There were these two tribes battling for land along the fertile Potomac near Georgetown. There was one tribe from what is now Virginia on the South side of the river and one tribe from the North in what is now Maryland. The MD tribe had beseiged the VA tribe for a while but the VA tribe beat them back. The VA tribe was desperately low on food so a hunting and fishing party set out to get food. Excluded from this party were 3 sons of the chief. The chief said they were too young for this dangerous expedition. The 3 sons hatched a plan to go fishing on the North side of the river to get fish to feed the tribe until the main party returned. The MD tribe had left a scouting party behind and they caught the young braves and scalped them in front of the tribe. The medicine mans three daughters were in love with the braves and secretly made plans to cross the river and marry the braves who had slain their loves. They figured they could lure them to a long and torturous death (perhaps by marriage? ;-) ). Anyway the daughters made a raft out of logs and of course as they crossed the Potomac the raft sank and the girls died. It is said before they died they chanted a curse about no one ever being able to cross the river at this point. The next morning when everyone wakes up the daughters are nowhere to be found, but there are these three little islands where the night before there weren't any islands. These islands are thought to be haunted because of the curse. There have been numerous deaths reported of fisherman, swimmers, and boaters who have tried to cross the river there. In 1972 they tried to build a bridge across the river at Three Sisters island but there was a huge flood and all of the construction materials were washed away so they abandoned the plans. They say that sometimes there is a strange howling and that the howling means there will be a drowning in that spot soon. Creepy, huh? Anyway, I think its possible that our story of old man Brown and his daughters may be linked to this legend. I mean there are some parallels. First, there are three daughters, second, it is referred to as Three Sisters Island, and third, the fightin' and the flirtin and the preachin of Nellie, Dottie, and Becca could be the howling that is heard preceding a drowning. Anyway, maybe Mike just heard the name and made the whole story up See ya at the shows, Andy ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V1 #33 ****************************
