else was standing around listening--cretins), I snagged a copy of "Actually Not" right there. I told them I'd order the rest in due course, the rest being "Juggler" at that time, talked a while longer, listened to them until they left, and went home. Or to study. I forget. OK, that was four years ago, and during that time, "Actually Not" has been a favorite in my CD collection and has enjoyed heavy rotation. Just around April, I heard about "Portable" coming out and thought,"You know, I've been meaning to order these, and I can actually afford to now," so I put in an order for the other four disks missing from my collection. And now they *all* enjoy heavy rotation, since I don't think they're coming back to Texas again any time soon, and I missed my chance that other time. So here I am, thinking that I might just put "Portable" into my CD-ROM drive. I shall enjoy all those groovy EFO concerts vicariously through the rest of you. *Gryn* Buddy ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V1 #39 ****************************
