It is indeed exciting to see a forum started up for the edheads out there. Michael Esterheld here, currently a resident of our nation's capitol while participating in the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps. The NCCC is a long story, but if anyone's interested in doing full-time national and community service for a year or two (and getting some money for college out of or the deal!), then I'll tell more. In terms of further introduction, I've got a couple of years of college behind me, and I'll be heading to New Mexico later this summer and going back to school, this time in Santa Fe. That's plenty of introduction for now. Nicole: I'll have to take a listen to "Bookends" (I haven't yet had my dose for today). I assume you're referring to the studio version on "I Rode Fido Home" and not the live track off the new "Portable efo Show" disc, but it wouldn't surprise me if the case were the same for both. My contention is that the 4th voice you're hearing may very well be Mr. Eddie from Ohio Hartness himself. I don't think it's uncommon for the whole group to be singing independent vocal parts. Just check out any of their a-capalla masterpieces, i.e. "Not Enough Gold in the World" or the a-capella section in "Three Fine Daughters...". But who knows? If they could get Bob and Carolyn to join in, they'd have a full sextet, which might allow them to produce some of the famed choral pieces of the Renaissance period. What do you say, EFO? Sounds like a crossover album in the making to me. Nate: I was at the Wolftrap show last night with a friend from my organization. I have to say, $15 for approximately 4 hours of music is my idea of a great deal. I really dug the Nields, and I thought efo put on a great set. Doing the National Anthem as their encore and then NOT doing another one (even though the crowd was still going wild!) was a very tasteful nod to Independence Day. It was my friend's first time seeing them in concert and she came away excited about the prospect of more efo in the future. I thought things got a little wierd after efo left the stage, and all of a sudden the whole thing was, as my friend put it, "like a college party with a bigger-than-usual stereo system." As things started sliding towards the status of Drunken Orgy, I went into sensory overload and had a hard time really getting into the Pat McGee Band, though I had a good time jamming along with that saxaphone player on my kazoo. All in all, though, it was definately a good time. Was anyone else on this email list there? Nate? If so, any good stories? Well, that's all for now. I hope this list gets up and running, so keep the dialogue going and don't hold back! Take care, ev'rybody, and Keep yer' Fins Up! Glad to see a local list has started up (even if the main contributor so far is not local). I've lived in Northern Virginia for about three years but got introduced to EFO long before that by my sister who lives in the area. I've seen them several times at their Tuesday gig, but have yet to stay for the second set (it runs too late, and I have a job, dammit). So I hear the band will only be doing the Tuesday deal until December. Too bad, because I think they are at their best there, most relaxed and willing to play anything. But I'm glad to hear they are doing a lot of touring and are becomming more popular. They deserve it. The National Anthem a cappella style was started almost exactly a year ago when the band decided it would be fun to be chosen to do the opening anthem at an O's game, I believe. I heard Julie's father talking about it at last year's Freedom Fest on July 4th in DC. They didn't get chosen, I believe, but they've made the anthem a regular part of their set. They did it at the freedom fest last year. I'm going to the fest again tomorrow, but don't know if they're playing again. As for my EFO story, I actually wrote one. I used to work for a community newspaper covering the town of Vienna where Julie lived for a time and went to school (and where her parents still live). She makes for a great interview, by the way, and I learned some interesting things about her upbringing. If anyone's interested, I'll transcribe the story someday and send it out on the list. But I did get to see her solo show at Wolftrap free (about 2 years ago) when she did some show tunes and various other songs she liked. It was pretty incredible. I also got her to sign one of my albums with a "Go Vienna Times" note. Ok, so getting an autograph may not be a big deal, but I'm proud of it. So anyway, I hope people continue to post and keep this list active. Tell me more about the Wolftrap show with Pat McGee. Did any of the EFO gang play with McGee? I know some (if not all) played on his band's album. I wish I could have gone. jeff ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V1 #7 ***************************
