I'm finally writing in. It looks like the list is catching on slowly, but surely. Thanks to all those who have contributed. My name is Carolyn Bragg, and I run monitors and part-time front-of-house(FOH) for EFO. I want to clear up the matter concerning Bob and me. Bob has been on tour with EFO for several years now. In April of 1997, he and his wife, Cathy, were expecting their first child. EFO had a Colorado tour planned, but how could Bob go, knowing that his first child may be born during that time? That turned out to be my first experience mixing FOH for EFO. I did pretty well for a monitor engineer once I got the hang of it. I did have a couple of bad nights, but on the whole, I think the audiences and the band were happy. Bob and Cathy had their first daughter, Caroline (no, she was named for Cathy's mom and grandmother), on April 13, 1997, while we were on our way back from the tour. So, we were all thankful (especially Cathy) that he chose to stay at home. After the tour, things went back to normal for a long while. Bob was working a lot, and missing watching his daughter grow up. Another reason is that, while EFO would like to have both of us on the road all of the time, they can usually only afford to have one of us. I was not working as much as I'd like to have, and Bob was working more than he would like to have. The band, Bob, and I decided that it might be a good thing for us to share the FOH duties. I would get some more work, and Bob would have more time at home. So, every other week or so, we switch off. I have done quite a few shows, and they have gone pretty well so far. I am still learning, so for those of you who enjoy Bob's mix, please be patient, I'll get there soon. So, you see, it's not that Bob was getting sick of being on the road, he was just missing out on some of the best times of his life. Those of you who have children understand how much fun it is to watch your child learn new things. It's almost as if you can see some things with new eyes yourself. Yes, he does do some other work. He does the occasional PMB show when it is my week to mix, and PMB needs a monitor engineer. He was at the Flood Zone in Richmond, filling in for the house soundguy, Dusty, who was mixing Sister Hazel at Mayo Island (Richmond, VA). I also work doing other things on my weeks off. I do monitors for PMB at important gigs (Wolftrap, Birchmere, etc.) I also set up PA for other bands. Paul (PMB's FOH soundguy, my partner , and boyfriend) and I ran sound at one of the side stages at the Freedom Fest in DC this past weekend. So we all do sound and we all love it, but Bob and I like the flexibility of our new scheduling. It gives us the freedom to take time off when we need to. So until one of us decides that this arrangement is not working, we will continue to be the tag-team sound crew for Eddie From Ohio. We hope you don't mind, and if you do, well, too bad!! I know this was a long posting, but I hope this clears up a few things for you concerning the crew. Who knows, maybe we'll get our own crew webpage one of these days! If anyone has any questions concerning the technical aspects of shows, please post your questions, and I'll try to answer to the best of my ability. If I don't know the answer, I'll ask Bob. Neither of us knows everything, but we'll do what we can to help out. Hope y'all had a nice fourth of July weekend! cb PS: Jay, I believe "29 Ways" was written by Willie Dixon, but it has been covered so many times by different artists that I don't know for sure. Does anyone else know for sure? _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. I am not on the web at the present time, so I can't check out the website to see if they have a list there. Bray" Subject: more on Jack Can't Cook I apologize if this gets posted twice, I thought I sent it and then it never came back. After reading the post about what JCC is really about I figured I try to give some sort of a possible interpretation. Loosely based the story of Jack Kent Cooke, the late owner of the Washington Redskins, and his trials and tribulations around the DC area. The lyrical transcriptions are prefaced with the >>>. >>>Jack can't cook >>>Jack can't cook >>>Jack can't cook >>>Jack can't cook Sounds a lot like Jack Kent Cooke. >>>You can't judge a story by the cover of a book >>>So don't judge Jack 'cause Jack can't cook >>>Jack Can't Cook >>>So he built himself a diner >>>Where no one in the neighborhood thought it ought to be >>>Packs chant "crook!" >>>So they built themselves a dummy >>>Of hungry old Jack burning up in effigy Around 1987, Jack said the 'skins were losing money so he announced plans to build a new stadium. DC wanted to keep the 'skins and Maryland and Virginia were notedly unoptimistic about moving the team and the new stadium. Everyone said he was greedy and they had all these ridculous protests to block any building of a stadium. >>>Jack hates kids >>>So he married him a granny >>>Who Jack knew wouldn't have the land for his seed >>>But Jack thought wrong >>>and the granny had a baby >>>and the baby looked a lot like Jack indeed A reference to Jack's third wife Suzanne Martin. She later claimed that the marriage was contingent upon her aborting a fetus conceived by Cooke. After the wedding, she decided to have the baby and the marriage was dissolved after 73 days. >>>Jack left home >>>For a younger Venezuealen >>>Who made a lot of showings except in Jack's bed >>>Had old Jack >>>Been Henry the VIII >>>Maybe