Joan (my converted Edhead girlfriend) and I too was there... got there a bit late, for the trip up Highway 9 - while a blast - is somewhat arduous, And so, by the time we got there, the 2 rows of seats up front were taken (as was most of the yummy dinner special!), and we got to sit back by the bar with the locals who couldn't care less who EFO were. But, we, and the band took it in stride! (although Mike stated that he felt upstaged by the drunks at one point in the show) And what a wonderful show it was too! Got to hear Old Dominion and Minnesota 1945 for the first time. If this is the sound of the new album (due to be recorded in January) All I can say is "WOW" I was duly surprised to hear Lifeguard Stand too. With, I might add, a bit of banter between Mike and the drunks in the back! The closing was Train Song - extended version - and Star Spangled Banner: in a rendition that was truly amazing! I wasn't too impressed with the Portable EFO version, but when I heard it really live, with Julie's beautiful vocals, and Mike and Robbie's harmonies--- Amazing! With the gracious help of CB (the EFO sound person) I was able to plug my tape deck into the sound board, and so there is now a lasting record of the magic. Upon listening to the tape last night, I realized just how much magic there was (as the background bar-noise was quite distracting for us in the back... It did not get picked up in the microphones up front) I'll be transcribing the tape, which is a digital recording, to a couple of CD's in a week or two, so if anyone is interested in trading EFO tapes, I have one very special performance of excellent quality (although, due to inadequacies in the venue supplied sound board, it is a mono recording. I'll see about enhancing it to pseudo stereo when I do the transfer to CD) And as always, the individual members of the band were as friendly and gracious as ever! Joan and I spent a few minutes with each after the show... Even though we see EFO only every 6 months or so, each one remembered us--- Robbie even remembered our first meeting ... In Colorado a year and a half ago!--- They're just great people, as well as fantastic musicians! I'd love to see the band again this Sunday in Berkeley, but alas, other plans preclude that idea. But, if any California Edheads out there can in any way make it to Berkeley and the Freight & Salvage (a Fantastic venue, by the way) by all means GO! And, if there are any tapers out there, Go and Tape! then let me know, and let's trade! All the best... - ---Jeff--- - --------------5F184714CD9A2CFBB7848DAA Content-Type: text/x-vcard; charset=us-ascii; name="jeff.vcf" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Description: Card for Jeff Angwin Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="jeff.vcf" begin:vcard n:Angwin;Jeff tel;work:408 944-7360 x-mozilla-html:TRUE org:Cadence Online Support Tools Group version:2.1 email;internet:jeff@cadence.com title:Member of Consulting Staff adr;quoted-printable;quoted-printable:;;2655 Seely Dr=0D=0A= M/S 8A1;San Jose;CA;95134;USA x-mozilla-cpt:;-11280 fn:Jeff Angwin end:vcard - --------------5F184714CD9A2CFBB7848DAA-- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Aug 1998 10:39:19 -0700 From: Jeff Angwin Subject: Banana Slugs: The whole, complete story This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - --------------AA8661E9D6296056703682D6 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit The subject of Fighting Banana Slugs (The official mascot of the University California at Santa Cruz) came up at the Ben Lomand show.
