[Colleen Campbell Subject: Well, since ya'll liked the last one. . . I got so many compliments on the little review I wrote for an EFO show last month that I asked to be added to the Edheads list myself. So here I go, 'nother review; hope you enjoy it as much as the last! (And it'll be a bit easier than the last, since I get to cop off of the setlist just posted. Slacker, me!) I can think of a few artists that I'd like to follow on stage even less than Dar Williams--but only a few. She shone, appropriately enough, at Solarfest (this past weekend in rural Vermont); and to take the metaphor further, it would take something truly glorious to eclipse her. EFO came as close as humanly possible. The crowd was a little skeptical to start with. The applause was polite and reserved. Very, very few people came down to dance--a stark contrast to the (largely-female) audience bouncing and cheering with abandon right before Dar. Perhaps it was a recovery period, perhaps the audience was exhausted, perhaps they were being loyal to their beloved Dar; for whatever reason, I found myself frolicking in my babydoll batikwear dress almost alone in front of Mike. Good thing I have no shame. EFO's response, though, was to proceed as if they were already getting the enthusiastic response that was their due. Julie was particularly cute in a brand-new green-and-blue "folk-festival" dress. You know one when you see one. (And nowhere but a folk fest is it perfectly appropriate to be wearing the same dress as two of the women in your audience!) They started off with three medium-energy songs, then did a downshift into "Walk in Jerusalem"--a very pretty song but very low key for a hillside of already butter-in-July people oozing and mellowing in the sun. The newish song (which I keep expecting to be "Smoke" when they intro it as a suggestion for Virginia's new state song) was "Old Dominion"--very catchy, countryish, and inspiring enough to drag some people to their feet and down the hill. I was a bit distressed when they stayed there but didn't stay respectful and talked very loudly right in front of the stage. Eddie's antics on the djembe, stellar as always (he looked almost ferocious with concentration!) caught their attention, but they went back to their conversations during "Jerusalem," a beautiful ballad of a song. Even more surprising to me was when the trio of strong, easily-beloved songs (3 Fine Daughters, Bookends, This My Town), while welcomed, didn't inspire the audience to awe, great enthusiasm, or butt-wiggling. Hmph. What *did*, though, was even more of a surprise. Apparently, among a crowd of neo-pagans, sun-worshippers, and feministic dryads, gospel music is paradoxically the way to go. "Operator" finally had the people scrambling to the dance area, some making evangelistic hand movements, most just dancing in delight. I noted the irony that on a Sunday, a crowd was dancing to a religious tune. Blue laws are apparently quite a thing of the past. *smile* The "I Know You Rider/Lovelight" medley got an even greater response, with people kicking up their heels and clapping during the whole song. Robbie played his guitar with Julie's newly acquired shaker veggie, the zucchini, Julie was a dervish all over the stage, and Mike pumped his soul into that harp for us. Then came the real surprise: for an audience that'd been sluggish through the first 4/5ths of the show, they sure were insistent about getting umpteen encores! EFO's flawless a cappella rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner" came first, and EFO clearly thought that was going to be the end. When called out for a second, they treated us to a request, another of my favorites, "The New James Bond," very well-received and with Julie punctuating herself with many the moue throughout. The third encore was obviously a bit of a shock to them, and I was hoping for a quiet little ending, "Blue Jeans" or "Oh My Brother," but instead they wowed the greedy audience with "The Bridge." And it was then that I understood just how few of the crowd knew their work, because in a sea of bodies, I was just about the only dancing and singing along with *that*, what I'd contend is the best-known of their work. Anyway, I'm falling asleep on computer uno; some one can tell you more if they'd like. Hope to see y'all a shows someday! ceecee Colleen Campbell o/~ Fruphoria! o/~ ceecee@fruvous.com "Hope we're not too slick for you. . . We're thinking of taking this show to Vegas. Cee! :D *hug* *hug* Great to see you! Thanks for the review... glad the festival was fun. I know it's early for a roll call, but who's planning on making one or more of the California shows? I'll for sure be at the Berkeley show (me and as many friends as I can haul along) and I'll probably be at the Santa Barbara, LA, and Mammoth Mt. shows, too. Anyone else? - --nicole twn still without USENET access... sigh. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Jul 1998 11:47:43 EDT From: Sjp007@aol.com Subject: Re: Well, since ya'll liked the last one. . .