Ann Boleyn just might have kept her head A reference to Jack's wife Marlena Cooke, who was actually a Bolivian national. She was a noted DC socialite always being spotted at the citiy's most trendy and exclusive clubs. The second part refers to Jack's lenience on his trophy wife. Marlena should have lost her head. >>>Jack can't cook >>>Jack can't cook >>>Jack can't cook >>>Jack can't cook >>>It aint no thing if your plate is full >>>So why not send Jack to culinary school >>>Jack can't count >>>But his son was an accountant >>>Who counted on being named the heir to Jack's throne >>>But he lost out >>>To his younger brother >>>Who couldn't count either had the elder only known Jack's older son, Ralph Kent Cooke, was a businessman and was sent to run Jack's thoroughbred farm in Kentucky. Jack's younger son, John Kent Cooke actually became owner/CEO of the Redskins when Jack died. >>>Jack can't stand >>>the drive to his kitchen >>>so he ordered it moved to his back yard >>>Jack can't stand >>>The noise and the bitchin' >>>(?Cause its real?) ain't life hard Jack finally settled on a place to build the new stadium. A farm in Maryland became a place called Raljohn (after his two sons) and that's where construction of the new stadium began. >>>Jack only has a name for his diner >>>and wouldn't you know it its after himself >>>Jack only has a model for his diner >>>next to the urn on his living room shelf This is actually a very prophetic verse. Jack didn't actually name the stadium before he died or see it complete. The stadium did become Jack Kent Cooke Stadium and Jack only was able to see it complete as a model. Is the urn a place for his ashes? perhaps. >>>Now Honest Abe has a key to the city >>>and hungry old Jack has a lot of self pity This one is kind of interesting. I think it might be a reference to Abe Polin the owner of the basketball Washington Wizards and hockey Washington Capitals. Abe has really been embraced by the city for building the new MCI Center in downtown DC and keeping the teams "local". >>>Jack can't cook >>>Jack can't cook >>>Jack can't cook >>>Jack can't cook >>>You can't judge a story by the cover of a book >>>So don't judge Jack 'cause Jack can't cook This one is really a reach on my part, but when asked what someone would write in a book about him Jack said, "Nobody's going to write a book about me [50 years from now], because nobody's going to find anything worth writing a book about." I guess there is enough for a song though. >>>Jack can't cook >>>Jack can't cook >>>Jack can't cook >>>Jack can't cook Anyway, that's sort of loose interpretation. I'd love to hear any comments on it thatanyone might have, local to DC or otherwise. It really has that classic Clem wittiness to it, just like the new song "The Old Dominion". Andy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Jul 1998 18:58:05 -0400 From: encoreaudio@juno.com Subject: stuff Edheads Anonymous, I am responding to several emails received today. First, thanks to Andy for analyzing Jack Can't Cook for us. I never kept up with news on the old fogey, so wasn't sure what Mike was referring to with his lyrics. I knew they had to have some truth to them, but didn't have any stories to match up with the verses. Nice job! Doug- Front of House (often abbreviated FOH) is the area in front of the stage where the audience stand/sits. If this area is full, it is called a "packed" house. The FOH engineer does a mix for the audience. Hopefully the mixing console is located somewhere IN the "house", so that the engineer has a better idea of what they are doing. It does little good to have the FOH engineer BEHIND the speakers. The monitor engineer DOES stand behind the main speakers. That is because the monitor engineer is doing mixes for the band. Each band member should have their own mix. The monitor engineer makes adjustments as the show goes on so that each band member can hear what they need to hear, while making it sound as natural as possible. Feedback control is also a large part of a monitor engineer's job. This is as equally difficult to do from the FOH position as running FOH from the stage is. Hopefully this answers your question, plus a little more. And last but not least, a little more info on Everything. Scott - get the newest album, "Supernatural." It is, by far, their best, yet. Everything is in the rock vein. It's fun, groovy rock. definitely danceable. The lyrics go from deep to occasionally cheesy, but the music is enough to make you forgive lyrics like, "the warm and fuzzy way." Are you from the DC area? They played at the Freedom Fest on the Fourth. Instrumentation on the album includes drums (Nate ROCKS! something serious), bass, guitar, keys/synths, horns (saxes, trombone, etc.), samples/tape loops, and vocals. There is so much cool stuff going on under the music. Nate did a really nice job with the tape loops. Some of the sounds are strange, but they seem to fit in with the album's sound so smoothly. Everything is a great band. Check out their website and get on their mailing list. I believe the addresses were on the previous post. Enjoy! Thanks to all edheads, CB PS: Has anyone gone down to check out WISH, who are filling in for EFO at Bad Habits? They are also awesome. A bit on the alternative side, but Melissa has a really nice voice. I am going to try and make it next week, and you should, too (unless of course you live in Rhode Island or something). _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
